When I was a kid my mother froze all manner of luncheon meat. I'm still
here - so obviously no harm done. 8-) But I do recall that some meats
came out of the process better than others. Bologna was kinda
disgusting. Edible, but not that "pleasant" in texture after freezing.
And as you mention - certainly not something that takes well to long
term freezer storage.

True. It's amazing how miserly some people can be about this point after
spending all that money on the food, not wanting to "waste" money on
freezer wrap or bags and letting the stored stuff shrivel up and end up
being tossed anyway. If you don't want to invest in a vacuum sealer
double up: Wrap meats in plastic wrap - getting all the air out - and
then place in good quality freezer bags. Get meats out of the store
packaging - those styrofoam "plates" with pads to absorb stuff under the
meat. The styrofoam readily passes air to anything it touches, and the
packages normally have a large amout of air space in them. Put your
frozen veggies in freezer bags too and cycle through them as quickly as
possible.

Yes, but since I keep my freezers full, just because of the
way I use them, its not a major effect and chest freezers

the thermal capacity of the air is trivial compared with the
thermal capacity of what is stored in the freezer.

so are you saying that as long as you keep an upright
freezer stoked with frozen foods (not empty air)....
that it may be as efficient as a chest freezer anyway
even given cold air falls of upright when opened?

Its more complicated than that. The reality is that even if you
dont keep it full, the energy required to cool the air that replaces
what falls out is very small, and you dont open freezers that
much anyway, just a couple of times a day at most.

I doubt you'd even be able to measure the difference in practice.

That isnt clear at all, particularly with his claim

And while the chain system is simple, its really too
primitive. A completely automatic system based on
movement detection and a panic button that the

Then it makes no sense to have a system which

Sure, but thats just as true of his keep it simple claim too.

Using that line, there is no point in the chain system at all.

They'd be better with a daily phone call instead.

Its not necessarily just 'elder care' either, it makes a lot
of sense to have some mechanism like this for all those
who live alone, integrated into the alarm system.

Gets messy tho deciding when to alarm food consumption wise.

It doesnt necessarily add much at all to the cost of a decent
alarm system. Its essentially extra logic rather than extra
components with most stuff except the carried panic button.
And that is pretty essential to get assistance as quickly as
possible after a fall or just not being able to get out of bed
or the chair etc.

The main problem is that we could never get our geriatric to wear it.
He appeared to decide that it was too much of an admission of how
geriatric he had become, although he did get a cellphone on his own
initiative which he carried when out on his walks for exercise. I'd love
to why one was acceptable and the other wasnt, but it can be quite
hard to work that stuff out once they are getting rather nutty. Some
of them can be quite remarkably nutty.

There are already auto-dialers available, and you could use one of those
converters to use a regular phone on a cell line.

There are much cheaper options than Virgin Mobile as well.

That said, monitoring contracts don't have to cost $20-30/month. See
"http://www.alarmrelay.com/" There may be others that are even cheaper.

Me too.

When I was in my late teens I was unemployed and semi-homeless and I often
spent days without eating because of want of money.

I also did occasional casual work as a catering assistant- a "plongeur"- in
London hotels- I have also collected cigarette ends from the street, exactly
as Orwell, and the London tramps did as they marched from spike to spike.

"Down and out in Paris and London" is a fascinating and easily-readable
novel and I'd recommend it to anyone.

I loved the portrait of a Paris I've heard about but can never know, and then it was so
vivid I could actually *feel* his hunger and tiredness when he - literally - walked
kilometres to save the metro fare...

I read it first when I was learning English, a lifetime ago. I couldn't grasp *everything*
then, but I read it again some three or four years ago and was absolutely fascinated.
Alas, I'm afraid that living in such squalor contributed to shorten his life... :(

I spent one night in Camberwell spike and it hadn't changed much from
Orwell's description of forty years earlier.
