In the past two months, bears have been popping out windows at an
alarming rate, crawling into as many as 15 cars a night and, if they
smell food in the trunks, ripping through the rear seats. Hondas, Dodge
Caravans and older Toyotas have been favorite targets, but one
late-model BMW convertible sustained $5,000 in damage.

The bears are not easily discouraged. Males at this time of year can
weigh over 350 pounds, females 250 pounds; some can stand 6 feet tall on
their hind legs. Rangers say there may be 350 to 550 bears in the park.
About 20 of them are considered ''campground bears,'' virtually addicted
to human food.

Some bears have broken into cars that contained no food. Rangers
speculate that the bears were drawn by leftover food smells, the scent
of perfume or suntan lotion. Perhaps -- the most worrisome possibility
-- the bears simply enjoyed it.

Have to have hernia surgery; only have Medicare.

My choices are go to emergency room and take pot luck on the surgeon at a hospital not exactly known for it's excellence OR go to doctors office and probably have them ask me for a deposit before they will do anything. My guess is emergency room will result in big overcharges that they will want me to pay only I am judgement proof-they cannot get blood from a turnip, OR go to private surgeon; my guess is he will say, you need to deposit XX dollars before I will do it. Anyone here been in a similar situation that can offer helpful advice or information? Thanks much!

Emergency rooms are for emergencies. If you're not having bowel
incarceration (and you'd probably know this and it would be an
emergency!) you don't belong in an emergency room for this.
Since you know about it in advance you have time to find a doctor who
accepts Medicare and can arrange to find one that uses the hospital you
prefer.

Why don't you eat me, smartass. I use CFL bulbs in my home where they're
warranted, I just want the option to use incandescents in certain
situations also. I have a sneaking suspicion the majority of Americans do
too.

Its funny you claim that the poster doesn't care about waste. You
see, you can toss a regular lightbulb into the trash since it is
basically safe. But the new CF bulbs are hazardous materials that
have to be handled by special licensed contractors. The contents
of those bulbs can kill you. Talk about waste...

There's always someone making excuses rather than moving forward with
conservation. Same thing with global warming which this is not so
coincidentally linked.

Can you imagine where we would be if we had not had CAFE standards. If
all the cars had the same fuel efficiency and smog standards that they
had in the 50's and 60's?

You can get low mercury CFLs if you like. Or recycle, they are
harmless if unbroken.

You still have that option. Specialty and low wattage lamps are exempt.
There's few places where an edison base lamp couldn't be replaced with
one of the CFLs satisfactorily. It pays to not buy the cheap discount
store CFLs. And as Don pointed out, you can buy the new halogens, which
will certainly fall in price.

I'd still like to use R12, but the switchover did close the ozone
hole. Remember that?

Sometimes you have to do something because it has a far greater benefit.

I'm not about to use CFLs anywhere I spend any time. I'm not about
to replace all my fixtures either. A case of bulbs here, and a case
there...

funny you would say that to him. I was thinking about doing just that
(buying cases of bulbs, not keeping them with the eight tracks) My 8-tracks
are in a controlled environment due to the foam pressers and the plastic.
The bulbs will not need this specialized attention.

I remember no such thing. The hole in the ozone has been opening and
closing for centuries. And no refrigerant will EVER cool as well as R-12.

Recording radio shows is so last century.
First, see if the show is archived at the radio station's
web site or the network's web site. Many are.
2nd: See if there is a pod cast of the show. No, you don't
need an iPod to listen to podcasts.
If all else fails: use your computer to record the show.
Use Task Scheduler to kick off and audio recording program.
Of course you need to wire your radio into the Line In Jack
of your computer.

masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires
around the western United States.

warning but didn't see a need to act further on it.

The contents of the June 25 memo from the FBI's Denver office were
reported Friday by The Arizona Republic. Davis declined to share a
copy of the memo and an FBI spokeswoman in Denver didn't immediately
return a telephone call.

The Republic reported that the detainee, who was not identified, said
the plan involved three or four people setting wildfires using timed
devices in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming that would detonate in
forests and grasslands after the operatives had left the country.

The memo noted that investigators couldn't determine whether the
detainee was telling the truth.

The newspaper said many forest law enforcement officers it contacted

Depends on the house, climate, sun load, and a bunch of other factors.
Dry climate - swamp cooler
Semi-dry climate- surround outside AC coil with a filtering material
that you keep saturated with water. The moistened air is cooler, and
since the coil doesn't care about humidity, it can lower the head
pressure and costs a little.
heavy sun - plantings, white paint
otherwise cool climate - cold well water and radiator (works only
so-so, but helps a little)
All areas - insulation.

outdoors? I haven't camped since the boy scouts, but would like to

Makes more sense to keep the food in the car.

Varys with the tent. With mine, you just lay it out flat on the
ground, put a peg at each corner, go inside with the pole, put
that up in the center. You can do that even in a howling gale.

In some national parks like Yosemite you can be fined for leaving
food in your car. What is not taken with you is to be put in bear proof
receptacles.

But the engine power gain is real. During WWII German fighter plane
engines had a MW50 boost. MW50 = a 50 percent mix of methanol and
water. The methanol acted as an antifreeze in cold high altitudes
where the planes flew. The extra power boost is from the steam
generated when water is sprayed into the hot engine. It probably
shortens engine life. But a fighter service plane's life is pretty
short anyway and a power boost at a critical time helps it stay alive
to fight another day. Water injection was used in early airliners
(Boeing 707s) and bombers (B-47s and B-52s) where water was injected
into the hot exhausts and produced a very impressive roar and long
white vapor trail on takeoffs.

Theoretically injecting water into a car engine sounds beneficial as
the steam would provide a boost as well as remove some of the heat.
But its something I am not willing to risk. Engine wear? What about
corrosion in the exhaust elements?

When I bought my house in the SFBay area 7 years ago, there wasn't a
specific line item on the settlement sheet called "escrow fee". The
biggest charges were the lenders and homeowners title insurance. The
lenders title insurance I paid and came out to .0015 or .15% of the amount
borrowed. The other policy was homeowners title insurance which defends
the title to the full market value of the house. The seller paid this,
which came out to .0035 or .35% of the total sale price.

Old Republic title insurance company handled the escrow. The title
insurance fees covered the escrow as there just wasn't a specific charge to
handle escrow. All the money flowed to them. They were the ones to make
sure the title was free of all liens, old loans paid off, and taxes were
paid. Only when everything was paid up and the deed was signed over did
the seller receive what remained in the escrow account, which wasn't much
after each agent (I had my own buyers agent) take their 3% cut.
