My Craftsman 917.388853 6.5 HP 21" push mower (Consumer Reports Best Buy in
2005) came with this "fancy" gas cap that supposedly "preserved the gas".

After a couple of seasons, the fancy gas-preserving cap couldn't preserve
itself, and it broke into pieces. I just put a gas-can cap on. It fit. But
the engine kept quitting after a while. So I loosened it up when I was
cutting the lawn.

I'm curious WHAT is the difference between a gas-can cap and a lawn mower
gasoline tank cap? (The threads are the same.)

gas can caps are non vented designed to seal and not let vapors in or
out........

mower caps are vented so as gasoline is used air can enter the tank,
otherwise the engine will quit after awhile stareved for fuel.

how do i know this? many many years ago my mowers vent cap
malfunctioned and quit venting.

engine would run for awhile then quit. i would check gasoline level
put back cap mower would run again for awhile then quit.....

what the heck? thats when i learned about gasoline cap venting:)

A pet doesn't need a purpose. What you have there is a working dog!

I think you need a slave, or at least a robot.

My pocket pets do this for me:

1- The keets sing,

2- They are colorful,

3- They inspire me to go outside where they go into ecstasy,

4- The mice inspire me to work out, but my bicycles are out of the
question, so I go into deep sleep in the hammock.

A pet fills the void of a bad wife too.

There is, there is... One reason is that birds around here are
terrorized or nowhere to be found because the feral cats are fed by
crazy ladies.

Solution? So many hungry people in the world don't know about the
protein value of cats. Do they have cats in Somalia or Haiti?

Only a hammer mechanic uses that method.

Maybe you can patent it and call it the "Budweiser method".

Yeah, trick is to use a dead-blow hammer and have the motor suspended
by the flywheel. A couple of stout sticks under the flywheel will do
that.

Based on what? I've never seen one put up that little fight, but am
open to the possibility.
Perhaps that Canuk has talent.
Tapers are as much VooDoo as skill, I've seen really capable people
walk up and drop a tie-rod or ball joint & even a small engine
flywheel with a flick of the wrist, that someone else has been slaving
over for hours.

IME, it came off easy, because it is a horizontal crank _and_ the
shear key was not sheared (you can still see in the crank key way).
When the key shears it binds the flywheel and crank shaft. IOW,
harder to get off for those without a "puller". It can be done.

Once I popped a flywheel on a vertical shaft: placed a 2 ba fer on the
nut and whacked it with a hammer.

The method has been in operation so long that tools are made, and
speciality items are sold. And the process is reccomended by folks who
know.

I too made an income from the internet for a couple of years. I even
declared this income to the Canadian government and they allowed me to
legally deduct all my relevant expenses including a portion of my rent and
automobile use and they refunded every penny of sales tax I ever paid while
conducting home based business. Because I declared self-employment income
this allowed me the option to collect social services provided by the
government should things turn sour, which they did not.

The internet provides a global market and can allow a smaller overhead for
self-employment operations esp. when job prospects are bleak. Your income
may be lower but it's still an income.

I would have thought lawyers in AZ would be lining up to defend pro
bono.

The government has abdicated its responsibility to protect the borders
and regulate immigration. The case should be thrown out of court. Only
a government lawyer would have a hard time understanding that.

Law - I have a tough time recognizing a profession that frequently
tries to get the guilty declared innocent.

Agreed. As a libertarian, I can't for the life of me figure out how it
is wrong to expect people to prove they are here legally before they
are allowed to suck from the public teat. Or do anything else, for
that matter. And for the people who say it's discrimination because
only "brown people" will be asked for ID, that's ridiculous. If this
law were passed in MA, then they'd be stopping all the Irish Colleens
asking for ID, and they'd find a LOT of illegals. Sure, the illegal
Irish students whose visas ran out tend to pay their own way and not
live on the dole, but they're still not paying taxes on their
bartending pay, either. And they'd be happy to do so, if allowed.

I don't understand why ALL states don't REQUIRE proof of legal status
BEFORE providing services. Don't have a green card? Then you can't get
your kids in school, can't get welfare, can't get treated at a
hospital, etc. And, any employer caught employing/paying illegals
should go to jail. Period. What's wrong with that? How is that
"discriminatory"? If you're not here legally, you should be deported.

However, I also think that anyone who wants to come here and pay their
own way, including taxes, should be allowed to do so, assuming he/she
is not a criminal. You know, the way it was 100 years ago.

So you had a ton of these dumped in your driveway. Of course you
determined what they may have been treated with so you won't be losing
brain cells to the fumes.

Despite all of the extremely powerful interest groups that support
Obama on this issue, Obama's decision to sue Arizona is an significant
political error on his part. These powerful interest groups will,
also, face significant political retribution as a result of their
opposition to Arizona's attempt to control it's borders and to bring
law and order to the state. I, of course, adamantly support Arizona's
new law.

I also support the new Arizona law. Send money to Jan Brewer at her website
to help fight the feds. You can print a form at the site to donate by
check/money order or can donate directly by credit card. Fox News says more
than $500,000 has been collected since the Federal Government announced
plans to sue Arizona. You don't need to send a big donation, even a few
dollars will help.

No. I think that would only sound like reassurance that this one will

These aren't really pets you can get much enjoyment out of. They are
basically pets for people that can't have a real pet.

A "real pet"? That could only be a monkey, but he would also be like a
brother.

Parakeets and mice are pets for all occasions. I have my mice sleeping
next to my computer in the daytime while the parakeets are up and
viceversa.

What do your mice and parakeet do for you? Do they have a practical
purpose? My dog (Lab) will pull the automatic pool vacuum out of the
water if I tell her to.

That's exactly what happened. The flywheel "pin" was shaped like a Z (side
view) instead of a rectangle (I bought six new Briggs and Stratton flywheel
keys from Ace hardware and none look like a Z from the side.)

The hard part wasn't getting the flywheel off; it was figuring HOW to get
the flywheel off. Banging on the crankshaft and prying up on the flywheel
only served to break the plastic intake manifold in half, bending one of
its bolts and breaking the other one in half.

Success only came to me after I totally gave up on this crazy
bang-on-the-crankshaft-and-pry-the-flywheel method. When I finally realized
there were two untapped holes for a harmonic balancer puller, I simply
tapped them with a 1/4 x 20 tap, and voila! The flywheel pulled off with
ease using the flywheel puller.

Now I have to order a new plastic intake manifold, and pick up a set of
screw extractors to extract the broken intake-manifold bolt.

In hind sight, if you have a Briggs and Stratton engine (specifically the
Briggs and Stratton 123K02-0444-E1 engine), DO NOT pry up on the flywheel
and bang down on the crankshaft (what's that gonna do anyway, beside break
stuff). There's NOWHERE to pry except soft aluminum and plastic anyway.

Just use a harmonic balancer puller (after tapping the holes in the
flywheel left for this purpose). I wish I knew that when I started this
thread! :)

I do THANK EVERYONE for all your help; it was my first lawnmower repair in
my life! When the parts come in for the broken intake manifold, I hope it
will work again!

I ordered a new intake manifold, busted when I followed the errant advice
to bang on the crankshaft and pry up on the flywheel.

Don't bang and pry!

Nothing is gonna happen except aluminum and plastic stuff under the engine
will break. The plastic part that broke is #50 (intake manifold, Sears PN
497465) and #54 (intake manifold screw) on page 36 of this 40-page pdf.

If you ever have to remove a flywheel like the one in my Craftsman 21" push
mower 917.388853 with a Briggs and Stratton 6.5HP 123K02-0444-E1 engine,
simply tap the two holes in the flywheel with a 1/4 x 20 tap, and use a
harmonic balancer puller and voila, the flywheel will come off.

Resist the tempatation to pry (you'll only break stuff) and bang on the
crankshaft (what's that gonna do anyway; the crankshaft isn't going to move
down?????).

When I pick up a screw extractor set, I'll remove the broken bolt; and when
the new intake manifold arrives, we'll put it all back together (with the
new crankshaft pin) and cross our fingers.

Thanks for all your advice; you guys are wonderful!

To follow up on this thread, I learned a lot, summarized as:
- It cuts better when/if you sharpen the blade
- Sharpen the blade off the lawnmower; balance it before putting it back

In the end, I bought a new blade from Sears ($15) but only because I was
also ordering a new plastic intake manifold and screws which were snapped
in half by my idiotic attempt at prying up the flywheel while banging down
on the crankshaft. NEVER DO THAT!

Nothing is gonna happen except aluminum and plastic stuff under the engine
will break. The part that broke is #50 (intake manifold, Sears PN 497465)
and #54 (intake manifold screw) on page 36 of this 40-page pdf (half of
which is in Spanish).
