OK, assume a far away land --a Banana Republic if you will-- where the
cyclists are victims of discrimination and injustice, and all of a
sudden they come to power... and voila, VELORUTION!

Like the article bellow says, not all vehicles are equal... The smaller,
the more protection they need; the bigger, the more responsibility. On
urban multi-lane roads, the right lane has a set speed of 20mph,
monitored by speed cameras. Bikes ride the lane. Do they get tickets
for running red lights? Nah, they hurt no one but themselves.

WHAT WOULD THE ROAD BE LIKE FOR CYCLISTS?

This article describes how cyclists are at the bottom of the food
chain, even in a place known for traffic safety. Which means there
needs to be a worldwide change for cyclists' rights...

that cyclists should not have equal rights as automobiles, but
actually MORE rights.

Velorution in the mind The Financial Times has a worthy but dull
article on the resurgence of urban cycling in the UK, with a focus on
London. It cannot escape from the cliche' of the number of people
riding through red lights; it is like if every article about digital
photography mentioned people taking illegal pictures at museums. Of
course figures of injuries caused by riding through red lights are
never offered.

The torpor in the journalist's mind is evident in the last few
paragraphs:

There's no doubt that car drivers need to clean up their act. Taking
speed limits down to 20mph in built-up areas will make the roads safer
for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike. Enforcing the ban on
mobile phone use will help drivers become more attentive. And applying
the Highway Code more strictly will make many people think twice about
engaging in the current bully-boy hierarchy of bigger is better.

Now, saying that motor vehicles should have the same rights as
pedestrians or cyclists is like saying that water skiers should be
allowed on all waters in front of a popular beach. The Highway Code by
instigating this non-sensical equality status, that inevitably leads
to the law of the jungle, is bunk. It has the same moral standing as
the South African Pbutt Law.

It is not abiding to rules that we should exhort, but consideration to
all other people and especially to those who are more vulnerable than
ourselves. Yes there are definitely inconsiderate bicycle riders in
London, and it is absolutely no excuse to say, 'It is a jungle out
there, I need to defend my self'. We need to raise the level of social
responsibility, starting by ourselves. The roads are a commons to be
enjoyed by everyone, starting by people on foot. Then the greater or
more dangerous the vehicle one chooses to use, the fewer rights one
has and the more consideration one needs to give to more vulnerable
people.

Sounds like you're pigeon-holing your choices there, Jeff. You're
just as likely to get a car with parts that could break @ $1000 as you
could @ $5000. Except now you're out $4000 more AND have to fix it.

As for new car dealers having the best used cars...dunno about that.
When I traded in my 93 Festiva (they gave me $100 for it) they turned
around and advertised it for $1999. But if you can find the "original
owner" who has all the maintenance records, you can see 1. where it
lives 2. who the driver was.

Right now I do have 2 vehicles, my 87 Nissan p/up I paid $1100 for
from a person who works for the same company as me...I use it as my
"weekend warrior" truck. And the 07 Yaris which is my daily driver.

Just did the same cost figures for a "spare" cheap 8 year
old car we used when one of the other two was down for
repairs. All said, we can rent a nice car for six weeks
each year for what we saved. One less car to park, and no
relatives/ friends asking to borrow it ;-)

I have already posted general advice. Now some success stories:

A few months ago I was taking a business trip that involved an
overnight stay along the way. I found two college girls who agreed to
share gas but said they would get their own room. I knew that my hotel
was $100 and up for the night .
One was 19 the other 20. As luck had it there were no extra rooms at
my place and after we drove by some dumps they decided they would sleep
on the floor.After checking in 19 decided to share my bed and after 20
was asleep she jacked me off twice.

At arraignment court a woman had been arrested for driving on a
suspended license. She needed $150 and a licensed driver to bail out her
car. I told her I would not have the money until the next day. We had a
24 hour orgy. When I retrieved her car she thanked me by following me
home and spending the night.

Hanging out near a welfare office I met a lady who was told to return
the next day for a housing voucher. I took her out for lunch,invited her
to my place and had an all nigher for $25,

Not good enough. I'd like to see each merchant's code on the monthly
bill. In theory on one card I get 3% on the three categories in which I
spend the most money. No matter HOW they code them I should get more
than ZERO extra points, right? I called. The phonedroid said there was
an error and I would be credited. Now I just have to remember to check
next month to see if I got credit for last month. Then I'll have to
check the following month to see if I got credit...

I figure they can't actually lie, but they sure can obfuscate. And make
errors that don't get corrected unless somebody calls.

I've had two friends ask about reducing gas costs within a few days of
each other. Oddly both are driving Chevy C1500's with V8s.

At 14 mpg, I can see why they complain! Both need to do a substantial
amount of driving each day. One commutes 80 miles, and both need
occasional usage of a truck.

So that brings up some interesting options.

Resale value on large used trucks has plummeted, people wanting gas
guzzlers want new gas guzzlers.

1) Sell the truck at a big loss and buy a smaller used truck.

2) Keep the truck and buy a small used car.

3) Keep driving the truck.

At the mileage they are driving and gas at $3.50 a gallon, that's
nearly $6,000 year. A small car that gets 28mpg, could save about
$2,500, assuming some truck driving, out of that you'd have to pay
second vehicle insurance cost et all and buy the second vehicle. It
looks like two vehicles may be cheaper in the long run and a single
smaller truck is cheaper in the short run. Doing nothing is cheaper in
the shortest run, but that would be in the one year range.

Who has any recommendations on vehicle choices?

From what I've seen, spending a $1000 on a used car usually buys
trouble. Spending $5000 seems to buy a good vehicle. There must be a
sweet spot or a sweet vehicle out there, or perhaps you just need to
find a good deal around $2500 or so... Last time I went looking (2 years
ago), the new car dealers had the best used cars. A glut of trade ins I
guess.

Myself, I'm able to keep a heap running forever, but that is not for
most people!

Don't forget to factor in the insurance on a second vehicle. It's bizarre
that if you have two vehicles you need separate policies, since you can only
drive one at a time, but that's the way it is. I don't understand why they
insure the car instead of the driver.

You forgot the best and most obvious solution. Trade the truck in for a small car, then rent a truck the one or two days a year that you definitely "need" a truck. You will save thousands of dollars a year, and the rental fees will be nothing compared to that. So you will keep virtually all of the money you save. If the trucks are worth enough, you might even be able to do an even trade, truck for small car, no money involved other than registration fees. Oh! And you should get a REFUND from your insurance company also, as you've already paid for insurance on the truck, and the insurance on a car will be much cheaper. -Dave

Hi Jeff,

I don't have any specific advice for your friends, but I can tell you
that crude oil is now trading in excess of $116.00 a barrel and that
the DOE is forecasting $4.00 a gallon gasoline in many parts of the
U.S. in the coming weeks (see link below). If your friends are
spending some $6,000.00 a year at $3.50 a gallon, that number could
very well approach $7,000.00/year (and possibly more) as we head into
the peak driving season.

You didn't mention the age of these vehicles, but it's unlikely their
resale value will rebound going forward; if anything, as other vehicle
owners try to off-load their gas guzzling trucks and SUVs and as the
U.S. economy continues to weaken, I would expect their residual values
to decline at an even more precipitious rate. Whether it's better to
sell now or later I'll let someone else advise; I guess my question to
you is: "can they realistically afford to spend $6,000.00 or $7,000.00
a year filling their gas tanks?".

Yep, some need reliable transport. Others whose job is more flexible or who work at home dont.

Whats the best thing to do depends on the circumstances which you didnt spell
out properly. Particularly how flexible they are on car reliability and how much
they really need a truck. And plenty choose to spend a few $K more than they
absolutely have to for the convenience of better reliability too, even if they cant
really spell out that that is what they are actually doing.

My Honda CR-V (which gets pretty decent mileage) has come in pretty handy
for some of the types of hauling people use a truck for. Naturally, I'm not
going to load it up with a bunch of fill dirt or something like that, but it
can definitely transport lots of items a conventional sedan can't.

And a trailer can do most of what a truck can do, and doesnt
affect the mileage you get when using the car without the trailer.

Check the longevity of the chemical closely. This is the key.

I use Orkin here. The terminex stuff lasts at best a year and the franchise
in my local area is not reliable. (This is not a total slam on terminex as
i gather in some areas they are quite good and even in our area they are
better than Orkin with some types of pests, just not termites).

I have had several 'treatments' done in the past 10 years. One was by
terminex only 4 years ago and came back to the USA to find live termites
eating out a baseboard. I got the orkin contract and am covered for all
damage now after an extensive inspection to determine how much damage we
already had (thank the lord, just the basebord!). Yes, it costs money but
we are paying off treatment for an active infestation. Once that drops off,

Turns out they're not, apparently ... A (very quick) google turned up
this fwiw...I presume it's reasonably accurate, but I'd surely want to
do some more followup.

It does seem to indicate Terminix isn't using Dow Sentricon, though...

Terminix nationally doesn't exactly have a great track record in terms of
running an honest business. Plenty of people have had their houses munched
by termites when the mixture of powdered milk and water Terminix used to
spray around their houses didn't turn out to be all that effective <g>.
Check with your state's attorney general office or department of agriculture
before you do business with them.
