AsTak

Usenet is not your friend when researching this kind of thing. Google
(or any other search engine) is. Just search on the term "e-reader"
and you'll find all kinds of reviews, articles and web site forums
that deal with the technology. Add the words Sony and Kindle, which
are the major players right now, and you'll get some pretty specific
results.

I've had hands on looks at both. They're both nice. My personal
preference is the Sony. In terms of size, design, and battery life
they're certainly better than laptops or netbooks. I'm a voracious
reader and the concept appeals to me, but it's not likely I'll ever
own one.

They're too expensive. For such a uni-tasker I'm not willing to pay
more than half of some of the cheapest prices I've been able to find
for either.

The content also costs too much. Less than hard copies of the same
book(s), but only slightly. For a DRM encoded digital copy I'm not
willing to pay more than half what I'd give for a hard copy, with
which I can do whatever I want while I'm reading it, and when I'm done
with it. There is some freeware stuff out there, but not much that
I'm personally interested in.

I don't like the limitations and restrictions of the DRM encoding.
There are ways to get around that, but I'd rather not jump through
those hoops. There was recently some sort of copyright misadventure
involving an e-book; don't remember if it was Amazon (Kindle) or
Barnes & Noble (Sony). They reached out to the machines they were
registered to and deleted them with no advance notice to the owners.
Refunds or credits were issued, but that's not really the point.

They only recognize books in there own proprietary formats. Other
common formats, of which I already own a large library, like PDF, LIT,
CHM, TXT, etc. aren't natively supported. More hoops associated with
converting and loading those documents I'm not jumping through.

For now, I'll continue to read on my laptop.

Cheap junk with too many design and function issues.

See:

I am a voracious reader as well.... plus an engineering
student!

I'm attracted to the idea of keeping all my class
handouts on an eBook reader.... as well as possibly
keeping all class text books there too!

I will forget abt AsTak.... and will look at Sony

I thought the Sony was capable of more text formats
than most..... no?

I read that book. Not the best writing, but the story is an important look at
the ways of modern economic capitalism.

Once again, we looked at the extended cable TV lineup to see if we could
justify buying an HD unit. We liked the music, so we went with the
Sirius music. Hooked up the home unit today. Really pleased, although
I'm not sure what will happen in the spring when the leaves are back on
the trees. Reception is currently quite adequate with the antenna
simply at the window. Guess I'll wait til the spring to decide of I
want to get out the ladder, etc.

Next project will be to hook up the car so I can use it for trips.

So much for the TV, but I suppose I'll keep the cable... at least for a
while..

Dear Wife brought home a $$$ dyson bagless. I bristled a bit, but find
it is well-designed and a pleasure to use/empty. Changing bags was, for
me, much less pleasant, slower, and dustier.

One nice thing about this design is the dirt container is clear so you
can see what (and how much) is in there.

With no "public option" you'll pay the insurance companies exactly
what they want, or go without. You might be used to that. I am.
Biggest change with no "public option" is the tax subsidies to the low
incomes will be more - and taxpayers will pay more money - to the
insurance companies.
The main idea is to get the uninsured numbers down, and that means gov
subsidies. Cost control is secondary. Try to do anything sensible
with that and the cry of "DEATH PANELS" rings out across the land.
Some say that using taxpayer money for folks to pay for private health
care insurance is socialism.
I say it's socialism for the private insurance companies.
Commies like that. But they call themselves "capitalists" so don't
worry about them. They just want your money - all of it if practical.
The table is being set. We'll see who gets invited for dinner.

Al Gore Has Security Goons Assault Climategate Protesters
I hope the security detail at this Al Gore book signing isn't the Secret
service. If they are, this is a shameful episode in their history. Asking a
tough question isn't a crime, but Al Gore has his security goons physically
assault and forcibly remove people who asked him about the Climategate
scandal. You can see the protesters yelling on the way out, but they
originally started with a polite question. This is outrageous.

Compare and contrast to GW's home.
The home G.Bush had in TX when he was Pres. was Green. Only after the
Public complained about
Gore not living the Green life style did Gore have some Green improvements.
But, Gore is still an energy HOG

When I lived abroad, the washing machines were quite small and could
have fit in the bathroom of a U.S. home. As I recall, the way to hook
them up was simply to insert a hose pipe and turn the water on.

Amazingly, they cleaned satisfactorily.

Does anyone know what I mean. If so, does such a product exist in the
U.S.?

Sure! However, they can't hold much more than ONE full bed sheet. It would
be faster and cheaper to wash your stuff by hand.

On tv, there is an advertisement for these straps that you put under
whatever you want to lift and--voila!--2 persons can lift the heaviest
thing.

Could that be adapted to transporting a person?
