Two gender job eh? So you are saying same sex couples can be the two
parents if one is masculine and the other is feminine. That lib talk

Well, you're preaching to the choir on that one- a significant
percentage of the people shacking up/marrying and having kids are not
competent to perform any of those duties. Except for the small matter of
there not being anyone competent to sit in judgment about people's skill
sets, I'd say that having kids should require a training course and
getting a license.

But reproduction, like love and lust, is by definition an irrational
process. The genes want what the genes want. And once the kids are
there, you don't get a do-over. You have to make do as best you can.

But I still say a single parent household is better than a broken
2-parent household. BTDT, from the kid side. Once they only saw each
other a few hours a month, they got along a lot better. And both of them
were able to devote quality time to us young ones. The older kids,
separated from us younger ones by several years, said it was traumatic
as hell to be going through adolescence in a battle zone.

As long as both parents get time with the kids, and avoid stabbing each
other in the back, then, yeah, I agree. If babydaddy (or momma) disappears
or is cut out tho I'd seriously wonder about it.
Regardless tho we can agree that it sucks either way and some kids would be
better off being raised by wolves ($1 to Adam Carolla).

If you're concerned about the population, why not start by kicking out
20,000,000 illegal immigrants?

Regrettably, neither it or the DTT901 (adds analog pass-through) are
available at any Circuit City stores within 80 miles of me.

Target has a GE box which is getting negative reviews (on their own
web site!) and a Venturer box which is cheaper and reportedly better.

Also came across a web site I hadn't seen that has an extensive list of
coupon-eligible boxes, plus a few non-eligible ones.

Speaking of which, anyone have any experience with any of these?

Yes the DTT900 does not have analog passthrough but from what I've read on the
Comparison of CECB units page on Wikipedia, the DTT901 does passthrough. Could
you be mistaken?

Kinda amusing since the DTVPal was so highly anticipated it developed a
cult-like following, but the Zenith was among the first offered. From
what I understand, the Insignia sold at Best Buy is essentially the same
as the Zenith.

I recently read a tip about using a car windshield shade, with the
reflective silver or whatever you call it, for home windows. I tried it
and it worked wonderfully, but I had no way to attach the shade in
place except adhesive tape on the window or with clothespins attached to
the drapes. I want to get the same reflective material and make a
removable shade with either suction cups or velcro or whatever to put
over a picture window and sliding glass doors. A Google search found
motor home solar shades that attach with suction cups, but I really
would like just want the material so I can cut it to the exact needed
size. Suggestions?

We did look at roll-up window shades. The problem is that they would
interefere with the current window dressings (vertical blinds and drapes).

Solar blankets that are sold at WalMart can be cut and sewn (if desired,
they are fine w/ just the cut edge too). They are around $3.00 per huge
blanket.

You can come close with the reflective blankets used by campers, such
as this:

http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___81284

They come with other colors on the reverse side; I have one in green,
and I think I've seen red as well. They should hang fine with Velcro.

The big-box home centers will have a thin reflective barrier material,
but it's not designed for frequent handling. The camping blankets will
hold up very well.

Not exactly the same, but you could take a sheet of corrugated
cardboard, use spray cement to attach aluminum foil on one side, and
then more spray cement to attach fabric or wallpaper to the opposite
side. Cut to fit with an x-acto, including some wedge tabs to hold it
in place. It'll warp some, which is why you want to adhere something
to both sides. Cardboard is a little safer than using something like
expanded foam.

Well, I never thought of looking in camping equipment, but this just
might do. Thanks a lot.

Oh, I like that idea. Very frugal! Thank you very much.

The double-duty ones look good, but I wonder if they will fit between
our existing curtains and vertical blinds. Will investigate further.
Thank you.

You might also look at sheets of polyisocyanurate. It has a reflective
side and it is insulation. You could leave it in for winter. It's pretty
cheap... and tolerates hight temps. 1/2" sheets are rated at R3 and are
well under $10 for a 4 x 8.

$151.04 (down from $254.83 last year) and for 851 KWh (down from 1443
last year and 1232 the previous year!).

Some may be due to differences to outdoor temperature, but we also
raised the temperature on the A/C to 79 and swapped out most of our
bulbs to CFLs. We also power off the monitor and printer when the PC is
not in use for a while, have powered off our second PC altogether, and
switched the dehumidifier to a 3 hours on/3 hours off cycle.

You may be right, but I read this differently than you do. I can't say
that I've seen a house of that era that had vertical plank walls that
was completely solid. Building styles vary depending on access to
materials but I would be surprised if her walls were solid.

You didn't want your parents to stay together?

Children in single parent families are more likely to do poorly in
school, drop-out, take drugs, get involved in crime and have children
out of wedlock.

Did you suffer from any of these pitfalls?

Better a single parent with time and sanity to care about the kids, than
a couple locked in battle royal and other melodrama (like ten years of
icy silence to each other), to the point where the kids hide under their
beds, or worse, are simply invisible. Not to mention the usual villains
of one parent being a drunk or druggie, or abusive. Sure, a reasonably
happy and stable 2-parent household where the kids have a model of what
an adult relationship is supposed to be like, is best. But if that isn't
happening, yes, the kids are better off with just the saner parent, or
elsewhere. 'Staying together for the kids' is almost always a crock. Not
saying people shouldn't give their marriages an honest effort, but once
it fails, be realistic.

So you are OK with the trend - especially with blacks, which is now
over 50% - to have more single parent households?

No such thing. They may mean well, don't get me wrong, but parenting is a
two person, two GENDER job. And I don't give a damn about the politics of
the situation, the fact is men and women bring different abilities to the
table and children benefit from them both. Rather than saying that angry
couples should or should not stay together "for the children", I say the
dumb selfish bastards shouldn't have had the kid(s) to begin with.

Two gender job eh? So you are saying same sex couples can be the two
parents if one is masculine and the other is feminine. That lib talk

I would say more likely 5 minutes but since the hotspot created by the
burning foam will insure ignition of the rest of the house it may be a
few hours...

If JJ truly does not have the cash to make her house warm in winter, and
doesn't want to (or have the cash to) move, she should investigate any
local senior assistance programs for home repairs. Many areas have
programs where volunteers will assist in making plastic interior storms
for the old leaky windows, caulking any visible gaps, sealing and
insulating ducts that go through unheated spaces, sealing foundation
leaks, etc, etc. Discount electric space heaters are usually part of the
deal as well. Blankets and quilts hung on walls or over windows for
insulation are a BAD idea. (Ask your fire department why.)

If you have opened it and it is not faulty, I do not think they have to
accept it. After all, I'm sure some people have ripped shops off by this
method, notably clothing shops though.

I have a DigitalStream converter (Radioshack) that works great. But I
have pretty strong signal/reception at my location (on a mountain top
with a straight shot to the towers, roof antenna, distribution
amplifier).

Having subscribed to multiple DSL services and multiple cable modem
services, it is my honest opinion that, at the same price, DSL is a
better deal, even if the advertised top speed is a little lower than
cable modem service in the same area. I've seen significant slowdowns
on cable modem service, especially on school holidays. DSL is much
more consistent in service speed (both upload and download), even
though theoretically it is all shared bandwidth at some point.

If someone were to offer a 1.5M DSL connection for $26 or a 3M cable
modem connection for the same price, I wouldn't hesitate to sign up for
the DSL service.

Having said that, people in the frugal living ng should be aware that
most cable companies offer a "slower" speed cable modem service to be
more competitive with DSL prices. The catch is, it's not advertised.
For example, Time Warner offers a Roadrunner Lite service for about $25
per month, capped around 768K download speed. This is ridiculously
slow as far as cable modems go, but still more than adequate for most
home Internet users. The only people who wouldn't like 768K would be
heavy downloaders, like heavy P2P users. Most cable providers
offer a similar deal. But again, they don't like to advertise it,
as they'd rather let you believe that your only option is the 5-8M
(or so) service for $50 - $60 per month. -Dave

I have suggested the unpublished "economy" cable modem tier to a number
of relatives and friends and no one has complained. As you said a lot of
folks just don't need or use anything faster and are essentially
throwing $25/month away.

A couple of my neighbors on my street have solar panels, but I think
that they just use them because they work in energy conservation.

Solar is starting to become practical where there is plenty of
sunshine and electric rates are high. Remote locations, where one
can't get on the grid at all offer the best payoff, but some type of
battery storage would then be necessary.

Completely wrong. They want all couples to be married before having sex,
thereby ensuring that the MAN won't enjoy it.

You didn't want your parents to stay together?

Children in single parent families are more likely to do poorly in
school, drop-out, take drugs, get involved in crime and have children
out of wedlock.

Did you suffer from any of these pitfalls?

Ouch!!! that is one heck of an rate increase. We have one here in KY
coming soon. Super insulating is order for me, along with the other to

We also have had a cool June. No record lows, but upper 50's in June a

I've had the same experience with McD's "free" wifi as Dave. In the
case of the one nearest me, they're walking distance from a Panera's
AND a local coffee shop, both of which are truly free hot spots. So
it's not likely they'll be selling many subscriptions at that store.

If you need daily internet access, and have to make a special trip to
a hot spot, you really should subscribe to an ISP. Dial up is cheap,
but IMO way too slow to be useful. Cable, again IMO, is way too
expensive. I've found DSL to be a reasonable compromise. I get a
1.5Mbs connection for $26.00 a month, guaranteed for life with a 2
year contract, as part of a bundle with my phone company. Plenty fast
enough for most routine uses. About the only time it ever stutters is
with hi res streaming video.
