Proving that necessity is the mother of stupidity I've done telephoto by
shooting through my binoculars. With a POS 3MP P&S camera and cheap but
big 20x80s the shots can pass for ones taken with the native optical
zoom. An adaptor like for a spotting scope would make things easier.
It would be really nice with the camera would do manual focus.

On the other end, I taped a lens from a pair of eyeglasses to the
front of an HP335 to take close ups. I used Velcro so I could R&R it.

As MCF-L's resident 3000-exposures-a-week guy ;) let me just say that
you left off a point:

6) comes with a flying unicorn pony that poops rainbows

In other words, you're asking for a feature set that's something out
of a fairy tale - you can probably get any three of those features
together, but not all five.

I'll get it out of the way: if you're shooting for publication, you
want - or will soon come to want! - better optics and image processing
than a pocket camera is going to give you. You don't have to spend
$5000 on a professional DSLR setup, but $800 ($500 for a body, $300
for a good long zoom lens) is _not_ unreasonable if you seriously want
to take pictures of squirrels from 60-100 feet.

If it weren't for the long-zoom requirement, I, like Bev, would point
to the Canon PowerShot A720IS. I take mine all over the place and
it's great at lower ISO settings. (400+ it does get a bit grainy.)

As it is, I'm going to recommend a camera I don't actually own myself:
Canon PowerShot SX110 IS. I owned another long-zoom Canon all-in-one
years ago, sort of the great-grand-daddy of the SX110, and this has
the specs that are really going to matter to your squirrel - 9mp and
a 10x zoom. It doesn't have an optical viewfinder, and only takes
two AA's... but at a $249 MSRP, and you can probably find it on sale
for closer to $200, maybe even under $200 on Black Friday.

Hope this is of some use.

Yes, you're right. The early high resolution sensors were much
noisier than they are today, but that's been a while.

Though I rarely shoot an ISO higher than 400 (and stay as far below
that as I can), I can go pretty far up the scale before noise becomes
an issue. Usually somewhere between 800 and 1600, and can get almost
to 3200 before it's too bad to deal with.

You bet! And the biggest one is the lens. Even a moderate quality
lens attached to a "pro-am" quality DSLR will out perform the optics
of the best point and shoot camera out there. You've got to go pretty
far down the quality scale towards the junk end before that's not the
case.

By the way, thanks for the new word! Never saw "ameliorated"
before. :-)

Driving and Car Maintenance Transportation accounts for 66% of U.S.
oil use -mainly in the form of gasoline. Luckily, there are plenty of
ways to improve gas mileage.

Driving Tips:- Idling gets you 0 miles per gallon. The best way to
warm up a vehicle is to drive it. No more than 30 seconds of idling
on
winter days is needed. Anything more simply wastes fuel and increases
emissions.- Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration, and
hard
braking) wastes gas. It can lower your highway gas mileage 33% and
city mileage 5%. Drive at lowest and constant rpms; 2000 rpm are
enough; you can save up to 30%. Even a Porsche can be driven at the
4th gear at 20 mph and at the 6th gear at 50 mph with 2.5 times less
fuel consumption.- Avoid high speeds. Driving 75 mph, rather than 65
mph, could cut your fuel economy by 15%.- When you use overdrive
gearing, your cars engine speed goes down. This saves gas and reduces
wear.- Use air conditioning only when necessary.- Clear out your car;
extra weight decreases gas mileage. Each 60 pounds increases fuel
consumption by 10%. - Reduce drag by placing items inside
the car or trunk rather than on roof racks. A roof rack or carrier
provides additional cargo space and may allow you to buy a smaller
car. However, a loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel economy by
5%.- Check into carpooling and public transit to cut mileage and car
maintenance costs.

Car Maintenance Tips:- Use the grade of motor oil recommended by your
cars manufacturer. Using a different motor oil can lower your
gasoline
mileage by 1% to 2%.- Keep tires properly inflated and aligned to
improve your gasoline mileage by around 3.3%.- Get regular engine
tune-
ups and car maintenance checks to avoid fuel economy problems due to
worn spark plugs, dragging brakes, low transmission fluid, or
transmission problems.- Replace clogged air filters to improve gas
mileage by as much as 10% and protect your engine.- Combine errands
into one trip. Several short trips, each one taken from a cold start,
can use twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance
when
the engine is warm. Do not forget that in the first mile your car
uses
8 times more fuel, in the second mile 4 times and only after the
fourth mile it becomes normal.Long-Term Savings Tip- Consider buying
a
highly fuel-efficient vehicle. A fuelefficient vehicle, a hybrid
vehicle, or an alternative fuel vehicle could save you a lot at the
gas pump
and help the environment.See the Fuel Economy Guide
(www.fueleconomy.gov) for more on buying a new fuel-efficient car or
truck.

While your post is specious and not even troll worthy, the concept is
used world wide in variations. Could be half the people on earth don't
use toilet paper as we know it. Of course conventional paper is not
reusable, but other things are. I remember a young Arkansas couple in
the 60's who used what they called butt rags for their babies. Adults
could do the same and may be doing the same for all I know. I'm
sticking with what works for me now, but I could survive outdoors if I
had to without paper.

Grandpa used to have a running joke about finally having a use for
all the corncobs he had laying around after the harvest. I'm not going
to elaborate.

Don't they just use a bidet or something in some parts of the world,
though? No toilet paper, and just use water to wash off? It seems like
something like that could work, if coupled with some sort of industrial
strength (fast) air dryer.

try a moslem site [aljazeera?]. they use cloths for wiping and think
that westerners are incredible dirty to only use paper.

I'm not sure that will work. Regan and the two Bushes were the ones
who rang up most all the government debt -

In recent years, conservatives have primarily borrowed to enrich
themselves - essentially borrowing from the masses to enrich the wealthy.

Nor did they bring up civil servants that earn that much with overtime.

'dinged'? dinged you say? $50 is way more than some peoples
entire disposable income for a year. .. the same people cutting thier
pills in half, or going without dinner... all so the meter maids
can get 48k a year, and police can retire at more than a working
physician earns. ($150 to 200k a year... and rising fast believe it
or not)

Total outrage will ensue of course, but not until its too late.

One thing has improved in SF. At one time if there was street cleaning
between,say, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. they would write tickets before
the cleaning and then return an hour or so later and write more tickets
proving it was revenue and not a cleaning program.
They no longer do this and if you find a street cleaner and get
behind it you can park.

Out of curiosity... I don't see anyone disputing that they like to
charge for touch-tone service. And even if it doesn't _save_ them
anything, it certainly doesn't appear to _cost_ them anything?

Didnt dispute that they do.

Irrelevant to what I disputed.

And some dont charge extra for touch tone dialing anyway.

I read it twice. I still can't figure out what it's got to do with
frugality. Is disconnecting traffic signals frugal because it saves
on electricity?

Or did the original poster aim for misc.consumers and miss?

Baffled...

Well, my 640x480 is pretty inadequate, but it's good enough for
convincing somebody that if he keys your car you'll have a record of his
face and license plate. Other 'record' shots too...

Can't remember where I read it or the details. Ergo, worthless.

Raw files are overkill in my case. I took 200K shots with my Coolpix
800 for 6 years and was perfectly satisfied except for the 2x zoom,
inadequate flash and slow write-speed (hence the 200K shots).

I've scanned the best of the 35mm and 2.25^2 slides (I'm really happy
with my Canon scanner, even if it is windows-only) and have a big box of
prints to do... and another big box of 8x10 b&w to do... one of these
days... As long as I keep them all on multiple HDs I figure I'm way
better off than with paper.

I've got a box of b&w prints from the 1920s -- friends and relatives of
my grandmother, I guess. My mom didn't know who those people were or
where they lived. I see stuff like that at estate sales too. Depressing.

Most residential streets in high-parking-demand areas of Philadelphia
don't have meters, but have signs saying 2 hour limit except for people
who have residential parking permits of the particular number of the area
in question. The car has to have address that its registration is based
on in the area for its particular number residential parking permit.

For example, if you live on a high parking demand block in University
City, and your car is registered there, you can get a permit with the
appropriate number (I forget what that number is - maybe 2 or 3)). With
that permit, you can park anywhere with no time limit on any unmetered
block with signs indicating time limit without that particular number
permit - that is, most residential blocks in University City with time
limit. Anyone who does not live there is subject to a 2 hour limit 8 AM
to 8 PM or whatever except for Sundays and legal holidays.

Any resiential block in Philadelphia with parking meters (it appears to
me there are a few, but only few) are for those without cars or for those
well heeled enough to have their own parking garage spaces rented or
owned.
