Wow, you're pretty optimistic.

The economy as a whole is screwed. If you hadn't noticed the
unemployment rate is being reported as 5.7% or so which in reality
translates to 2 to 3 times that number since that particular statistic
only records NEW filings.

Then of course there are the energy prices. Unless you've been hiding
under a rock, you can't have missed that your electric rates probably
went up by about 20% and gasoline and oil have gone stratospheric.

Energy costs impact food costs.

Communities are crumbling because of the mortgage crisis.

And people still believe we're just heading into a recession. I have
news for you, we're heading into a depression but nobody wants to say it
because of the panic it would cause. We've now seen 8 bank failures in
the last two weeks which is interesting in itself. I predict that BofA
will be the first big bank to fail.

Umm, no. I did better under Clinton because while my income was
higher, my
taxes were lower. I have no idea why, but as my income drops, my taxes
go
up. For example, in 2007 I made about $4k less than in 2006, but paid
$1k
more in taxes, with the same deductions. My income is less than half
it was
under Clinton, and yet I pay about the same $ amount in taxes. Under
Clinton
I paid 18% of my income in taxes and now it's closer to 30%. And I
don't
make even close to middle 5 figures anymore. If the economy doesn't
improve
so that my customers have some money to spend, I will have to close my
doors. The Regugnant Party has to go, and the sooner, the better.

Why would Canada want to join US currency? We never had the easy
credit that is causing so much pain. Perhaps we didn't have the same
standard of living because of it, but we won't fall as far either.
Some of our banks had investements in US notes and lost billions, but
they will recover.

There might have been a convincing argument a few years back when
Canadian currency seemed undervalued. Not so much now.

I have a Royal portable typewriter with an installed black ribbon and a
spare ribbon. Both ribbons have totally dried out in spite of being
packed in a plastic bag. Is there a way to bring life back to them,
especially the new one, as they cost nearly 10 dollars for the plain
black ribbon? WD40? Stamp pad ink? Rubbing alcohol? Water? Anyone has
any idea for me? I would like to be able to bring the typewriter back to
life, in case of an emergency where electricity would not be available.

Chuck the typewriter in the dumpster and get a printer for the PC for peanuts.

Check your insurance policy, it may cover thief with no deductible.

Years ago I'd used a chain and padlock to lock up the hood. The pucks in my
inner city area were not able to got into my engine compartment and got so
pissed that they broke my windshield. As a student, I couldn't afford
comprehensive insurance and learn how to replace the windshield myself
purchased from a junk yard.

There's a misconception about thieves. They steal because it is easy.
I say that as someone whose car (the same car) has been stolen once and
attempted to have been stolen twice. 88 New Yorkers are apparently easy.

There's a cable that releases the latch, on the opposite side of the
cable attachment is the other end of the lever and you can slip a
screwdriver into a slot in this lever and pop the hood. I cut this end off.

At this point I don't care about the appearance of the car as the
front end was already clipped by an out of control SUV on XMAS eve. For
the moment, necessary frugality prevents me from replacing the car.

I like central air. Put in a new furnace anyway when I bought the
house, so it wasn't much more to add the air.
Really opened up the light too, getting rid of a couple big window
units.
We keep it at 80F and sometimes drop it to 78-79 if we feel
uncomfortable. Ceilings fan make that work for us.
It really doesn't cost much to take the heat edge off.
Also good to know the outside temps and open the windows when
it's right.
Bricks hold the daytime heat and opening windows when the evening
temps drop enough sometimes cools the house faster than the A/C.

Let me try to explain again, do you pay taxes?
The people getting welfare, get more money from the govt. then they
pay in taxes. there fore they have a negative tax burden.

And the proceeds from the appreciation on your home is tax free ?

generator, which automatically supplies power when there is an outage.

A neighbor with whom we are cordial but do not socialize began
appearing at our door during these outages requesting to use our
refrigerator, our bathroom to apply makeup for a night out on the
town, and other such requests. The last time she brought an extension
cord and suggested that we let her run it to her house.

We feel a bit like the Little Red Hen: We've taken the initiative to
prepare for these outages, yet this woman just wants to rely on
us.........
