Digest for misc.consumers.frugal-living@googlegroups.com - 2 updates in 1 topic

KenK <invalid@invalid.com>: Feb 28 01:54PM

I've gotten a lot of help here so thought this might help somene in the
future in return.

Yesterday morning couldn't type into programs with keyboard or start
programs from the bottom of the screen. Lots of other problems as well.
Rebooted several times. About ready to reinstall XP. For some reason tried
MS Word. First off it told me control key was down! Sure enough - stuck
halfway down. Pulled it up and all works again! Will switch to another
keyboard tomorrow before I boot up. I'd have never noticed it without
Word's help.

Just a tip to put in the back of your mind. In all my ~50 years or so of
computing never had this happen before so it really stumped me.

Dirty keyboard? Turn it upside down and bang it gently - if a lot of
debris falls out that may cure the problem. (Vacuuming keyboards
sometimes helps too.)

Contribute here-https://milaap.org/fundraisers/rural-electrification

Following are a few images of the community that our project is addressing. This community has a population of around 27000 and has minimum access to electricity. Most of the people living in this region are either farmers or microenterprise owners. Hence, they live on once in a year earnings and daily earnings respectively. As discussed with them, following are the common problems faced by them:

The microenterprise owners have access to lighting only for 3 hours every evening that too through by using a diesel generator. The cost of running a diesel generator per day is approximately INR 6500. Also, since the region is in the remotest location, it is difficult to find diesel every day owing to another, which is transport. (Also there are several risks associated with this method)

The women in the houses find it difficult to work without light. As seen in the first picture, this is how every evening is like in Maharajganj. According to the native women, not only cooking is a problem, but the absence of electricity is also a hindrance for the studies of their children. This claim is justified by the fact that the literacy rate of this region is below 50% which is less than the overall literacy rate of the country

The project is expected to impact more than 150 shops in the selected region. They will be getting 4 – 5 hours of lighting to run their shops for a longer period of time and earn extra income.

Project Details
We are electrifying 50 shops in villages of Gorakhpur and Maharajganj via a crowdfunded campaign. (Old Campaign , for which funds are already ready)
There are 150 more shops and several homes which we want to include in our project but due to lack of funds, we are not able to work on them.
Plan
The village has been identified using the support of local microfinance company which will be also maintaining these plants.
Funds for this project will be used to procure the solar panels, batteries to expand the grid.
There would be a local technician/electrician who would be given thorough knowledge regarding the installation and maintenance of the devices.
After completion of the training program, these technicians and electricians will help install a fully established solar power plant on in that area to cover electricity needs of 300 families. Periodic checks would be conducted and assistance would be provided to these technicians.
Our online monitoring platform, TrackSo, will be monitoring the solar systems remotely for a regular check, raise alerts, predict failures and allow control of solar system based on payments.
Timelines for the project. - Installations and training will be completed between 6th-13th April 2017

Example- we have given similar training in villages of west Bengal

Sustainable Solution-
How we will ensure that the people keep getting benefits of the system installed for promised life of solar ( more than 25 years). ?

Fund collected will be used to install grids but regular maintenance will be involved. ( Example- Batteries are required to be changed every 4th year, regular cleaning is required for producing maximum power from the panels, local technicians are required to restore systems during time of breakdown)

After the installation is complete, residents will pay Rs 7 to the local contact for per day use who will be responsible for maintenance, repair, security, and payment collection for this system.

If anytime there are any issues with the system (battery replacement or any other), that will be carried by the installer for the whole life of the solar plant and the cost burden won't be on the villagers.

All the supporters will be provided access to our online monitoring platform and can any day log in and check the performance of the system they contributed for.

Reports- Once the project is completed a full report, photos and recorded videos will be submitted to all supporters.

If any of the supporters is interested in helping us on ground, then we are more happy to welcome them.

doesn't a 20% tax on something coming in from anywhere result in xx% higher prices?

Unless the price of the peso drops by whatever the appropriate amount
is. A couple of months they were ~14/$. Now it's ~20/$.

The "suburb" I live in was built cheesily so that returning Korean War
vets would have a place to live. Under 900 SF, corners aren't square,
the plumbing and electrical work was done by third-graders with inferior
materials, and the design precludes any sort of expansion that doesn't
involve knocking down at least half of the house. No insulation, we
put some in the "attic" ourselves. The thought of the City Assholes
wanting to preserve "values" is laughable. If they were concerned about
that they wouldn't have planted magnolias and Chinese elms as street
trees and then neglected trimming them -- giving the residents a free
lesson in the concept of "self pruning".

Apparently some SoCal architects are building (or threatening to build)
a house out of multiple stacked containers -- adding insulation, glass,
DESIGN, etc. The picture looks fine.

Retired and poor. Why would you care if you survived Armageddon? It wouldn't be fun. Your DNA is already degraded enough that you wouldn't make a good "father of mankind". All your friends and family will be gone. Common courtesy would just be a memory.

To think a holocaust is survivable is to suppose it is possible.

Best to take that money and effort and dedicate it to something that will further humanity. Children's hospitals, feeding the poor, affordable education, the Tea Party. Heh heh, just kidding on the last one.

Bad idea. Those things are designed to be stacked not buried. The sides and tops will buckle under the constant pressure of earth pressing against them. Here's one of several articles you can find with a google search:

Does anyone know of any plans for an affordable Fallout Shelter?
I've found plans online, but they are very complex and probably cost
more than I paid for my home to build them. Being retired and on a fixed
income, I simply can not afford something like those.

However, since Trump is in the Whitehouse, there has never been a better
and more important time to prepare for the inevitable.

I'm sure there are ways to build cost effective shelters. After all,
safety is not just reserved for the rich. (Except in Trumps fantasy
world).

A lot of people built them back in the early '60s. It's probably
cheaper to buy a house with one than to build a new one. Besides, what
with turnover, the neighbors probably don't know about the old shelter.

My first real job -- the director of the lab spent a LOT of time away
from work supervising its construction. We snickered. It's probably a
wine cellar now.

I saw photos of one which was converted by a very rich person into a
very luxurious home. I don't think they put them in desirable places,
though.

They cost something like $2K delivered. OTOH, the Zoning People aren't

While browsing or shopping there their site clearly states if the
product will be shipped by another vendor.
