Nothing...

There are needs and there are wants.

Almost everything we desire are wants...optional purchases.

The best technology deal is when you don't buy it.

Technology items depreciate incrediably quickly.

I am typing this on a computer that seven years old and it is far more
than is needed for this application.

I used to be at the leading/bleeding edge of technology
acquisition...after a few cycles I determined that it was NOT the best
place for optimization of my resources of time and money.

Question tho.... what IS the best place for
optimization of YOUR resources of time and money NOW?

Just curious what you do now

No...you see it's like this. We're all "frugal" so that means for the
most part we don't spend our money. Being extra frugal we can find
these quality items at garage sales, Craigslist or other non-
traditional outlets like Big Lots and Dollar Tree. Worst value would
be buying the latest 50 inch plasma TV at full retail price regardless
of what store sells it. There's not much return on the investment
(unless you're an extreme hedonist and value your pleasure over
everything else in life...and big TV's are your personal Nirvana).
But paying $3 for a Sunbeam radiant heat toaster at a garage
sale...now that's a great value because that thing will last another
20 years.

Depends entirely on what it is that needs to be bought.

Or they dont see any point in discussing where they get the best value.

I agree...that is what I am thinking when I say "great value". ;<)

Valid points.

Actually I would think that fugal buyers would want to discuss where
the bargains are....aren't we all looking for fugal buys when we have
to spend our hard earned money.

When I started the discussion, I was not looking for a list of store
names....fugal is where you find it.

Or maybe they feel that anyone reading here would already be aware of
the obvious places like ebay and craigslist and garage sales etc etc etc.

Sure, but I doubt that anyone can tell me about a place where I can do
that that I'm not already aware of with the vast bulk of the stuff I buy.

> When I started the discussion, I was not looking for a list of store names....fugal is where you find it.

Sure, but again, the obvious places like ebay and craigslist and the salvos etc
should be know to those who want to get the best value for what they buy.

I just bought an SD card reader from hongkong using ebay, for just $1, with free shipping
and am about to buy another because the first one works fine and its such excellent value.

There are a number of stores around my town that sell nothing but batteries of
many types. Could be worth check such places out.

True...but in my experience their pricing tends to be rather
expensive.

Again price a new USP with rebates before springing for a new
battery..sad but true.

You could have put in a protective order to close out the position if the stock

True but let me add two points. This is in the pre-internet days
when it was harder to follow prices and then,as now, the broker assumes
no liability if the sorder is not followed,.

When I had a furnace with a pilot light, I always shut it off except during the

Based upon the "heating value" of that month's gas, I assume.

China's biggest plastic bag maker closes after ban
Jonathan Watts in Beijing
The Guardian,
Wednesday February 27 2008

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/feb/27/china.plasticbags

China's war against "white pollution" has claimed its first
large-scale victim with the closure of the country's biggest plastic
bag manufacturer.

The shutdown of Suiping Huaqiang Plastic, which employs 20,000 people,
highlighted the social costs of a government drive to clean up one of
the world's most polluted environments.

It comes less than two months after the state banned production of
ultra-thin bags and ordered supermarkets to stop giving away free
carriers from June 1.

That surprise move - which went further than anything done by the US,
the UK and many other developed nations - was hailed by Greenpeace,
Earthwatch and other green groups as a sign of growing environmental
awareness in China.

But it was a disaster for the company, which earned most of its 2.2bn
yuan (£155m) income from the annual production of 250,000 tonnes of
bags.

The firm ceased production in mid-January, after the government
announced the new ban on bags under 0.025mm thick.

"Over 90% of our products are on the limit list, so the only way
forward for the factory is closure," a management official told the
Xinhua news agency. The closure is unlikely to be the last. Judging
from their speeches, Chinese leaders are increasingly anxious about
foul air, filthy water and unhealthy levels of pollutants. The
crackdown on plastic bags is part of a campaign against "white
pollution" - the term used to describe the visual eyesores caused by
Styrofoam trays and carrier bags, which snag on trees and get blown
far and wide by the wind.

Supermarkets give out 1bn plastic bags every day, while shops and
restaurants use double that amount. Plastic packaging accounts for an
estimated 5m tonnes of crude oil each year.

Japan side 'to blame' for tainted foodstuffs
By Zhu Zhe (China Daily)
Updated: 2008-02-23 09:10

The alleged contamination of Chinese-made frozen stuffed buns and
fried pork rolls exported to Japan was likely to have been caused by
loopholes at two Japanese wholly funded producers, China's top quality
watchdog said on Friday.

Japanese media reported on Tuesday that methamidophos, a pesticide,
was detected in two batches of frozen steamed stuffed buns from China.
Another pesticide, phorate, was also found in a batch of Chinese-made
fried pork rolls.

However, investigations found the two firms involved - Shandong Nicky
Foods Company and Qingqing Nicky Foods Company - are both wholly owned
subsidiaries of Nicky Foods Company in Osaka, Japan, the General
Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine
(AQSIQ) said in a statement.

The administration said the companies followed Japanese production
procedures and standards, and were supervised by Japanese staff.

"The contamination is likely to have been caused by loopholes in the
producers' purchase of raw materials such as vegetables," it said,
indicating the companies might have bought from suppliers other than
designated export-oriented farms.

Meanwhile, another AQSIQ statement released on Friday said China had
suspended all exports from the Shandong-based Wangyu Aquatic Food
Company, whose mackerel products exported to Japan were allegedly
contaminated with dichlorvos.

However, it said the mackerel were originally caught in Denmark and
all flavorings except salt were provided by the Japanese importer.

Local quality authorities in Shandong also tested 18 samples from the
factory, including all raw materials and packages, but found no traces
of pesticide, according to AQSIQ.

These alleged contamination incidents, along with a food poisoning
case claimed to have been caused by unsafe frozen dumplings from China
two weeks ago, have sparked safety scares in Japan over Chinese-made
food products.

Both nations have pledged to cooperate in investigating these cases to
avoid damaging diplomatic relations.

AQSIQ said on Friday that a team of senior Chinese police officers,
including top criminal investigator Wu Guoqing and toxicologist Wang
Guiqiang, had arrived in Japan on Wednesday to help investigate the
dumpling case.

As it desperately attempted to blame anyone but china for the problem.

And which clearly used ingredients sourced in china.

Interesting that a link for a camera take you to amazon.com which
asks for a credit card yet when one goes to the real amazon.com the
camera is not there.
Also interesting that the site given here is based in Thailand.

Unfortunately the local Embarq service in my area is much more expensive
because you have to pay extra for phone service.

My choice is Embarq or Comcast <SIGH> Both SUCK

Need something for a project or whatever? McMaster-Carr probably has it on
a shelf within a day's trip from you. Why is that important? Because you
can pay slightly more for something, pay the price of UPS Ground and have it
delivered to your home in 24 hours in most cases... The cost is a bit
higher, but the time saved is huge if you would have had to drive out to
"wherever" to buy the parts and spend time there, etc. Plus, with the price
of gasoline, it may even be cheaper depending on where you have to go.

So... When I need a "thing" whatever it is, I sometimes just order from
McMaster and have it delivered to my home. Sometimes they even use a
courier and if I order in the AM, I get it in the PM for the price of UPS
Ground...

Just a tip. No benefit to me if you use them... I'm not a spammer, I'm a
long time "member" here and lurk a lot...

www.mcmaster.com

Search for something. They probably have it. ...Except food I would think.

Tide's Cold Water variety is liquid so dissolving is not an issue.

signed the cat up to oa local free site once. Now she is getting as much
mail as wee do from stock offers, harbour cruises, and even Readers
Digest wants her to subscribe.

I do hope the people at the post office have a chuckle evertime we RTS a

At least one store has indicated they may sell them for the

I was in the CS line with a product that was missing parts (a previous
return). The lady in front of us had two kids with freshly-shorn
buzzcuts; they still had hair bits on their shoulders and shirt.

Lady returned the buzzer because "it doesn't work". Ahhh, the American
consumer.

How the mere possession of wealth makes the law in the United States- if
you can pay enough people, you can easily suppress the voices of the
truly committed, and right and wrong mean nothing. It's hard to conceive
of a case where any corporate entity (most of which do not even pay
taxes on their company profits) with thinking management would not stoop
to such slimy-but-legal tactics as noted below to protect its interests.
It is also a substantial argument in favor of the Republic's desperate
need for regulatory protection against such measures.

<http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2008/02/26/ap4700632.html>

Comcast Corp. (CMCSA) on Tuesday acknowledged hiring people to fill
seats before the start of a contentious federal hearing on how the
company manages its broadband network, allowing its employees to take
those seats when the filled-to-capacity hearing started.

Many people were turned away before Monday's Federal Communications
Commission hearing at Harvard Law School, leading critics to accuse
Comcast of stifling debate over the company's practice of favoring some
forms of Internet traffic over others.

Comcast said it hired people to hold seats only after an advocacy group
called Free Press urged its backers to attend.

Boing!! Payoff.

You tell 'em Donna. Show them you knew the answer all along.

Poor "58plumbers@gmail.com" and others like him now don't know what's
hit them.

Nothing like reeling in a very long fishing line that you've
carefully laid out. Good one!!

Hello Donna, you seem to have learnt quite a surprsing amount for
someone who has was a novice just a few weeks ago and who does not
have a background in mechanical engineering.

I'm impressed.

Or i would be impressed if I could believe it but I am afrain I can't
beleieve it.

What did you say was your line of work?

If you have time when you're not posting extended posts to a "quick
and basic" question?

Donna, do you think the other people who have posted to help you
actually suspect what is going on? :-)

Some must have realized it by now. Do you think they are just
keeping quiet?

Maybe, maybe not...but John, you're quite late with this post. Please
do try to keep up. Bill does. :)

Hello Donna, yes I read the thread with interest. It's a great one.
You must make room for it in your scrap book as this thread is one of
your better victories.

I find it very strange that a simple thread took such a long convoluted
route as you describe. You start off by knowing nothing and you end up
by telling specialists what various things are after you have asked them
several times (like the origin of 41,045).

Lovely. Alleged "little old lady" ends up telling the engineers the
information they do not know.

You outclass many of these guys so where was the fun in stringing them
along?

Yes, I love the photos. Thet're a very, very nice touch. They kind of
add a whole new false realism to your claim to who you are and your
sincerity.

Well, almost anyway.

Makes them believe more and more that you are Donna just as you state
you are. Nice.

Let's do a sanity check. What is all this about?

Er, well now it seems to have mysteriously morphed from what it started
out as until it has become unrecognisable.

Main thing is how much time from others it has taken. Lovely. Greatest
shaggy dog thread I have seen in a while.

Anyone else?

Considering that this IS the misc.consumers.frugal-living group I
would expect this discussion to be one of the most active.

Or does everyone look for WORST value when you have to purchase
something?
