I pay no fees or a monthly charge on checking and savings account;
never have. I only keep a few thousand dollars in the savings
account and that's to cover any appliance or vehicle emergencies.
Years ago I signed up to have my paycheck deposited in my checking
account and that qualified me for free checking. I only write 4-5
checks per year and when I need new ones (the plain blue or green)
I order them online from one of the check printing places for a LOT
less than the bank charges.

I don't even fool with CD's any more as the bank keeps the lion
share of interest. That money is with an investment company.

you can easily get 1%+ with insured bank accounts

dividends are only stocks, i think, and with stocks come risk

let's say 1% x 100,000 is 10k, divided by 12 equals $833.33
[if you can get more than 1%, then closer to $1000 a month]

you can also look into laddered CDs, for more interest;
do some research on this; you only tie up a portion at a time of your 100k

The key is to find a bank/credit union that won't charge more in fees
than you get in interest. The good news is that $100K may be enough for
them to waive monthly fees; the bad news is that you may have to keep a
chunk of that money in low- or no-interest accounts.

Interest on Money Market accounts is in the 0.5% range. Shorter-term
CDs (12-24 months) max out around 2%. Laddering them takes a bit of
time and effort to set up the sequence; and at the beginning, much of
your $$ will be in very-short-term CDs or holding accounts with lower
interest. Of course, YMMV depending on type of bank (brick, online,
credit union...) and current special offers.

I've had my Staber for more than ten years now, and it works fine. It did oversuds on my very first wash, but that was because I (foolishly) ignored the instructions and used an "ultra sudsing" detergent -- after that I've been using the right powdered detergent with no problems whatsoever. Staber's customer service is rather thin, though -- and being a niche brand, finding a local repair person to deal with any serioius problems my be a challenge when the time comes -- but my washer hasn't yet needed any fixing. For doing normal household laundry, it's been everything I'd hoped for when I bought the machine.

Get a old used laser all-in-one printer. Lasers cost way less than any
inkjet per page. Simple B&W one should handle what you need.

I've used a Samsung SCX 4300 laser all-in-one for some years. Works fine
and reliably. I replaced the starter toner supplied with a generic type
about 3 years ago - still going.

Connected via USB to Mac and Windows machines, quite noisy when it's
printing, and a very high standby electricity consumption (20W IIRC).

All of that said, I now tend to just take a photo with my phone and keep
the electronic copy.

Generally speaking, copies of bills can be downloaded by logging onto your account with the company that issued them. Images of cleared checks can be downloaded from the bank they're drawn on. Just keep the digital files, as catalpa suggests. No reason to waste all the paper and ink/toner unless an issue arises.

Best information yet from both you and catalpa. He'll probably will
never need the paper copy but he'll have it just in case.

Any good all-in-one scanner will have PDF software included, so you can
"print" directly to PDF without using paper. If not, you can download
PDF Creator from pdfforge.org. It is free (decline the add-ons), and
installs as a printer driver, so you can 'print' to PDF anything you can
print to paper.

I have a Brother all-in-one printer/scanner. My J6920DW is near the
upper end of their price range, but they have other very good units at
reasonable prices. Costco sells them, if you are a member.

I've had the cheapest Brother laser printer since 2009 and it's worked
flawlessly. Toner carts are ~$12 (ebay) and I just put in the second
full one. I would assume that their cheap 3-in-one would be just as
reliable.

Save your own copies (files or paper) of things that might be important
to you in ten years -- you probably can't download bills etc. for more
than a few years.

My laser printer is also a Brother (HL-5370DW). It also was a more
expensive one (but still <$200 7 years ago), because I need the
automatic duplexing. I've used 2 toner carts in 7 years.

Apparently the new cheapest ones are wireless and do auto duplexing.
Brother also gives you a linux driver! So does Samsung, but Canon
refuses to provide linux assistance for any of its products. I have a
nice Canon scanner, but I was really annoyed to find out that I HAD to
use windows; SANE provides some support, but not enough.

Get a scanner from someone who doesn't use it and then print the scans on
your printer.

Or better yet, just scan the items and save the digital copy. Only print
when a paper copy is needed.

Put the cheapest plan in your cart (though it should not matter which one you put in). They will then give you an option for buying a full year of time for $49.95. Delete the first plan you put in the cart!!! The full year for $49.95 will stay in the cart! Buy it. That is what I did today. I had over 3,000 minutes on my cell phone which I only have for emergencies and leave it in my car. I did not need any more time. I only paid $49.95 + tax and got another full year. You do not have to buy more minutes!

Thanks for the tip of just deleting the minutes at the purchase page. I did not need minutes, but airtime only, and was able to purchase the year of service for $49.99 only. Sweet!
