KenK <invalid@invalid.com>: Nov 29 04:46PM

I got a new Tracfone cell and activated it yesterday. Unfortunately, it did
not get a phone number. It took tech support over an hour to get me a
number. Then the number turned out to have the wrong area code - 520
instead of 928. (Our area code used to be 520 but it was changed to 928
some ten years ago!) I didn't change it then because due to the unexpected
long service call I now had other things I needed to do.

Question, after all these problems do I dare to call them again this
weekend and request a phone number change to the correct area code? If I
don't, any local land line calls to me will be charged long distance. I'm
afraid something will go wrong and mess up my paid for year's time.

Suggestions?

TIA

You know people with land lines that have to pay for each long distance
call?

Tell them to get a plan, a cell phone or Google Voice and call long distance
for free.

out, partially disassmeblying it to wipe it clean, moving the
reset gear back to the full position, putting it back together, then
pouring the new toner in. It comes in a squirt, ketchup kind of bottle,
so that's easy.

It would probably take an hour to do it the first time, probably 6X that

Doing your own is by far the least expensive option.

Sounds like an excellent idea, but I do so little printing that the cost
of the remanufactured cartridge is negligible.

Thanks; cheap Samsung here. Seeing refurbs online and nonames
online $34-40. OEM $77-90 online AWA local B&M (Staples). Same price
range as the rakuten vendors. Haven't checked local refurbs yet.

Well, I'm getting the 10% warning but I print so little I've no
idea how long it will last. Have noticed that online descriptions
incude shelf life. I guess there's a reason, eh? I shall heed the
warning; thanks.

My printer is just finishing its original limited quantity
"starter" cartridge and I think it's a couple of years old. All I know
about shelf life is that those cartridges I saw online have a clearly
stated finite shelf life (24 months). I suspect that, as a practical
matter, shelf life is irrelevant but "technically" the chances of early
failure from moisture intrusion, oxidation, etc. increase as the unit
ages in storage.

Yeah, that's what we did with our copy machine years ago. Probably
will try it with the cart in this printer when it begins producing
defective copies butr it's not there yet. Just want to have a

The local refiller charges way more than that.

Long ago I bought a cheap Samsung printer and a spare cartridge (not
cheap) at the same time. When it came time to put in the new cartridge
it wouldn't work. Staples was sorry, but the warranty was only a year,
and I'd had it for at least two years.

And the moral of this story is don't buy the cartridge until you're
pretty sure you're going to need it real soon now.

I ordered mine in March because I knew I was going to have to print our

The printer itself was flaky -- it jammed and crumpled paper frequently
(I tried several weights) and eventually printed black vertical streaks
more often than not. Product support said it was probably the
cartridge. I swore I'd never buy anything Samsung again, but I changed
my mind. Still, I replaced it with a Brother cheap laser printer which
has never given me a day of trouble.

Given that they come sealed in a mylar bag, attack from outside seems
unlikely.

I seem to remember that you can eke out a few more pages by removing the
cartridge, shaking it and reinstalling it. This may be what we did to

I don't generally dig in the bags of garbage, usually there plenty of neat
things just placed on the sidewalk for the garbage pickup.

That said, maybe the difference is that if I"m paying for it, I expect a
level of neatness? Or maybe it was that I couldn't find what I was
looking for among the mess?

One Big Chain book store closed here (they actually have another store a
few blocks away, so it's not as bad as it could be, at some point one
chain ate the other but kept both stores going for a long time). There
was a half price sale the last few weeks. I went as soon as I knew about
it, and it was as crowded as I've ever seen it. But the place was a mess.
Clearly people pulled out books to look at, then couldn't get access to
the same spot, so they just put it back where they could. The only
categories that I saw unlike that were history (it wasn't in great shape,
but much better than elsewhere) and the books about space travel and
astronomy, that looked barely touched.

It wasn't that long ago that one opened within a distance I was prepare to
travel. I went in a few times after that store opened, I think I only
bought a box of computer paper (which was a really good price). But the
few times I went in around that time, I found the place fairly messy,
shoppers not putting things back where they belonged, but apparently the
staff not coming along to put it back the right way. It just felt like a
cheap experience, so I generally don't bother. I've been in a few times

I thought someone would complain that it was too early for talk of
Thanksgiving.

I think people decorate, but more the table rather than put up scray
spiders and such on the front lawn. Of course, perhaps they start to put
up the Christmas lights (if they took them down last year), get them up
before the snow comes, even if they wait to turn them on.

I was shocked, nobody posted their annual warning about the clock change,
where they warn that some clocks don't like being turned backwards, "it's
not frugal because it can damage the clockwork" which may be true, but who
has fancy old clocks around that will be damaged?

And the time for frugal candy has disappeared, they seemed to clear out
the Halloween stuff the day after Halloween. But, maybe now is the time
to get Christmas decorations, it seems like they never get cheaper the
closer you get to Christmas, until it's too late to be useful this year.
I know I've been thinking about getting some LED Christmas lights, and I
wait and the prices never drop. But right now they are on sale.

Walmart, Stuff I buy at Smart&Final, Stuff I buy at Trader Joe's, stuff

They don't actually compare, they just pretend. You agree to it if you
join. The solution is simple if you don't wish to participate in this
form of security theater.

Costco actually used to check, and one of them found something that was
NOT on my receipt, and I was really pissed because the checker missed it.

Costco and Sam's are the same, just slightly different. Costco is
slightly ckeaper. NEITHER of them carries that good Stagg chili any
more, and 'Cattle Drive' sucks badly.

Nobody agrees to anything like that at Walmart. And there is no
indication at the store entrance or anywhere in the store that they
will inspect your receipt when you are trying to leave.

Does Walmart inspect your receipt when you are leaving the store?

The closest Wal-mart here does. They have been doing that for about a
decade. Seems to me they should post a sign(s) at the entrance with
regard to that, but they don't. I'm getting tired of it, planning to go
out of my way to avoid Walmart for a while. Even if it means traveling
miles across the food desert... I see the sheep lining up at the exit to
Walmart in order to get their receipt inspected before they leave. I just
can't do that.

I suppose one could refuse the inspection. Their only recourse being to
disallow your entrance to the store. But that hassle isn't worth it IMO.

There are much better reasons to not give your business to WalMart.

Trolls often post no-archive, like this one...

If you intend to help other people by posting to a group like this,
please do not post no-archive. If you are just a troll, posting
no-archive helps hide your trolling...

The one I go to used to have someone visually checking carts as they
left, asking for a receipt for un-bagged items. Then a year or two ago
they stopped even doing that. Now there is no one obviously checking at
the exit, except sometimes a greeter (goodbyer?) wishing everyone
leaving a nice day or whatever (and likely still doing that visual
check).

they have someone there to "go through the motions"
of inspecting your goods, but
they don't/can't really do a thorough job

i think it's more of a "deterrent"
than really trying to catch shoplifters

in the last few years,
they seem to have cut back on looking at receipts,
but i've seen a few "greeters"

Golly, who'd have thought it possible: An ignorant top-posting
twit masquerading as "mommy" trawling through ACF-L. I guess AOL _did_
serve a useful purpose, after all by providing them a home.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little

I agree with you on that one but, unfortunately, in many
communities it now is impractical, if not impossible for some items, to
avoid shopping at Wallyworld thanks, in large part, to Wallyworld -- in
concert with other "big box" stores -- and their brutally predatory
"competition".
To OP's point, I had the experience sometime in the late '90's but
it was because I was leaving the store with an item too large to bag.
Gratuitous Aside: In 2000, while comparison shopping automobile
tires, I toured a Sam's Club to determine whether it could ever possibly
be worth actually _paying_ someone just to shop in his store and there
witnessed customers dutifully lining up like cattle in a chute so that a
Sam's minion could compare the contents of their shopping carts to their
receipts. It didn't seem to matter to any of them that the items being
"verified" already belonged to _them_!

People decorate for Thanksgiving?

The time would be better spent making a custard pie.

Apparently some people believe that "frugal" means "anal-retentive".

Coincidently, according to Merriam-Webster...
anal-retentive:
exhibiting or typifying personality traits (as frugality and obstinacy)
held to be psychological consequences of toilet training

Thanks for pointing that out.

I have never thought of associating "frugal" with "anal-retentive".

If anything frugal people get rid of crap because it takes up valuable
space.
