Western grasshoppers and Chinese ants
By Spengler
Sep 5, 2007
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Global_Economy/II05Dj01.html

A major theme is missing from the central bankers' annual retreat at
Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Everyone is talking about collapse of the US
home-price bubble and the danger of recession, but no one is talking
about the suckers who financed the bubble, namely the savers of Asia.

Asia will do so no longer. If the United States wants Asian investors
to continue to take risk on its shores, it will have to allow them to
buy solid US companies, rather than the sort of debt derivatives that
blew up this summer.

One exceptional fact accounts for the instability in financial markets
during recent weeks: the Chinese and many other Asians save about half
their income, while Americans save none of their income at all.
Foreigners, mainly Asians, invest US$1 trillion a year in the United
States, because their home economies cannot absorb so much investment,
or because the political risk attached to local investments is too
great.

In the present iteration of Aesop's fable, American consumers are the
grasshoppers and Chinese (and other Asian) savers are the ants. The
trouble is that Asians have put their savings into the balance sheet
of US consumers.

Outside the US, it seems incomprehensible that the average family
would save nothing for retirement or against a rainy day. But God
takes care of drunks, small children and the United States of America.
In other words, the typical American family expected the value of its
house to keep appreciating at nearly 10% a year indefinitely,
eventually turning into a retirement fund. US home prices appreciated
by 86% between 1996 and 2006; like the Cargo Cults that proliferated
in New Guinea after World War II, Americans seemed to think that this
would go on forever.

Delusional expectations about home prices justified a trillion dollars
of loans to borrowers with poor credit or inadequate income
("subprime" loans), and that is the proximate cause of the bubble.
World markets have swooned in response to what the media call a credit
crunch - the reluctance of investors to accept the Frankenstein
monsters of financial engineering. In the case of US mortgages of poor
credit quality ("subprime"), derivatives technology sought to make a
silk purse out of a sow's ear, but it is a purse that still goes
"oink" when opened. This has produced consternation across Asia, where
many financial institutions invested heavily in obscure and complex
instruments that cannot be sold today except at a severe loss.

When the world throws money at a national economy, large or small,
credit is easy and stupid investments are made. America's
subprime-mortgage problem uncannily resembles the Asian financial
crisis of 1997. Ten years ago, investors couldn't put enough money
into high-yielding investments in Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea and
so forth, and financed an enormous real-estate bubble. When the bubble
popped in the spring of 1997, Asian stock markets and currencies
crashed. Asians have not forgotten the pious lectures about profligacy
they suffered from the West just 10 years ago.

Many of the economists who offered opinions at Jackson Hole warned
that the bursting of the home-price bubble might lead to a severe
recession. If the rout on financial markets turns into economic
distress, Western governments will have no one but themselves, and
nothing but their own hypocrisy, to blame. After instructing China for
years on the benefits of free markets, Washington, Brussels and other
Western governments have imposed the strictest sort of mercantilist
barriers upon the free movement of capital.

It seems obvious to ask why Asians should have bought exotic debt
instruments, rather than buy brick, mortar and machinery in the United
States and Europe. The answer is that the US and European governments
will not allow them to do so. The specter haunting Western financial
markets is not proletarian revolution, but the sovereign funds of
China, Singapore, the Persian Gulf states and others, ready to invest
hundreds of billions of dollars a year. But the West does not want to
allow Asians to control major companies. The Chinese have told the US
government that they will buy virtually any large US firm that the
government allows them to - but the US government fears the political
fallout.

Of course, one feels sorry for autoworkers in the US state of
Michigan, who earn $30 per hour and expected to do so in perpetuity.
Sadly for them, workers earning a tenth of that amount can assemble
cars just as well. If I were a sovereign investment fund, I would buy
Ford Motor Co, shut down all of its production facilities in the US,
and keep the nameplate as an emerging-markets and European brand. But
that sort of rationalization is precisely what any US government will
try to prevent.

The excuse Washington and Brussels offer for ring-fencing their
companies against Asian investors is that the prospective purchasers
are sovereign funds, that is, agencies of the state, rather than
private individuals. With the poor development of Chinese and other
Asian capital governments, the state becomes the only entity capable
of supporting national savings. Singapore created the model for this
in its admirable pension program. China has no real pension program,
but its more than $1 trillion of foreign-exchange reserves constitutes
the rainy-day savings of the Chinese people. The Chinese authorities
have begun to permit Chinese citizens to buy foreign securities, but
for the moment the savings of the Chinese people are held in large
measure by the government.

Why have Americans tolerated China's penetration of its market for
manufactured goods, at the expense of US manufacturing employment?
Part of the answer, of course, lies in the fact that Americans are
able to buy much cheaper goods. But a more important part of the
answer, perhaps, is that China's reinvestment of its export earnings
in US debt instruments forced down the cost of capital in the United
States, as Federal Reserve Board chairman Benjamin Bernanke has
observed over the years. Cheap capital fueled an asset-price bubble in
the US, generating capital gains for US households that made savings
seem unnecessary.

If, as some of the voices from Jackson Hole predict, US employment
falls as a result, protectionist measures against Chinese exports
become quite probable. Cheap Chinese goods at Wal-Mart and cheap loans
from the banks make a convincing case for free markets only when one
has a job, and a house; if enough people lose their jobs and their
homes, their first instinct will be to blame the Chinese. Democratic
presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has already embraced
protectionism against China, an ominous sign.

China may have to shift economic gears in a hurry, spending more on
its internal market and infrastructure, using if need be some of the
foreign-exchange reserves accumulated during the past several years.
It will have to seek markets outside the United States, especially in
the emerging world. The transition may be painful in the short run for
China, but I do not expect the Chinese economy to collapse even if the
US throws up protectionist barriers against Chinese imports. China
already has moved most of its young people out of the countryside into
the cities, and there are reports of a shortage of young workers in
Chinese cities.

Americans will have to work harder and save more. If the US wants to
remain the magnet for world capital flows it became during the 1990s,
it will have to allow the savers of the world to become partners in
the US economy, that is, to buy into its first-rank companies. This is
not a matter of US discretion; at some point, the United States will
have no choice but to allow more foreign ownership. If Washington
delays the inevitable, the price of US companies will fall, and
Chinese and other sovereign investors will buy them cheaper.

Because they have no real alternative available to them.

Fantasy. They will do so for the same reason they have up till now, they have no alternative.

> If the United States wants Asian investors to continue to take risk

Made no difference when the Japs started to do that for a while.

> rather than the sort of debt derivatives that blew up this summer.

They arent forced to buy those.

> One exceptional fact accounts for the instability in financial markets
> during recent weeks: the Chinese and many other Asians save about

That last is a mindless lie. Those who claim that arent counting house
purchase or the tax favoured savings.

> Foreigners, mainly Asians, invest US$1 trillion a year in the United States,
> because their home economies cannot absorb so much investment,

Thats not the reason. The real reason is the pathetic interest
rate paid in their country, most obviously with the Japs.

> or because the political risk attached to local investments is too great.

Mindlessly silly with china.

> In the present iteration of Aesop's fable, American consumers are
> the grasshoppers and Chinese (and other Asian) savers are the ants.

Typical mindless journalistic crap.

> The trouble is that Asians have put their savings
> into the balance sheet of US consumers.

Nope.

> Outside the US, it seems incomprehensible that the average

Doesnt happen in the US, where the savings in the family home leaves that in asia for dead.

> But God takes care of drunks, small children and the United States
> of America. In other words, the typical American family expected the

Doesnt need to appreciate at that rate to be real savings.

> US home prices appreciated by 86% between 1996 and 2006;

So everyone except the stupid renters have real savings, in spite of the mindless claim above.

> like the Cargo Cults that proliferated in New Guinea after World
> War II, Americans seemed to think that this would go on forever.

It does go on forever in modern first world countrys, the rate just varies.

> Delusional expectations about home prices justified a trillion dollars
> of loans to borrowers with poor credit or inadequate income
> ("subprime" loans), and that is the proximate cause of the bubble.

Different matter entirely. The vast bulk of the loans arent sub prime.

<none of the rest of this even more mindless crap worth bothering with>

Interest only mortgages (IO) are something of a rage these days as
people use the real estate market as an investment. You will pay only
the interest on the loan for the first couple of years but beware the
unpredictable real estate market. Come selling time, the house may not
be worth as much as you paid for it and you will have to come up with
the extra money to pay the loan back...money that you may not have.

Government loans consist of loans that are in some way guaranteed or
purchased by government owned corporations or organizations. For
instance, GNMA (Government National Mortgage Association) assists in
the financing of urban renewal and housing projects by providing below-
market rates to low income families. GNMA guarantees the payment of
principal and interest on FHA and VA mortgages through its mortgage-
backed securities program. It operates under the Department of
Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Dry aged beef still smells like meat. Rotten meat smells foul and
obviously spoiled.

I grew up on "hung" beef (be quiet Sheldon!). My great-uncle, a butcher
in Jersey City, was proud of his ability to obtain and prepare the best
meats available. The minute he knew company was coming for dinner, he
would cut and hang fine steaks in anticipation. There is no taste equal
to that of a well-aged steak.

TOPIC: Twelve Proofs that Muhammad is a True Prophet

My brothers and sisters everywhere! With this essay, I am not singling
out the adherents of Islam - to which I ascribe - but rather I am
writing this essay to every man and woman throughout the whole world.

I ask Allah that He facilitates tat this essay reaches every ear,
falls under the sight of every eye, and is understood by every
heart...

Muhammad the son of `Abdullah is Allah's Prophet and the Final
Messenger Sent by Allah to the Inhabitants of Earth.

My brothers and sisters everywhere! You should know that the
Messenger, Muhammad the son of `Abdullah (may Allah's blessings and
peace be upon him) is Allah's Messenger in reality and truth. The
evidences that show his veracity are abundant. None but an infidel,
who out of arrogance alone, could deny these signs.

Among these proofs:

1. Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) was raised
illiterate, unable to read or write, and remained like that till his
death. Among all his people, he was known as being truthful and
trustworthy. Before receiving revelation, he had no prior knowledge of
Religion or any previously sent Message. He remained like that for his
first forty years. Revelation then came to Muhammad with the Koran
that we now have between our hands. This Koran mentioned most of the
accounts found in the previous scriptures, telling us about these
events in the greatest detail as if he witnessed them. These accounts
came precisely as they were found in the Torah sent down to Moses and
in the Gospel sent down to Jesus. Neither the Jews or Christians were
able to belie him regarding anything that he said.

2. Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) also
foretold of everything that would occur to him and his community after
him, pertaining to victory, the removal of the tyrannical kingdoms of
Chosroes [the royal title for the Zoroastrian kings of Persia] and
Caesar, and the establishment of the religion of Islam throughout the
earth. These events occurred exactly as Muhammad foretold, as if he
was reading the future from an open book.

3. Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) also brought
an Arabic Koran that is the peak of eloquence and clarity. The Koran
challenged those eloquent and fluent Arabs of his time, who initially
belied him, to bring forth a single chapter like the Koran. The
eloquent Arabs of his day were unable to contest this Koran.

Indeed, till our day, none has ever dared to claim that he has been
able to compose words that equal-or even approach-the order, grace,
beauty, and splendor of this Glorious Koran.

4. The life history of this Noble Prophet was a perfect example of
being upright, merciful, compassionate, truthful, brave, generous,
distant from all evil character, and ascetic in all worldly matters,
while striving solely for the reward of the Hereafter. Moreover, in
all his actions and dealings, he was ever mindful and fearful of
Allah.

5. Allah instilled great love for Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and
peace be upon him) in the hearts of all who believed in and met him.
This love reached such a degree that any of his companions would
willingly sacrifice his (or her) self, mother or father for him.

Till today, those who believe in Muhammad honor and love him. Anyone
of those who believe in him would ransom his own family and wealth to
see him, even if but once.

6. All of history has not preserved the biography of any person in the
manner it has preserved the life of Muhammad, who is the most
influential human in history.

Nor has the entire earth known of anyone whom every morning and
evening, and many times thereafter throughout the day, is thought of
by those who believe in him. Upon remembering Muhammad, the believers
in him will greet him and ask Allah to bless him. They do such with
full hearts and true love for him.

7. Nor has there every been a man on earth whom is still followed in
all his doings by those who believe in him.

Those who believe in Muhammad, sleep in the manner he slept; purify
themselves (through ablution and ritual washing) in the manner he
purified himself; and adhere to his practice in the way they eat,
drink, and clothe themselves.

Indeed in all aspects of their lives, the believers in Muhammad adhere
to the teachings he spread among them and the path that he traveled
upon during his life.

During every generation, from his day till our time, the believers in
this Noble Prophet have fully adhered to his teachings. With some,
this has reached the degree that they desire to follow and adhere to
the Prophet's way in his personal matters regarding which Allah has
not sought of them to adhere to in worship. For example, some will
only eat those specific foods or only wear those specific garments
that the Messenger liked.

Let alone all that, all those who believe in Muhammad repeat those
praises of Allah, special prayers, and invocations that he would say
during each of his actions during day and night, like: what he would
say when he greeted people, upon entering and leaving the house,
entering and leaving the mosque, entering and leaving the bathroom,
going to sleep and awaking from sleep, observing the new crescent,
observing the new fruit on trees, eating, drinking, dressing, riding,
traveling and returning from travel, etc.

Let alone all that, all those who believe in Muhammad fully perform-
even to the minute detail-every act of worship-like prayer, fasting,
charity, and pilgrimage-as this Noble Messenger (may Allah's blessings
and peace be upon him) taught and as he himself performed.

All of this allows those who believe in him, to live their lives in
all aspects with this Noble Messenger as their example, as if he was
standing before them, for them to follow in all their doings.

8. There has never been nor will there ever be a man anywhere upon
this earth who has received such love, respect, honor, and obedience
in all matters-small and large alike-as has this Noble Prophet.

9. Since his day, in every region of the earth and during every
period, this Noble Prophet has been followed by individuals from all
races, colors and peoples. Many of those who followed him were
previously Christians, Jews, pagans, idolaters, or without any
religion. Among those who chose to follow him, were those who were
known for their sound judgment, wisdom, reflection, and foresight.
They chose to follow this Noble Prophet after they witnessed the signs
of his truthfulness and the evidences of his miracles. They did not
choose to follow Muhammad out of compulsion or coercion or because
they had adopted the ways of their fathers and mothers.

Indeed many of the followers of this Prophet (may Allah's blessings
peace be upon him), chose to follow him during the time when Islam was
weak, when there were few Muslims, and when there was severe
persecution of his followers on earth. Most people who have followed
this Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) have done
so not to acquire some material benefits. Indeed many of his followers
have suffered the greatest forms of harm and persecution as a result
of following this Prophet. Despite all this harm and persecution, this
did not turn them back from his religion.

My brethren! All of this clearly indicates to anyone possessing any
sense, that this Prophet was truly and really Allah's messenger and
that he was not just a man who claimed prophethood or spoke about
Allah without knowledge.

10. With all this, Muhammad came with a great religion in its credal
and legal make-up.

Muhammad described Allah with qualities of complete perfection, and at
the same time in a manner that is free of ascribing to Him any
imperfection. Neither the philosophers or the wise could ever describe
Allah like such. Indeed it is impossible to imagine that any human
mind could conceive of an existing being that possesses such complete
ability, knowledge, and greatness; Who has subdued the creation; Who
has encompassed everything in the universe, small or large; and Who
possesses such perfect mercy.

Nor is it in the ability of any human being to place a perfect law
based upon justice, equality, mercy and objectivity for all human
activity on earth like the laws that Muhammad brought for all spheres
of human activity - like buying and selling, marriage and divorce,
renting, testimony, custody, and all other contracts that are
necessary to uphold life and civilization on earth.

11. It is impossible that any person conceive wisdom,, morals, good
manners, nobleness of characters as what this honorable Prophet (may
Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) brought.

In a full and complete manner, Muhammad spread a teaching regarding
character and manners toward one' parents, relatives, fiends, family,
humanity, animals, plants and inanimate objects. It is impossible for
the human mind alone to grasp all of that teaching or come with a
similar teaching.

All of that unequivocally indicates that this Messenger did not bring
an) of this religion from his own accord, but that it was rather a
teaching and inspiration that he received from the One Who created the
earth and the high heavens above and created this universe in its
miraculous architecture and perfection.

12. The legal and credal make-up of the religion that the Messenger,
Muhammad, (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) brought
resembles the engineering of the heavens and the earth. All of that
indicates that He who created the heavens and the earth is the One Who
sent down this great law and upright religion.

The degree of inimitability of the Divine law that was sent down upon
Muhammad is to the same degree of inimitability of the Divine creation
of the heavens and earth. For just as humanity cannot create this
universe, in the same manner humanity cannot bring forth a law like
Allah's law that He sent down upon His servant and messenger Muhammad
(may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him).

Dear Abby,

I am a crack dealer in Beaumont, Texas who has recently been diagnosed
as a carrier of HIV virus. My parents live in Fort Worth and one of my
sisters, who lives in Pflugerville, is married to a transvestite.

My father and mother have recently been arrested for growing and selling
marijuana. They are financially dependent on my other two sisters, who
are prostitutes in Dallas.

I have two brothers, one is currently serving a life sentence at
Huntsville for the murder of a teenage boy in 1994. My other brother is
currently in jail awaiting charges of sexual misconduct with his three
children.

I have recently become engaged to marry a former prostitute who lives in
Longview, She is a part time "working girl."

All things considered, my problem is this. I love my fiancé and look
forward to bringing her into the family. I certainly want to be totally
open and honest with her. Should I tell her about my cousin who supports
Hillary Clinton for President?

Signed,
Worried About My Reputation

Heck, I did heavy duty image editing in 1997-1998 or so with a 400 MHz
Pentium II running Windows 3.1, hacked a bit by using the extended memory
manager from Windows 95 to allow Windows 3.1 to access roughly 128 meg as
opposed to roughly 64 meg of RAM.
If I stayed with 64 meg, that merely limited image size more than a 128
meg RAM limit imposed. Since I then used an older photo editor that
appeared to need at least 3 copies in memory and I also had the "temporary
directory" in a RAM drive and also used RAM for a disk cache that needed
to be big enough to hold the image being processed, that became a good
argument to just use Windows 95 in whole as soon as I wanted more
than 128 meg of RAM - and to use a more efficient photo editor that I got
with a flatbed scanner around 1998.

The 400 MHz Pentium II came out in April 1994.

Meanwhile, I now see only slight slowness using my model number "3.2"
AMD Athlon (technology a good 3 years old) with even heavy-duty editing of
pictures from my 10 megapixel camera. I believe that the "1.33+" Athlon
"Thunderbird" that became available at least 4.5-5 years ago is still
reasonably usable for this, though my current camera has USB 2 and I
suspect that might be a little newer than the "1.33" Athlon "Thunderbird".

I bought my kids Columbia backpacks last year. They are still in good
shape for use again this year. IIRC, I even found them on sale at an
online retailer for what seemed like a really good price.

Yes, a Mrs T is to pierogie as Big Mac is to filet mignon.

IIRC the pierogies my mother made were filled with cottage cheese
and onion. One of these days I've got to get out her recipe and
cook up a batch.

and potato cheese ones maybe tasty, but they're really not the best
example of pierogi at their best..

meat filled, kraut, kraut and mushroom are really good. And, summer ones
filled with fruit are a special treat. Just had some strawberry filled
ones this weekend, the blueberry ones are to die for, especially with a
little drizzle of sourcream w/ sugar and cinnamon.

World History

Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic
hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer
and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were the invention of
beer and the invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to
the beer. These were the foundation of modern civilization and together
were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:

1. Liberals
2. Conservatives

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of
agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet,
so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for the m to be
invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were
formed.

Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to B-B-Q at night
while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as
the Conservation movement.

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off
the conservatives by showing up for the nightly B-B-Q's and doing the
sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal
movement.

Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became
known as girlie-men.

Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats,
the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of Democratic
voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that conservatives
provided.

Over the years conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most
powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the
jackass.

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but prefer white
wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well
done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare.

Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have
higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, attorneys,
journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals.
Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make
the pitcher also bat.

Conservatives drink domestic beer. They eat red meat and still provide
for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys,
lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police
officers, corporate executives, athletes, Marines, sailors, airmen,
soldiers, and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who
own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.

Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers
and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are
more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained
in Europe when conservatives were coming to America . They crept in after
the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for
nothing.

Here ends today's lesson in world history:

It should be noted that a Liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily
respond to the above before forwarding it.

A Conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth
of this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true
believers and to more liberals just to tick them off
