As we all know, this Senator from NY has a record of being a
protectionist when it comes to foreign trade and acquisition: before
the subprime mortgage debacle, and way before the US was actually the
creditor of the world rather than its defaulter debtor, when the US
dollar was actually worth something, the US which professed to be a
free market economy country gobbled up assets in the newly-freed-from-
communism Eastern European country, enjoyed a cheap oil from the Arab
Gulf countries, Venezuela and Canada, and basically had everything -
from extensions of US-based universities in Singapore to HBO in
Poland. It suit them well to be in a market economy mode.

But when the tables have turned, Schumer turned protectionist, and
renounced everything that his father and school teacher had been
teaching him about the "free market". All of the sudden Chuck wants to
restrict access to investments in the US by "non-sovereign-
governments". 2 Years ago, he almost single handedly blocked the
acquisition of 6 US ports by Abu-Dhabi based company. Fine and dandy.

The problem was, that Chuck later on extended this "national security"
ground to block a Chinese-based mid-size company from investing in a
small US-based oil corp. All of the sudden "free enterprise" is not in
the mode.

Now, every time a Chinese, Arab, Russian -based company wants to
invest in America, he raises murmurs in halls of Congress. We're all
used to this by now. Sometimes Pelosi joins in the protectionist
chorus. When 2 months ago Nasdaq and Borse Dubai reached an agreement
to acquire OMX, let the latter own 30% of the London Stock Exchange
and acquire almost 20% of the Nasdaq stock, Chuckey went all up in
arms.

But now, in light of and facing the subprime mortgage meltdown, when
financial stocks are reduced to junk, all of the sudden he welcomes
Abu Dhabi's cash infusion. No more talk about "national security",
"sovereign funds" and the like. The racial profiling of all Arabs as
terrorists and Russia as a "re-emergence of cold war mentality"
disappears. Right now, Abu Dhabi's money is welcome, because it suits
Chuck Schumer's purposes. Tomorrow, another acquisition by the same
company would subject it to rejection on bogus "national security"
grounds. It bugs me as a Chinese that everytime we purchase a minority
stake in a relatively small to midsize US-company, Congressmen run
amok. Like with Blackstone, Bear Stearns or 3Com.

So next time China blocks US investments, threatens to pull the plug
on the US dollar and trigger a runaway hyperinflation stateside,
switch all our money into Euros, Pounds or Yens or impose Putin-style
foreign ownership restriction on your investment, don't bitch nor
don't go to the WTO to complain. You deserve your due - you're a
selfish nation attempting to take over the world like you massacred
the Indians.

David Huang.

P.S.

Next time - before bitching about our abysmal environmental record -
go and ratify Kyoto and stop being such an obstructionist on climate
change. You've had 250 years to do it, and you still refuse. US's per
capita emissions are 20 times greater than China's.

In this case, I can see his point, that as a middle eastern company,
what prevents this company itself might be in a position to ship
terrorists into this country without our knowledge? Better be safe
than sorry later.

And it suits America's purposes to take the money and help out the
banking industry at this time.

Bogus "national security" now may be real national security later on.
I am with him.

It suits us Americans fine and dandy, as you said.

Just think of all the money American companies invested in China
itself. You should be grateful for the American dollars.

Yeah, that's close enough to make just cutting your losses and buying
new more attractive. In my case, $450 to repair vs. $800 to replace,
it was a little tougher call. I may yet regret going with the repair,
but it has worked fine so far.

AMD has just released the AMD Athlon LE-1620 processor. It sells for $50,
& has free shipping. (newegg)

It has a full Megabyte of L2 cache, and runs at 2.44 GigaHertz.

The best part - it uses only 45 Watts! I was about to get a similar CPU
that used 89 Watts. I'll end up saving $5 a month on my electric bill,
which means that after a year of use, I'll have gotten it for free!

Yes, I leave my PC on all the time to record HDTV programs. If you don't,
then it would take longer to get this cost savings.

Someone recommended mouthwash for dandruff.
I did about 3 applications over about 10 days and
my dandruff went away. It also worked on my
flaking eyebrows. I read on the Internet that you
can also use apple cidar vinegar.

I'm talking about the REALLY underpaid ones. People who mortgage
their health to earn less than it will cost to recover from their job
induced illness. People who recycle electronic garbage without
protection from the poisons. Miners who routinely get kill for about
US$20K death benefits. Factory workers who can only afford to live in
dorms packed like sardines. These people are economically below the
US burger flipper.

Easy to claim. Hell of a lot harder to actually substantiate that claim.

Particularly when you consider what alternate employment is available to them there.

There's fuck all of them involved in doing that.

No one is holding a gun to their heads and forcing them to work in jobs like that.

And the vast bulk of mining isnt done in china anyway, they mostly import what they use now.

Or they choose to live like that.

Hmmm...sorry to hear that.

They just sent me an offer to get the online version
for only $12 extra a month as I already get their
magazine.

What did you pay for your online sub?

Pig ignorant lie with WW1 particularly.

Pity about the US involvement in WW2 before that happened.

AND the Jap attack was the direct result of the US getting involved
in oil sanctions against Japan as a result of Nanking etc anyway.
If the US had not imposed oil sanctions on Japan, and had not got
involved in interferring outside its own country, Japan would not have
attacked the US. And there is the tiny matter of what Perry got up
to in 1854 too. AND the Japs wouldnt have attacked the US at all if
the US hadnt grabbed Hawaii and the Philipines etc previously anyway.

Because the US was supporting england and russia so aggressively.

Nope.

" Because the US was supporting england and russia so aggressively."
Support is different than intervention. Ron Paul has said many
times to support our allies with trade.

The Japs would not have attacked us at all is true.. It was more
because we build Air bases within a few hudred miles of their
coastline to bait them into attacking us.

However on both cases you make a assumption based on absolutely
nothing. Would the US be better or worse off if we had not been
involved in WW1? I contend much better. WW1 brought on the
condidtions for the 1913 Federal Reserve act and the 1930 bankrupcy of
America and is the starting point the economic chasim we will fall
into in the next few years.

We would have been in WW2 because of the declaration of war and
sinking of our ships. However, we would not have been in VIETNAM,
KOREA, and the countless other police actions that we LOST. We would
not be percieved as bullys and more hated than any time in our
history. Building bases the former soviet union has pissed them off,
they have withdrew from all treaties and we again have 23000 nuclear
missles pointing at us.

You have the hubris of the neo-cons not facing reality that we are no
longer a world power, our economy and military are very weak and over
extended. Strength is speaking softly and carrying a big stick.
Being a bully and mucking around is weakness, our military is weak,
over extended.

Screw the rest of the world. They are adults and can take care of
themselves. The US isn't anyones Messiah who is supposed to sacrifice
himself for them. Get off the Cross ~ Marterdom is ignorance.

Chinese lunchtime television on Friday gave ordinary people a basic
tip on how to live longer. They were told to stop breathing, drinking
and eating.

A state news program, quoting unnamed "health management experts,"
told residents who live on the Chinese mainland to stop breathing the
polluted air, stop drinking the polluted water and stop eating the
insecticide and chemical laden food.

Expect higher cancer rates, Chinese.

Pity about the earlier US intervention in WW1.

Pity that Lend Lease was nothing like that.

> The Japs would not have attacked us at all is true.. It was
> more because we build Air bases within a few hudred miles
> of their coastline to bait them into attacking us.

Nope, the only reason the Japs attacked the US was because
the oil sanctions meant that Japan was going to run out of oil
quite quickly and it was important to get access to the oil from
Indonesia before they ran out of what they had stocks of.

Without the oil sanctions, there was no need for the Japs
to attack the US in an attempt to wipe out the pacific fleet
so they could invade Indonesia and get access to oil again.

> However on both cases you make a assumption based on absolutely nothing.

No assumption whatever involved with the long history of
US involvment in foreign conflicts LONG before even WW1.

> Would the US be better or worse off if we had not
> been involved in WW1? I contend much better.

Irrelevant to that line you ran about what Jefferson,
Madison, and Washington explicitly warned against.

> WW1 brought on the condidtions for the 1913 Federal

There was no bankruptcy of America in 1930. There was
JUST a great depression which the US economy survived fine.

> chasim we will fall into in the next few years.

Just another of your silly little hysterical fantasys.

Pity that none of that would have happened if the
US had not gotten involved in foreign conflicts.

Korea wasnt lost. Neither was Haiti, Yugoslavia, etc etc etc.

Pity about WW1 and WW2 that didnt produce that result.

Pig ignorant lie.

Pig ignorant lie.

Have fun listing a single country that has more military power.

> our economy and military are very weak and over extended.

Still leaves everyone else's for dead, child.

The economy in spades. Its STILL where the absolute vast bulk of
the full commercialisation of almost everything happens first, most
recently with software, the internet, google, ebay, paypal, etc etc etc.

> Strength is speaking softly and carrying a big stick.

Pity about what Jefferson, Madison, and Washington explicitly warned against.

> Being a bully and mucking around is weakness, our military is weak, over extended.

Still leaves everyone else's for dead, child.

They clearly couldnt in WW1 and WW2.

Pity about WW2.

You should definitely go for the Intel chip. I base this on the
superior technology and performance, plus I own a buttload of their
stock. ;-)

It isn't too smart that the US has allowed one-sided trade laws that
allowed this.
I actually take the time to look to see where things are made. It's
getting tougher to find anything other than "China".
But get off your high horse there, dude.
Too much of our electronic trash is sent to China for processing,
because China allows it to be done improperly and therefore cheaply.
We keep finding things such as lead in toys. Even US consumers aren't
dumb enough to let that continue forever.
Our environmental laws keep our country less polluted and safer. You
may be able to produce things more cheaply, but if one of the reasons
is poisoning and pollution, you will lose big-time.
You are getting off the bicycles and into the cars. You will become
fat like us very soon, and the air will be that much worse.
And your money will also go to OPEC.

China is very competitive because of the currency value imbalance.
But it would be great for China if they recognized the things that the
US has to clean up, and not go down that road.

All things are cyclical. 25 years ago the US was worried that Japan
was selling us everything and buying up the place.

I've had lots more fun with the Linux stuff than with usoft. I have
three computers at home, and I'd like to not have to purchase several
copies of whatever usoft puts out. You can get the Linux for free if
you are geeky, for modest prices in distributions if you are less
geeky.

Both the XP and Linux boxes have been stable. I use the Open Source
office software on the XP with no problems at all. I don't have OS
loaded on the Linux box because I keep blowing up the Linux box for
lab purposes in classes.

I was able to purchase a copy of XP Pro for under $20 a couple years
ago from a local community college because I was taking classes
there. You might be able to get a windows (or other) class and a low-
cost copy of some version of windows if you are lucky enough to be
near a community college.

They're not all that rare, even now. I come across them from time to
time. It seems they come in clusters, kinda like someone decided
they weren't worth keeping anymore so broke their piggy bank. ;-)

I've got an electric baseboard radiator that I like a lot. The brand is
Honeywell. Mine is 2 or 3 years old, but it looks basically like this
one:

http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HZ519-Digital-Profile-Comfort/dp/B000BC2GGS

It's not an oil-filled heater. Internally, there is a long (maybe 3 foot)
rod-shaped heating element with metal fins on it. So it's basically a
straight wire with a big heat sink around it. You put the thing along the
base of a wall, and the heated air rises, creating a convection current that
circulates air around the room. It's close to completely silent (there's a
very, very quiet 60 Hz hum). And there's no feeling of draftiness because
it makes the air move very slowly.

It takes maybe 30 minutes to really get a room heated up, but once it does,
it's very comfortable everywhere in the room, provided you keep all the
doors closed in that room. It works well for a bedroom at night. It has
a timer so you can run it for 8 or 10 hours and not worry about having to
remember to turn it off in the morning when you're in a hurry. I typically
would turn it on an hour or two before bedtime and set the timer for 10 hours.
Then the bed (including sheets) has time to heat up before I get in it.

That amazon.com listing shows it running $129. I don't think I paid nearly
that much for it, but I bought it at Home Depot in the clearance section in
the springtime. :-)

I had a similar mildly bad experience with Consumer Reports. They stated that
they auto-renewed the subscription, so I avoided that by using a "virtual
account number" generated by on my credit card's web site. The virtual account
numbers always expire the month following when they're created, so they're
great for anything that tries to auto-renew: by the time they try to run
the charge for auto-renewal, the number is expired, the charge won't go
through, and they conveniently cancel the service for you. :-)

Anyway, I didn't get stuck with an auto-renewal for that reason, but I did
waste money. I had bought their new car buying guide (which, by the way, was
really helpful), and they had incomplete information about a first model year
car I was interested in. They had plastered all over the book that I could
get updated information by subscribing to their web site, so I spent $30 or
whatever to do so, only to find that though it had been 6+ months since they
published the book, the web site's info hadn't been updated in that time.
So much for updated information. I basically spent $30 for nothing, based
on the silly idea that their web site would be updated more than once a year.

And every 2-3 days they send me a "Special Offer" of "only $1 per

Yes, it was $600.

$600 is less than $800 for a new one, so I probably would have thought
about that for a while. But I was out of town and my wife just got a
new one. I don't fault her, the difference is small enough that I could
go either way.
