Not a good idea anyways.

Since you've said absolutely nothing about what the noise is or where it
is coming from, and the crystal ball is on loan, I can only guess.

If this is a buzz or a rattle it may be the compressor. The compressor
is suspended from springs in an oil filled enclosure. If the
refrigerator is not level, or if one of these springs has weakened the
compressor will touch a side and vibrate against it. You can see if this
is the problem by leaning the refrigerator slightly in one direction or
another. That would also be your "fix".

And Don is absolutely right. Refrigerators have come a long way in
efficiency.

I'm not an appliance tech, so my understanding of this may be a bit off.

Google the appliance repair sites like repairclinic.com and they can
walk you through the problem.
The blankets will only cause damage to the appliance by overheating
it.
If the refrigerator works other than the noise, you may only have a
bad fan or something may have contacted the fan and makes the noise
like a kid with a card or stick in the spokes of his bike. The repair
sites will help you check.

"Baby-Minder" Bean Bag Infant Cushions Recalled Because Of Suffocation
Risk

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Fourth Little Pig, San Anselmo, CA, in
cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is
voluntarily recalling its Baby-Minder bean bag infant cushions because
of a suffocation risk. Although no deaths have been reported involving
the Baby-Minder, the Commission has received reports of 19 infants
being found dead lying face down on similar products made by other
firms.

Baby-Minder is a fabric covered, polystyrene pellet-filled cushion
with restraining straps intended for use with infants. The
manufacturer's name and address, along with patent and registry
numbers, appear on a paper tag stitched into a seam of the product.
The Fourth Little Pig name is also on a smaller tag containing washing
instructions. Approximately 3,000 Baby-Minder cushions have been sold
since 1985 for approximately $40 each.

The Commission staff urges consumers who own these products to stop
using them immediately.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission protects the public from
the unreasonable risk of injury or death from 15,000 types of consumer
products under the agency's jurisdiction. To report a dangerous
product or a product-related injury and for information on CPSC's fax-
on-demand service, call CPSC's hotline at (800) 638-2772 or CPSC's

Our best local corn is going for 40 cents an ear - down from the 50
cents several weeks ago for non native corn.

Tomtoes and tomato juice are acidic. I have found that the very
cheapest canned tomatoes are usually in the cheapest of cans: cans
that do not have a plastic ('painted') interior. The result being
that there is some etching of the tin lining of the metal can which
may impart a distinctive "tinny" metallic taste to the contents.

Evidently disolved metallic tin does not pose a health hazard, but if
noticeable it can spoil the taste of the tomatoes. This is exacerbated
with prolonged storage, both in the distributor's warehouse and in your
pantry.

Some brands are worse in this respect, so buy just a couple of cans as
a test before investing in a whole carton. YMMV

Sandwiches, too....

Harry, I guess your gardening efforts must have been ectoplasmic
inspiration to me, although, coincidence probably is more likely: This
Spring, after a nearly ten-year hiatus, I rejuvenated a few of the
raised beds DW built during the 1990's and resumed shepherding a small
"to the need" community garden that has been surprisingly productive,
considering all of the time that it lay fallow. We no longer attempt to
produce quantities for preservation, although, DW&I do freeze (or
dehydrate) excess in order to prevent waste.
Since late May, have had a steady stream of fresh "better boy" as
well as little "husky cherry red" tomatoes. The cherry tomatoes are
spousal indulgence; I prefer indeterminates because they'll yield nice
big tomatoes until December or January. I noticed yesterday that the
"better boy" have resumed blossoming, after a cloud/rain induced break,
so I guess it's time for me to get involved in their sex lives once
again: Hand-pollination because the few "pollinators" that are active
this time-of-year are looking for water, not for flower juice. I keep
basins of fresh water in each of the beds so the predatory wasps are
still helping me out.
In addition, okra (Clemson spineless); blackeyed peas;
eggplant/aubergine (black beauty); "bell" peppers; and basil (spicy
globe) are producing. The fourth planting of blackeyed peas (it replaced
the peanuts under the okra) is about half-grown; third planting is just
about played out and its bed will be used for "greens", mustard, most
likely, even though collards are more heat tolerant. Few phenomena are
more depressing than seeing a cute little young mustard with bright
yellow blossoms but I'll chance it. Just yesterday, completed planting
of the second bed of "Delinel" snap-beans for October/November harvest.
From late February or early March, I'll succession-plant more Delinels
for a continuous yield into August, when they just can't cope with the
long hot humid days.
>
>tilling for the cool weather crops of kale and collards and cabbagy stuff that we have
>started.
Although, I do not "till", some hand tools are required to redeem
the beds from their fallow state. As a rule, I use no tools to work the
garden soil because of their destructive effect on the soft-bodied
instars of the insectivorous wasps and native solitary bees. No Japanese
beetles here and native beetle "grubs" are not numerous enough to be a
problem. I don't begrudge them the occasional root snack any more than I
mind paying a "bean tax" to the tufted titmouses....
Over the next couple of weeks, will rejuvenate at least two more
beds to accomodate cool-weather items: Lettuce, other "greens",
"English" garden peas, maybe cabbage and maybe cauliflower. Although, I
like nothing else better than freshly cropped cauliflower, it's a bit
"iffy" down here because of the shortage of cool days during the
fall-winter growing season. We almost never have enough contiguous days
of cool weather to make broccoli, Brussel's sprouts, or other
long-season "cool weather" veggies worthwhile. Potatoes will be
barrel-grown and they go in in December.
Neither of us cares for corn or squash well enough to devote any
effort -- or garden area -- to either, although, with an early start we
do manage a few "hills" of cucumber. At its best, Florida-grown corn is
insipid, anyway, and in order to get a decent crop of it or of "summer"
squash, one must plant them early enough in the year that there remains
some frost danger because if the crop is not "in" by May or early June,
then the insects make further efforts futile. I live in a sort-of
developed semi-rural area, so there is no reasonable defense against
that variety of incipient, shield-shaped, juice-sucking, virus spreading
insects that generically just seem to go as "plant bugs" that shelter in
the "woods".
You may find this useful when planning planting dates:
http://www.weatherbase.com/search/search.php3?refer=
although, I notice that for your area, averages are compiled over what
seems a fairly short span; and
http://www.accuweather.com/ for short-term forecasts.
Accuweather has a long history and reputation for accurate
commercial weather forecasting and their free public forecasts seem to
be more reliable than NWS forecasts and 'way-y-y better than Weather.com
(the weather channel; it's for sale, btw, if you're looking for a
retirement plan....). Production companies used to (and may, still,
FAIK) buy shoot-day forecasts from accuweather back in the day.

Only a fool doesn't change oil every 5k miles. I expect my vehicles to
last a minimum of 250K miles.

Oil changes are a minimal / essentially negligible cost to extend the
life span.

I have quit changing my oil since I got a new car and can't get the
filter in and out without crawling completely under the car. And
I don't have a handy way to get completely under there. I have some
ramps, but the car's bumper hits the ramp before the wheels, so that
doesn't work. So now I take it to an oil change place.

My big problem there is finding one that will just change the oil and
filter for a reasonable price without doing a lot of other stuff and
over charging.

If you really want to DIY you can buy ramps that go in front of your
current ramps. They allow you to get your car bumpers to clear your
current ramps.

No. Unfortunately the cars I've owned in the last 15 years are too
low to the ground the the filter is mostly inaccessible laying on the
ground under the car. But I still "know how".

Well, the old one that I've carried for years needed repair -- the
plastic lens and reflector finally died (I suspect death by DEET and
heat) -- and I tried the DIY conversion kit on a whim. Don't even know
what else is available. Thanks for the information; I'll certainly take
a look at the "latest and greatest", although, unless the ready-rolled
LED version is clearly superior I'll likely just by parts and repair the
oldie. Battery life is not an issue.

As lumps of meat and fillets begin to spoil from the outside, if you
have raw meat its surface can be washed and rubbed down under a
running tap, then patted dry on paper towels. This will remove light
spoilage (surface slime) before cooking. Always keep meat under
refrigeration while marinading.

Minced meat doesn't lend itself to this, so eating mince that is
past its best is not worth the risk.

Mom taught me to use a vinegar rinse on meat with surface spoilage/slime.
Always seems to work.

for years I have followed the old refrain "an apple a day keeps the
doctor away".
And regularly have eaten one or two apples a day.

Now with the high cost of apples I have switched to apple sauce.
My preference is those individual containers that hold, typically, 4
ounces of apple sauce.

If you look closely, the sugar content varies.
My choice is "no sugar added".

How do you save 5 bucks? The materials alone are usually more than it costs
to have our garage do it. Then you have to consider the gas you will burn
when you haul the used oil to a recycling facility. -Dave

Yeah, I figured it out last time, and you hardly save any money at all

I find the $5-10 savings a quick, easy savings. Actually, driving to
get an oil change every other month would add significantly to the cost,
never mind the waste of time to / from / waiting for it to be completed..

I save the oil and make one trip per year to the recycling center which
is perhaps a mile further than where I'd have the oil changed.

You get an oil change every other month? You must either be obsessive
about maintaining your car or you are a high mileage driver. I have
never done my car's oil changes. I prefer to take it to the dealer or
one of those oil change places. I do this for two reasons. First, my
lease does not allow me to do auto work on my apartment's grounds.
Second, I hate doing auto work and I am no good at it. The only auto
maintenance I do myself is wash my car, which I usually do by hand.

Up until last January, I drove a beat up old car and it did fine with
7,000 mile oil changes. I have a 2008 Prius now and it likes 5,000 mile
oil changes. I only drive around 1,000 miles a month, so I have only had
to have the oil changed once on my Prius. I prefer to drop off my Prius
at the dealer where I bought it, in the morning. Instead of waiting, I
hop on a bus and go to work, then I pick it up that evening. For my
first oil change, I spent $70, but I also had some other things done. I
think the actual cost of the oil change was maybe $30. My Pruis is due
for its second oil change in a month.

Both. I know the price is a fix and that our ex-neighbors in Florida
can get them for 20 cents an ear. What ticked me off was more the
poor harvest of corn, and I had some control over that. I'm not sure
how I'll handle it next year. In the meantime, it is bags of the

They probably have exaggerated claims of light output.

In general, white, non-yellowish-green and blue LEDs have higher
scotopic/photopic ratio than incandescents, especially low wattage ones.
That makes a significant difference where night vision has any role.

Now, for LED lights that truly produce 30 lumens and which should be OK:
Doggone, I am not aware of any that are diffused and not directional.

One can be homebrewed: Luxeon star, 10 ohm resistor at least a watt
(sandstome style 5 and 10 watt ones are cheap and convenient), a
5 volt cellphone charger, and an appropriate diffuser, and a .315 or .5
amp fuse in case something goes wrong.

However, a 3 watt compact fluorescent produces about 100 lumens. Also,
that wattage is usually cold cathode - meaning generally longer life.
Look for a life rating of 20,000 or 25,000 hours or so.

I have tried 2-AA and 3-AA LED MAGs. Not conversions, but made as LED
flashlights. I found the 2-AA one a little dim, but I do like the 3-AA
one. And it is adjustable.

I suspect it can be "souped up" by replacing the LED with a Luxeon
K2-with-TFFC, which is a more efficient LED than the one I see in the unit
I bought about a year ago.

How old is this fridge? If it was made in the mid, maybe late 1980's or
so or longer ago, then there is a fair chance you can afford a new one by
reducing your electric bill by something like $5-$10 possibly more per
month.
