Hi
Personally I think the protection plan is a waste of time especially
with electronics, If there is a problem its usually at the beginning
of the items life. Companies know this and thats why they offer these
plans, its easy money for them and very profitable, its all in the
stats
Plus usually this cover is not for accidental damage which is really
what is most likely to cause repairs.
Sales Person "Oh sorry we don't cover accidental damage or wear and
tear it clearly stated in the policy" etc
I would spend the money on buying a bigger memory card.

I was one of the major naysayers on the idea of buying the van. It sounds
like it worked out very well for you. I'm glad you had a good trip.

If I might summarize...
$730 Van, Seat and license.
$ 70 Putting the brakes back together that hadn't been installed right.
$ 60 Towed and fixed sticking accelerator and loose emergency brake.
$270 New battery and replace bald front tires.
$ 10 Grease so it'll shift into first gear.
A $500 van that wound up costing $1140 and that only had to be towed
once and repaired four times with the minor risks of bad brakes, bald
tires and a sticking accelerator.
I wonder if you would be quite so happy if those bald tires, improperly
installed brakes or sticking accelerator had caused you to crash. How
large would the injuries to you or your loved ones have to be to wipe
out the satisfaction of saving a couple of thousand dollars?
Do you even count the value of your vacation time spent messing around
with this vehicle? Say you work 50 weeks a year for 2 weeks vacation.
You would have to work nearly a month for every day of vacation.
In short, you took a risk and feel you came out ahead. This isn't so
much frugality as gambling. It could just as easily have gone the other
way.

Really depends on how you define a necessity.
There's really only a few which are real necessitys in the strictest
sense, just food and water really. Even clothes and houses arent
really a necessity in the sense that you wont die without them.
Gets harder if you define necessitys as stuff you
choose to not be without unless you are destitute etc.

Virtually everything, particularly the house I designed and built myself,
the bulk of my clothes, my car, I choose to buy a new one every 30 years
or so, rather than buy old bombs whenever the previous one dies, and
I can certainly do without a car at all and have one for the convenience
even tho I cant ride a bike anymore. The flying was certainly not a
necessity, I did it for the enjoyment etc. The internet certainly isnt
a necessity, its what I find convenient. TV etc too. Books to read
in spades. Beer isnt a necessity, tap water keeps me alive fine.
All holidays/trips etc.

I do quite a bit of DIY projects and repairs. I would not want to be
without my cordless screwdriver/drill or my Sawzall. Certainly, I can
(and have) done projects without them, but they make it so much faster
and easier. I'm also beginning to think the same of my air nailer.

Come to think of it, that is how I do all the non formal learning.
And I did it with the formal learning with the flying too.
And its normally for a lot more than 3-4 hours a day too.
I generally dont bother with formal learning anymore tho, never bothered with
it with any of the computing, house building, car maintenance, etc etc etc.

It's not a sudden change.
Almost 30 years ago, I was in the military, stationed far from home (but
within the US). A number of us were invited to a home for Thanksgiving

cool the building, and especially curious how to make it automatic.

Besides that, it wastes water,and makes the ground around the place a soggy
mess.
Now if you REALLY want to cool the house, mount solar panels about 4 inches
above the roof, covering the entire roof with shade. The 4 " gap allows air
to
flow between the panels, cooling them and the roof.
Use the power generated by the panels to run the power meter backwards. The
money saved by this can be spent on running the A/C when you really need it.
Cover the windows with "Solarscreens". They are perforated metal covers that
you can see thru, but reflect a lot of the energy so it doesnt heat the
windows more
than the outside airtemp.
There are MANY good ideas, the water trick is not one of them....

Completely trivial to do that. The usual thermostat switches
a solenoid valve and that controls the water to the sprinkler.
You can do it with what you can buy in any decent store.

Mindlessly silly. The reality with roofs is that they get a lot
hot due to the heat absorbed and the water does get rid
of most of that heat even if the humidity is quite high.

Lot cheaper to have appropriate eaves to stop the sun falling on the windows in summer.

Used motor oil is seriously carcinogenic. I wouldn't want to
have any more contact than it takes to change it in a car. And

The cleaners shrank a lamb's wool sweater. Is there anyway to relax
the fibers or to stretch it back out 1 inch all the way around. Oddly
enough, it shrank more side to side than top to bottom, which is
unusual for wool knits. I felt (on purpose) a lot and they usually
shrink more vertically than horizaontally.
Help this has a faux fur lined hood that didn't seem to shrink and I
am afraid to try the vinegar thing, epseically in really hot water as
that will strip the remaining lanolin from the wool.
ANY ONE ELSE HAVE AN IDEA? I AM FRANTIC!
