Soon after I reached a platinum level at Choice hotels, I arrived fairly
late at a Comfort Inn in Stephenson, VA only to find my reserved King
NS room was not available. I had been downgraded into a two double bed
smoker, I walked next door and was able to pick up a room at the HI
Express. While the Comfort did allow me to cancel that room at 10:00
pm, when I wrote to the headquarters, I simply received a note stating
the were sorry, but sometimes the reserved rooms are not always available.

I'm now a platinum member of HI. That little event has has cost Choice
many stays over the past few years. Not that they likely care or even
notice, but they have definitely lost significant business due to their
service. Platinum stays at HI often results in an upgrade vs. a down
grade at Choice.

We stayed at a HI Express in Cleveland not too long ago. The room was dirty,
the tub took 2 hours to fill etc. We received no refund partial or
otherwise after complaining. They won't get our business again.

A few times I have arrived at a Holiday Inn in the morning to be told
no rooms were ready. Showing the card sometimes makes them available
immediately of within 30 minutes. Once I was told it would be 20-30
minutes and the desk clerk gave me a coupon for breakfast.

You can always dispute the credit card charge. At the very least
they have to address your complaints.

Stayed at the Econolodge in Holland MI last weekend. I was traveling
by myself and was booked into a two double bed room. I went out the
following morning and returned at 11 PM. My room was never serviced.
I called the front desk with complaints and they told me that since I
was a "single" I only would get room service every OTHER day. Never
heard of such a practice.

To take away from the HOTEL thread for a post...

I've had nothing but good cars and great service from GM. I've owned 4 GM
vehicles. A 2001 Saturn Sl1, A 1996 Pontiac Sunfire, a 1993 Chevy Cavalier
and an 1989 Pontiac Tempest.

In each case I have purchase from a GM dealer (3 year old used although the
Sunfire might have been only 2 years old). I don't recall any of these
dealers putting in ticky-tack fees on my invoice.

Maybe I'm lucky.

I found the three different Goodwrench locations I dealt with over the last
15 years friendly fair and honest. I've never had a complaint to make about
GMAC. They took payments when they said they would, held their end of the
financing, never complained when I paid my financing off early, and in every
single case GMAC informed my insurance provider that I had indeed paid off
my loans. I buy them used at around 60 K km and sell around 190 K km. I
drive about 40 000 km every year. I usually only buy a 3 year old car.

The only major repairs were the abs computer and master cylinder (separate
occasions on the 93 Cavalier) and the transmission on the 96 Sunfire however
that may be due to my reckless driving on that vehicle, forgetting that it
was indeed a used vehicle. The tempest had flaking paint but what American
car didn't in the late 80's early 90's. The Macpherson struts were giving
out on the 93 caviler coupe at 197 K km but I sold that car for $1200 to a
father for his college son. Seems to me I had issues with the dashboard
lights on the Saturn burning out one at a time but it was more annoance than
anything else.

I presently drive a 2004 Sebring Limited. I have had this car for 6 months
now. I've already replaced the sway bar on this vehicle but this is an
issue with Chryslers. It's powerplant is more reliable than a GM and more
peppy and the sound system better than GM's. However It's not as nice to
steer or brake as a GM and it lacks features that the Malibu v6 LTZ would
have such as 6-way power seats, heated mirrors and heated seats and climate
control which all come on the Malibu.

At the time I was paying cash for the car so I took this Sebring cause it
was the last 2004 Sebring ont he lot at a high volume Chrysler dealer. I
had priced out 6 Malibu's over a 3 month period previous to the Sebring and
the Sebring saved me 1500 bucks. The chyrlser dealer gave me a very hard
time for buying a car for cash and the sales manager would not negotiate
with me for the first 45 minutes because I stated that I would pay cash (in
this case a certified cheque from my bank) instead of finance. This is the
first time I have purchased a car for cash and not finance. Maybe this is
standard practise. I was prepared to purchase a 2007 Honda Civic for cash
but did not get my price, althought they gave me no hard time about paying
cash. I was sick of small little cars so I didn't buy the civic.

I will miss GM service and drivability for the next 160 000 KM of driving.

A few years ago I stayed at a smaller motel for a week. On the third
day, the maid never showed up. No big deal, but I mentioned it at
checkout, when they asked me if everything had been satisfactory.
Didn't ask for any adjustment, but they credited the entire week's
charges and gave me a bill showing zero balance. I actually felt bad,
told them I'd be happy to pay for my stay, but they refused to take
anything.

I'm surprised they changed sheets at Econolodge.

Then again, you did only expect them to make the bed.

I love any of the Hilton chain hotels and have never had a problem with
them. My first budget choice is Embassy Suites (love the free breakfasts
AND Happy Hours!) and next comes Hampton Inn. If I'm feeling
particularly flush and get a good deal, the Hilton Hotel is my next pick.

I'm addicted to their beds and pillows. And I've never stayed at a quieter
hotel. Couldn't even hear doors slamming up and down the hall that I
usually hear.

You jogged my memory. I once stayed at an Econolodge and the toilet
was clogged. They said it could not be fixed so I insisted on another
room. They refused even though it was far from full. Only a threat to
call the local Department of Health convinced them to give me a
different room.

I hate, hate, HATE Embassy Suites on weekends. Kids running endlessly up
and down the halls screeching all night long. A maid told us it had become
popular to hold birthday/slumber parties as ES.

I've become addicted to Hampton Inns. They are the quietest hotels I've
stayed in.

Guess they've improved since I stopped staying at Hamptons - perhaps 10
years ago. Back then, I found them to be almost as noisy as Fairfield
Inns.

I find the newer HI Express locations (not the remodeled HI's) and
Courtyard to be my sweet spot for value / quietness & comfortable beds.

Marriott, Crowne Plaza, Embassy Suites, etc are arguably better, but
IMO, not worth their typical premium price.

Choice Hotels are so erratic, it's hard to make any blanket statement,
other than typically being the lowest cost hotel I now occasionally
consider. Some are quiet / comfortable & clean, but many are simply
dirty, run down and dumpy.

I avoid Econolodges like the plague. One particularly bad one was in
Cockeysville, MD. First I was assigned to a room where the bed was
missing and renovations were in progress (the front desk didn't KNOW
that?), then shown to a room where the shower on the 2nd floor leaked
down onto my toilet, and the a/c was a good substitute for a
jackhammer. I wrote to hdqtrs. to the effect that they should be
ashamed to have this establishment on their list - not a peep, as to
be expected. They are almost as bad as Knight's Inns.

I seek out Marriotts and newer Best Westerns. By the way, is there a
chain which isn't a franchise deal? I like Hilton Garden Inns too, but
they don't seem to be too great in number. HI Express - seem to cover
whole spectrum from bad to superb.

On the budget end I believe Motel 6 owns all their properties.
Sometimes you will find two nearby hotels that are pars of different
chains say, a Marriott and a Holiday Inn that have the same owner.

They have improved. I was stunned. Like you, I stopped using Hampton years
ago. I was at a conference and that was the hotel. I was apprehensive. It
was great. I've been staying at Hampton ever since.

But I should maybe give HI Express a try. Quiet is most important to me.

After a recent stay at the Hampton Inn near the Orange County Convention
Center in Orlando, I am a fan too. For the money, its hard to beat
Hampton Inn for what you get.

500 Million Customers A Multi-Billion Dollar Market

Currently there are around 60 million domain names registered
globally. Industry experts are predicting that in the next ten years,
more than 500 MILLION domain names and web sites will be active
annually.

Imagine if YOU could get a piece of this multi-billion dollar per year
global market, which will include ongoing annual domain renewals AND
the web based services utilized with each domain name. Most of the
good .com domains are already taken, but the .ws "Web Site" domain
Registry (GDI) has an unbelievable amount of the very best names still
available, and only GDI offers the opportunity for YOU to benefit from
the enormous residual revenues being generated.

Even before launching the amazing "Income for Life"(tm) program in June
of 2004, GDI achieved a five (5) year track record of incredible
success and currently maintains customers with annual renewals and web
services in more than 180 countries. Now it's YOUR CHANCE to cash in
on the huge demand for domain names and web services worldwide.

Dunno about your house, but mine has insulation in the "ceiling". All
the roof does, is shade that insulation in summer, and keep the rain/
snow off, and the attic is vented to get any humidity out in winter,
and the hot air out in summer. Venting the attic space properly is the
reasonable way to go.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - When James Stuck regained consciousness in a
military hospital in late-2005, he realized something was wrong even
before he looked down at the stump where his lower right leg had been.

A day earlier, the Army infantryman, then 21, had been driving a
Humvee outside the northern Iraqi town of Kirkuk when it was hit by
three rounds of artillery buried under the road. The vehicle flipped,
knocking Stuck out and smashing his leg.

Much of the leg was quickly amputated, and Stuck wondered how he'd
carry on. The answer came from a U.S. Olympic Committee program that
has turned hundreds of disabled veterans into athletes.

This week, Stuck and three other Iraq war veterans are in Rio de
Janeiro as part of the U.S. delegation to the Parapan American Games,
which has drawn some 1,300 disabled athletes from around the
hemisphere to compete.

For Stuck and other Iraq war veterans, the thrill of athletics has
brought both physical and mental healing and given them something to
think about other than their often painful memories of the war.

Stuck is a member of the U.S. sitting volleyball team. He uses his
arms and torso to move around the court and hit the ball over the
nearly four-foot-high net. On Wednesday, the squad beat Canada . The
team plays Brazil Friday for their division title, then moves on to
the overall semifinals.

"Once I got into sports, I realized I could continue doing what I love
to do and that amputation is not the end of your life," said Stuck,
who lives in Edmond, Okla. , with other members of his team.

"It's like being reborn because you have to learn to do everything
again."

The Olympic committee's veterans program so far has helped about 400
people, including more than 200 who've fought in the current Iraq war,
said John Register , associate director of outreach and development
for the committee's Paralympic branch.

Some veteran athletes are seeking slots in next year's Paralympic
Games in Beijing , the biggest event in the disabled sporting world.

Register served in the 1990-91 Gulf War, but he lost his left leg in a
freak hurdling accident in 1994. He said getting into swimming and
track and field after the accident helped him carry on with his life.

"It's about accepting the injury and moving past that," he said.
"Sports doesn't allow a person to feel sorry for themselves,
especially when they're around other people in exactly the same
situation they're in."

Veterans have long used sports for rehabilitation. In fact, the
international disabled athletics movement was started by a group of
World War II veterans in the United Kingdom who organized the first
disabled games in 1948.

Veteran Scott Winkler , of Augusta, Ga. , said he discovered his
"hidden talent" as a shot putter and discus thrower after falling off
an ammunition truck in Tikrit, Iraq , in May 2003 and injuring his
spine so badly that he was paralyzed below the waist.

Back in the United States , he first took up fishing and won second
place in two disabled veterans tournaments. That led to wheelchair
basketball and then, after taking part in a 2006 event organized by
the U.S. Olympics Committee, track and field.

Winkler won the gold medal in the shot put Thursday and set a world
record in his injury-level category, throwing the 11-pound ball nearly
34 feet while strapped into a special throwing chair. Lightly built
before his injury, the 34-year-old now has hulking shoulders and
bulging forearms.

"It's given me an outlet in life, and everybody needs an outlet,"
Winkler said. "It's given me something to focus on and get better at."

It's also helped Winkler take his mind off memories of the war that
are still so painful that he was pushed to the verge of tears when
asked about them.

"You try to block things out, and it's hard," he said.

Hey guys and gals! I was wondering if anyone here knew that you could
actually make some serious cash taking pictures with your digital
camera? Yeah it may seem kind of new because not many people know
about this market yet. I have a blog that has more information what im
talking about. If you feel like checking it out, I would completely
suggest it.
http://paidforpics.blogspot.com/
But for now, heres the skinny. You basically get paid for taking
everyday normal shots of random things around you, upload, and you get
paid for the use of your images. Im really excited about this and I
feel like I need to share it with the rest of you all who may have a
load of images sitting on your drives.

>Do you even count the value of your vacation time spent >messing around
>with this vehicle?

Not really - most of that was up front, during the first 6 days of the
trip. We are talking about a 23 day vacation here, not just a shorter week
trip. I had already allowed for several days staying in hotels up front,
since I figured that there would be at least SOME things that would need
some work, while we were still close to civilization. I knew that once we
started driving in earnest, we would no longer be by the big cities, and
would be on our own a lot more. Better to get the glitches worked out, and
potential problems taken care of up front. Besides, it gave us an excuse to
stay in some nicer hotels while still in the USA (Washington), where the
hotels were available for half the prices they would have cost later in
Canada.

So, my wife and kids didn't mind at all, since it meant sleeping in more
comfortable hotel with pool those days, and getting better night's sleep. I
guess there's an upside to everything - even auto repair!

Last weekend we stayed one night at the Hampton Inn in Waterbury CT.

I couldn't get my company's corporate rate, but that was ok, since
the room was nice and had a comfortable king-size bed. Also the
complimentary continental breakfast was very good.

The 1st surprise came at 11PM when we discovered the low-flush
toilet didn't do its job. This was no big deal, since I took the cover off
the tank, figured out what was going on, and manually forced it to do
what had to be done.

The 2nd surprise came 12 hours later when we checked out.
I told the manager about the toilet, --not to complain, but just to
let her know that it wasn't working right and should be fixed.

I turned to leave, but then she said, "Wait! I'll make an adjustment".
It turns out that she took $110 off the bill!
We had stayed at the hotel for free!

I'm now an even bigger fan of Hampton Inns!

As long as you like filling Paris Hilton's pockets, I guess that's OK.

I much prefer the HI Express in Southington - same guarantee on the
room, better accommodations & never had any problems.

I don't concern myself tracking whether or not some airhead wastrel might
benefit from where I spend money.

The thing is, you don't really know how good they are, until you see how
they handle some problem that comes up.

In my case, they really didn't have to do anything to keep me happy.
But they went far beyond what I expected. I didn't expect to get anything.
I thought I was just being nice enough to tell them about a problem.

I support not funneling money in the direction of loser idiots, but I'm
thinking there is no need to worry about filling her pockets because they
are already full. If the hotel chain didn't make another cent after today,
I would guess that the family would still be doing just fine financially.

So, IMHO, that's one less thing to worry about in the world.

It'd be interesting to hear other stories about excellent customer service
from large national companies. Unfortunately, I don't have any of my own
right at the moment.

Yesterday my local fishwrap arrived missing its "Weekender" section, the one
that contains all the community and entertainment type news for
the....WEEKEND. When the replacement I requested by voicemail didn't arrive,
I called back and insisted on talking to an actual human. She offered me
either a credit for the paper or said she would send the section by mail.
It'd be really useful to have the information about the weekend on, say, the
following Tuesday.

A few years ago a booked a room at a Ramada at a very low rate on
priceline. I arrived after midnight and a couple was screaming at the
desk clerk about an upgrade to a suite. The clerk tried explain that her
plan did not guarantee an upgrade and she insisted she would have them
fired.
When my turn came I was asked what I wanted and said that for such a
low price a room with a bed would do. They gave me a suite.
More recently I stayed at a Vagabond Inn. Mo major problems but a
series of minor ones. The heat barely worked, the drain on the sink had
to done manually and there was a leak on the carpet under the sink. The
manager kept saying he would fix it but never did (it was 3 night stay)
I filled out the postage paid complaint form and a few weeks later
got a call telling me that they had deducted $75 from the credit card
bill and sending me a $50 unrestricted coupon valid at any of their
locations.

1) At a Holiday Inn in SC, I upon checkout, I commented that the shower
curtain should be changed in the room I had due to mildew.

As the OP described, I was merely making a suggestion, but the clerk
insisted on refunding full payment for that night's stay.

2) At a HI Inn Express in ME, I overheard the desk clerk refund a full
night's stay to someone because someone's dog was barking in their
adjoining room. Evidently someone left the dog unattended while they
went for a late dinner & it whined until they returned. The clerk
commented that they had tried to quiet the dog the night before, but
were unable to do anything until the owners returned. From what I
recall, I'm not sure pets were even allowed at that location.

3) After four years, a Levilor blind failed that I bought from JC Penny.
They replaced it with no charge.

4) Many years ago upon a sale at JC Pennys, we bought two pairs of
sneakers (clearance sale) for one of our sons - one to wear immediately
and one to grow into. About 6-9 months later, we discovered that the
second pair was mismatched (two different sizes). Upon return, the
store clerk located the mismatch in their stockroom & we had a matched
pair.

On the other hand I'll never do any business with Days Inn, Sheraton,
Radison, GM, Firestone/Bridgestone, Bestbuy or Uniroyal due to
exceptionally POOR service.

Learn to buy and store the right amount of food. If I know I won't
finish something before it goes bad, I will place it in the freezer
ASAP. One example is hamburger buns, and it would work for hot dog
buns as well. When you get home put the bloody bag in the freezer
(along with the wieners), then just take them out as you need them. If
it's something that doesn't freeze well, buy a smaller package and
learn to plan your meals.

Also here you can buy buns in either 8-packs or 12 (usually labeled
"New England style"), as well the wieners can usually be bought in 8
or 12 packs.

I guess if you throw out half the food you buy then it might be
cheaper to eat out. It's also cheaper to not throw money in the trash.
And if you "toss a lot of food down the drain", you're being tough on
your municipal sewer system.

Mealworms.

Not in my experience either. I tried it using a soaker hose at the top of
the roof. The water trickled down the roof, evaporated and, hopefully,
cooled the roof and the rooms below. But the temperature of the rooms below
didn't change after a day and a night and about $10 worth of water.
