The materials for the house I built myself, physically.

Because our tax system doesnt tax the principle residence on
capital gain and that produced one hell of an income tax free
at the time that I was building it, much more than the boss
of the operation I was working for was getting at the time.

Arguably the stocks I bought well before that was a better purchase,
but that wasnt a single purchase or even a single group of purchases
at roughly the same time, essentially because I was trading in those
stocks over decades, I started doing it when still in school, quite
literally, so that doesnt really qualify for your question.

Its am impossible question for me to answer. I can give you some very
good purchases that I am very glad I made, but picking the best from
that list? Nope, I can't do it.

Here's my list in no particular order of importance.

1. My portable GPS. It helps me avoid getting lost when I drive in
unfamiliar areas. In these days of high gas prices, I don't
like wasting gas driving around looking for places. My GPS saves
me, time, money, and gas, and it even fits easily in my backpack
for when I travel.

2. My 2008 Toyota Prius that I bought a few months ago. In researching
what new car to buy, I figured the cut-off point for financially
justifying the cost of my car was around $4.00 per gallon for gas.
I figured the gas price in my area would get to that point in a year
or two, but it looks like it will be there in two or three months.

3. My Apple MacBook Pro. I take it everywhere with me and it just
works and works and works.

4. The Toro grass trimmer I bought for my dad for Fathers Day a
few years ago. My dad is by far the most difficult person I know
to shop for. He is not a materialistic person at all. He has only
a few interests and he has what he needs. I was in Home Depot and
I saw an electric grass trimmer. I figured, what the hell, I can't
figure out what to buy him for Fathers Day so I bought him that
grass trimmer. I figured that the odds were pretty good that he
will return it, but maybe he wouldn't this time. Much to my surprise,
he loved that grass trimmer and he got so emotional when I gave it
to him that tears welled up in his eyes. I was stunned!

5. The used digital camera I gave to the 13 year old daughter of one
of my cousins for her birthday. She loved it and she is really
learning to shoot good photos, not just cheesy snapshots, with it.

6. The Canon Digital Rebel XSi camera I bought last month. I am an
avid photographer and this is the best camera I have owned.

My best purchase was a recent purchase of a TV. It is a $300 Emerson
which I ordered from Walmart. It provides me with hours of
entertainment every evening. It has a built in DVD player although I
haven't used it yet (except to test that it works) so I can rent
movies from Netflix if I choose. So far, my favorite programs are on
PBS..."Nightly business Report", "California Gold", British mysteries,
etc.

If this is the case, then why is Legionnaire's disease not running rampant
in locations like southern Arizona where the outside temperatures are
commonly in the 100's and the "cold water" is warm (in this temperature
range) most of the year?

Will Legionnaire's disease grow in chlorinated water in a closed system like
a water heater which is not open to the outside air?

I would think that Legionnaire's disease would need to be present in the
chlorinated city water system for this to occur?

Or that the chlorine in city water would kill it?

But maybe not greywater... This NSF-certified system could do both

http://www.epa.gov/ne/assistance/ceitts/wastewater/techs/norweco.html

but it costs more ($15K?) and requires some maintenance, eg replacing
the aerator motor and adding chlorine hockey pucks.

Which red flag do you not see? Run, don't walk, from situations like
this.

It isn't about not being able to put in a working alternative septic
system, it is about laws and regulations. On 1/2 acre, your options
are limited. You likely won't get an alternative system approved, and
even if you do, that approval can be rescinded, modified, or revoked,
depending on political winds.

Somebody built where they shouldn't have, and the payoff has come.
The only sensible possibility is contacting the neighbors surrounding
the property to see if they would like to purchase parts or all of it
if you removed the house. Then buy it for a song, get a house mover
to take the house to inexpensive land that complies, and sell off the
land.

An unsecured loan is by definition, an investment that isn't backed up by
anything more than the debtor's ability to earn future income long enough to
generate a profitable return for the investor.

The lender is paid extra interest for the risk of loaning without insured
collateral.

So I don't see what's unethical here. It's not like anyone's saying they're
borrowing unsecured funds knowing that they're going to kill themselves the
next day and leave an insolvent estate.

AARP has a plan, and if you search for "term life insurance" I'm sure
you'll find alternatives. I wouldn't go with pre-paid, after reading
numerous horror stories about such plans. When I go, I want to be
turned into Soylent Green, so that everybody can yell "Soylent Green
is Chickpeas!" and grab their crackers and pita bread.

I used to take a long, hot shower every morning. As hot as I could stand
it, and as long as I could make it without making myself late or something
along those lines. I loved hot showers because they were so soothing and
relaxing for aching muscles.

Finally, one day I bought a new mattress, and I discovered that for at
*least* 10 years, if not my whole life, practically, I'd had sore muscles
and a stiff neck for no good reason at all. It was the cruddy mattress
(or series of cruddy mattresses) the whole time. Oops. Live and learn.

Al, I think you need to stay away from cars before your luck runs out.
