TM is a poor crazy bastard who just posts on his one favorite subject -
hatred of motor vehicles because they interfere with his use of the roads.
His other favorite subject is attacking Christianity. If you respond to this
poor crazy bastard, then you are a poor crazy bastard too.

He likes to reference monkeys and other wild animals normally found only in
zoos because he is most likely a wild beast himself. I think he fornicates
with monkeys, but I can't prove it.

TM should confine himself to just one thread instead of proliferating them
like a poor crazy bastard. He is insane of course. I liken him to the
village idiot of olden times. The difference these days is that no one any
longer recognizes the village idiot because idiocy has become so widespread.

But I will be here to remind one and all of what a poor crazy bastard TM is.
It is mark of My Greatness that I can still recognize the village idiot even
if the rest of you can't.

Regards,

Ed Dolan the Great - Minnesota
aka
Saint Edward the Great - Order of the Perpetual Sorrows - Minnesota

All those who claim "superiority" are under question even if it is a
former president...

'Carter made news for remarks during an interview with Brian Williams
that aired Monday on the "NBC Nightly News." Carter told Williams that
the humanitarian work he's performed through his foundation means that
his post-presidency career has been "superior" to that of other former
presidents.'

True superiority comes from humbleness --something like me. ;)

Thinking about buying an older second hand car I was looking through an old
'Which car guide 2005/2006' and got to wondering why under the heading of
*driving experience* cars with a diesel engine is always getting a higher
rating than the petrol model. (ie a red star as opposed to a circle rating)

I contacted Which quite some time and asked them, but never got a response.

Having never owned a diesel car I dont really know what they are like to
drive. I know people used to say that the 'power to revolution' curve was
different to a petrol engine and if you were used to driving a petrol
engine, it would take time to get used to the diesel. But it would never be
quite so satisfying to drive as the petrol engine. I guess things probably
have changed by now.

Since though 2005/2006 is not that long ago, is Which saying that diesel
engines are nicer to drive than petrol? (a better driving experience)
because they are getting a higher rating in this category than petrol
engines? Thanks for any advice.

Go and drive a couple of cars, identical apart from fuel type, and see
which YOU prefer.

In very simple terms -

diesel - lots of torque low down the rev range, no need to rev it hard to
make fast progress. Quite a thin powerband in most modern TDs I've driven.

Petrol, - gutless low down, plenty of power up high in the rev range.

My personal preference is for a petrol turbo engine, and damn the
economy :-)

Petrol is better for clean starts. Diesel (or any turbo) much better between
30-80.

Consider my last car, petrol of 85bhp/t. It was geared for 36mph in first,
with 30mph a comfortable maximum. In second, it had about 60bhp at 30mph and
maxed out at a noisy 60mph. 50-70 times were about 8, 11, 17
seconds in the three top gears.

Now diesel, also 85bhp/t. In 1st gear 24mph is possible, 20mph being a
comfortable maximum. That's the bit that takes getting used to. But in 3rd
gear at 30mph it has 70bhp, maximum power comes at a civilised 60mph and
if required can continue to 75mph. Thus 3rd is quicker and has
more top & bottom range than the old 2nd gear. It gets even better looking
at the
50-70 times: about 6, 7 and 10 seconds. Quite simply, motorway inclines no
longer exist and when a blocker moves out of the way I can now get air
between me and the tailgater.

If you learnt to drive in 1956 then the diesel still generates usable
torque at the same engine revs. Realising that changing up at 1400RPM in a
VTEC isn't helpful seems to elude some people.

Here in the states diesels aren't that common for passenger cars, there
are a few, but 95% are gasoline (petrol) powered. I did get a chance to
drive a neighbors cars back to back, They were both VW Jettas one with a
2.8L petrol V6 and the other was a 1.9L TDI. I thought the petrol VR6
was far better. The TDI had good initial thrust, but it's power quickly
diminished after about 2500 RPM. In the interest of disclosure, my daily
driver has supercharged 4.6L V8 (petrol) under the hood, so my
expectations may have be too optimistic. If you like to drive in
sporting manner then I think petrol is the way to do. Diesels will
obviously return better fuel economy.

TM, don't worry about it, the fact that I survived was a fluke. The

Therefore I have some people to bother yet, to poke and prod into

So long as you keep that diary of yours, people will learn from you. I
call it the JUNGLE so they know the law most prevalent out there.

Yes, but all that manure still breeds flies that spread disease.
Believe it or not the motor vehicle really did wonders for cleaning up
our cities. Were we to go back to that we would need an army of people
with brooms, shovels, and barrels to keep the poop under control,
which would be good for unemployment I guess. How to pay for that army
would be a problem, maybe horse licenses? Selling the byproduct as
fertilizer? Whatever, we can't go back to draft animals without paying
a price in either actual money or public health.

Had we a crystal ball when planning things back in the immediate post-
WWII era we would have built railroads to carry goods and people on
the ground with the airlines taking care or the ones in a rush instead
of the massive Interstate Highway System. Seriously rails are much
cheaper to build per ton/mile of capacity than paved roads, and much
more durable to boot. Then we would only need short-range electric
vehicles for the distribution of goods from the train depot to the
stores nearby rather than the long-haul trucks that go from production
point or port of entry to retail point. The numbers of vehicles would
be the same, but their makeup would be different and more efficient
and less polluting. Move people locally by their own muscles, walking
or riding a bicycle, and long distances by rail or air or bicycle if
time is not a concern. The road network needed to move goods from farm
to market would be plenty for getting bicycles from city to city.
Rural electrification could have been used to charge electric trucks
for moving the produce on local roads. Cowboys would still need to
ride horses, but tractors would be electric powered. Barns would be
placed on east-west lines with roofs that were all south-facing in the
northern hemisphere to gather solar energy, either for use on the farm
or to sell to the grid.

But you know what they say about hindsight.

Your balance sounds right on, but I hear GM had a hand in the
"planning" of the car culture and highway system, and the dismissal of
the "obsolete" technologies (read COMPETITION).

Then we are left with the most POLLUTING & PROFITABLE transportation
system in the world, in which GM is only a small player of the game.

Now the MONSTER has a life of its own, and nobody knows how to stop it
or even put it on a diet.

An except from:

http://sfnap.org/n_area/parks/na_gol_o.html

"Golden Gate Park once was part of one of the largest inland-reaching
sand dune systems along the western shore of North America. It
stretched seven miles from Ocean Beach across the entire peninsula to
the present-day Financial District. The western areas near the ocean
were covered with constantly drifting sand. Toward the eastern end,
rock outcrops and ridges provided a protected environment in which oak
trees thrived. Despite their rich biological diversity and stark
beauty, the dunes did not meet the European aesthetic for park land.
In 1870, William Hammond Hall submitted a plan to Mayor Frank McCoppin
to tame the sand dunes and "fit a graceful curvature" to the natural
topography. Using horse manure, the park designers transformed the
ever-shifting sand into stabilized, arable soil."

A lot of shit (sorry, manure) must have been happening in the 19th
century, even before we could account for it in the 20th century. And
it doesn't look better in the 21st century.

California Suffers from Greatest Whooping Cough Outbreak Since 1955

People residing in the state of California might be a worried lot
these days as they are facing an ever-rising numbers of people
suffering from whooping cough. According to the information available,
the infection rate for the highly communicable lung infection has
reached its highest, ever since the year 1955.

The deadly disease, whose name comes from the sound of the cough, has
already claimed the lives of nine babies out of which eight have been
reported to be Hispanic. The other name for this lung disease is also
known as pertussis.<more on site>

Whooping Cough vs Pesticide Programs. California Counties 2010 by Jim West
http://harpub.co.cc/whoop/

All zero incidence counties have no mandated pesticide spray programs for
moths, etc. Therefore three redefinitions can be postulated: 1) Pertussis
is a seasonal pesticide disease, although it possibly could occur (even
off-season) due to indoor air pollution (stove exhaust, etc), or other
sources. 2) Pertussis is not germ caused. 3)The pertussis paradigm is
misinfo to generally confuse pesticide and other pollution diagnostics and
to exploit the resulting confusion and disorders. Pertussis is a
respiratory disease and its symptoms are the body's attempts to avoid
breathing polluted air, and the body's attempts to alert the community.

Self-aggrandizing jerk that you are, you have the never to refer to

Please be wary of reviews that are from "THE VINE". Apparently,
sometimes a manufacturer distributes free products to certain
Amazon reviewers for their review. I have a feeling that Amazon
awards those free products to reviewers who consistently rate
products highly (that could be determined with some research).

Following (see the link below) is an example of problematic
reviews on Amazon caused by "THE VINE"program. The first/oldest
page of reviews is very negative. Then, apparently Amazon and the
manufacturer gave some free samples of the product to "THE VINE"
users, and the average review score went way up. An extremely high
percentage of those "THE VINE" reviews include the exact wording
"not just for babies" in their review title. You can guess that is
because, thanks to the free sample, they had no real need for the
product.

For all those items, when they are near empty, I simply store the bottle
upside down and let gravity do what gravity does best.

Unfortunately, for some that doesn't work. For example, the pour
spout on "Tide" liquid is a separate component that protrudes far
enough inside the bottle to prevent the last small quantity of liquid
to pour out.

The Anglophone image of the world is transmitted to the world via
Hollywood and then translated into many languages. The UK seems to be
the rara avis here where they seem to enjoy their own shows. ;)

Well, maybe Bollywood is important to India. ;)

Opus, your incident touched me a lot, and sometimes I have similar
nightmares. I was spit in my face by an angry driver but that doesn't
compare. I'm not afraid to die though. I'm afraid to be broken up and
then abandoned. To be honest, despite my wisdom, I have a hard time
forgiving or forgetting. That TERRORIST that left you bleeding... I'd
unleash the mighty power we use in Afghanistan to hunt him down. A
drone would be perfect.

Hit-and-runs are a common occurrence here too, almost every cyclist
can account for one, and nobody makes an issue out of it. He --and his
kind-- get my banana for the time being...

Many people must be wondering where I get my wisdom from... Well, I
get it from the source, the animals that reveal our worst and best
instincts. In this case, I got good news for you.

Most animals can be tamed and made happy. They don't worry about death
or hell, they just enjoy the day. They fear no God, but fear the
bigger animals. Well, I fear a Christian behind the wheel of an SUV,
which proves they can be affected by animal instincts too and want to
be bigger than the others.

I wonder why people haven't tapped into the source before. Of course,
Aesop did but his messages are often forgotten in order to learn
twisted metaphors from the Bible.

Here's some wisdom of his...

A crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet partaken in anxiety.
Aesop

A doubtful friend is worse than a certain enemy. Let a man be one
thing or the other, and we then know how to meet him.
Aesop

A liar will not be believed, even when he speaks the truth.
Aesop

Adventure is worthwhile.
Aesop

Affairs are easier of entrance than of exit; and it is but common
prudence to see our way out before we venture in.
Aesop

After all is said and done, more is said than done.
Aesop

Any excuse will serve a tyrant.
Aesop

Appearances are often deceiving.

Yep McNamara is definitely a Polish name ... NOT! truth be told, I am
Irish, English and Polish, but this is little to do about nothing?
There is no significant correlation between ethnicity and
intelligence. Intelligence is not ethnically linked, but I would
expect nothing less preposterous from the Minnesota loon. I wonder
when Dolan is going to do something about his mental illness.

I suspect McNamara was not your father. Some dumb Pole got to your mother
while he was not looking. In short, you are a bastard and a son of a bitch.

Have you ever noticed that some people function in a world where they
feel that for them to do well, someone has to do poorly?
It's like they haven't noticed that there is plenty. Plenty for
everyone. Esp. if you share what you do have, it comes back to you. And
you realize "Greed" is not necessary.
Enjoy the moment! It's special.
It's NOW.

I suspect you notice this because you continually look for someone to
share with you.

Yes. Like with playing the game of pool in a bar. Some people devote a LOT
of energy trying to distract their opponent and make their opponent play
bad.

Whereas other players use their energy to practice and learn about the game.

Of course the "cheaters" do not consider that those who spend their time
learning can also learn to ignore distractions. So cheating does not get
them very far...

A few years ago I was living in a home where the air handler was up in
the attic. I neglected to ever maintain the air handler's drain pipe
so it eventually clogged up and started leaking water down through the
bathroom's exhaust fan.

That unfortunate experience taught me to check, clean, and flush out
the pipe at least once a year. I took pictures of the process this
time and created a quick guide.

Here's the gallery page - http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/HVAC-Condensate-Drain-Pipe-Cleaning-Guide

A wet/dry vacuum makes the procedure easier, but just flushing out the
pipe with water is usually enough to keep the pipe relatively clear.

Cheers,

Cars fart poisonous gas.

That's a powerful metaphor, huh?

It is mark of My Greatness that I can still recognize the village idiot even
if the rest of you can't.

a cheap Volt-Meter can accurately measure the real voltage of various
small batteries you use around the house.
Like the other day , The remote wouldn't work and out of four batteries
in it. Only one was low. I replaced just the one and saved $$$
Mostly we use rechargeable ones. Tho.
they cost less in the not too long run.

In some situations like a remote, the rechargeable battery can cost
more to operate. The shelf life on an alkaline battery is years. The
shelf life on the CHARGE of a rechargeable can be as little as 30
days. The draw on the remote is negligible so a set can last for
years. Meanwhile, you may end up changing and charging those nicads
dozens of times plus the inconvenience involved. A good alkaline is
4/$1 at Dollar Tree. I save rechargeables for high intensity
situations like cameras and power equipment.

Yes, a VOM can help diagnose and save money. Even so, common sense is
way better. Using both is priceless.
