Considering I'm in California and we're in the middle of a heat
wave...I'm not looking forward to next month's bill (the meter reader
will be by in the next 2 days, too). You'd think with as much sun as
we have here the various utilities would be putting solar panels and
windmills everywhere to offset the cost. Luckily where I am we are a
little less expensive than the norm for the state though.

It would appear that filling in the wall cavities with bricks and mortar
was common. Now that is a very sold sound proof wall.
There's very little where I live that is that old (Sherman took care of
that!) The little I see of that age are mostly rural homes that the park
service has saved. A very different type of construction and rarely with
any interior finish.
It's always interesting to learn something new!

apparently one for farm hands originally. Have seen a picture from 1903 -
hause basically the same - except 'garage' doors were on the north side

I would bet that a "properly built" house today will use a lot less
heat than yours. 2x6s 24" on center construction is certainly
better than 2x4s on 16" centers, and even somewhat better than 2x6s
16" on center. Wood is a pretty poor insulator.

Better built except for the whole drafty thing, poor insulation,

No, it's really not. Kerosene *IS* #1 (as in K-1 Kerosene). It is
the same stuff as #2 fuel oil with the paraffin removed. Kerosene
is used in place of #2 if there is a chance of freezing temperatures
around the tank and lines (e.g. mobile homes). Every oil furnace
I've ever seen can use either. In fact Kerosene is often used to
fie people over if they run out of #2.

Read anything about the flap over Viacom getting a court to order Google to
turn over its records on everyone who's used You Tube and what they've
posted and watched? If you want your private stuff to stay private, don't
put it in someone else's hands. This is supposedly a free service. Think a
minute - providing this service costs someone money, and somehow they have
to get it back and probably turn a profit. How are they going to do that
when they give away their product?

The chickens have arrived... and are living in my cargo trailer for a
day or two. 16 culls of Cobb type meat birds. I've been waiting on
building a chicken tractor, now have the materials and just need to
get in gear. I've no idea if all of them will make it, but the price
($0) was too good to pass up, especially since we want layers in a
while.
These birds are scarey compliant and quiet. With the back gate to the
trailer down, only two decided to take a walk outside, and those were
easily rounded up. Not what I remember from my youth. They now have
water, feed, a few squash bugs for entertainment, and some straw.
I'll see how many make it through the night. One or two seem to be
more chicken-like than the rest.
