I don't mean to take the p but did you possibly mean Shoe Goo? (See eg
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shoe-Goo-Repair-Adhesive-Clear/dp/B0030ZULM4/ref=sr_1_1?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1285773424&sr=1-1)
If so I swear by it for repairs to all sorts of things (soles, heels,
rucksacks, tool rolls etc etc) but I wouldn't turn to it for sticking
soles on.

I have a pair of insulated boots whose soles detached a couple of years ago.
I simply put them back on using ordinary contact cement, and they've been fine
ever since.

I've stopped ordering from some of my favorite suppliers because they would
ONLY ship FedEx ground, and I told them why. For the life of me, I can't
figure out why anyone uses FedEx ground. It costs a lot more than the USPS,
and the packages would arrive faster if they sprouted legs and walked here.

Made a formal complaint against United Parcel Service, aka
UPS today with the Federal Trade Commission for tampering
with my medications en route. UPS is without a doubt one of
the most irresponsible and corrupt companies in the market
today. When the new Federal consumer protection agency gets
going, I will complain to them as well about this horseshit
company. Let's see if the Obama Admin is serious about
reining in bad companies.

Americans would riot over gas taxes where they riot over retirement
age. If there were riots against chaotic traffic, you could count me
in. ;)

Keep in mind the gas prices in Europe are artificially high due to
taxes. The wholesale price of a barrel of crude is about the same
everywhere in the world. As for retirement age, it's not the
government's job to finance your retirement, it's your personal
responsibility. I know social security won't be around when it's time
for me to call it quits. I've had a retirement fund setup for myself
since I was 20.

I thought they were kept artificially low here. Anyway we need to
downsize our cars and consumption.

Thanks, guys. Looks like I need to make this a more quantitative
comparison by using a thermometer, and taking readings between the rooms
at different times of days.

Now that the temps are a bit lower, I'll also go up into the attic
and take a look there. If I do it with someone tapping with a broom in
that room, I should be able to get a better idea of exactly where I am.

I may also try taking temps of the exterior walls. Not sure exactly
the best way to do that, but perhaps take my son's slightly insulated
lunchbox, put the open side against the wall, and thermometer in there?
I'm guessing that if 1 room is less insulated than the other, then
that room would have a lower temp faster than on a cool day.

I may end up needing to blow some of that cellulose insulation into
the wall for that room. The only other alternative I can think of would
be to totally rip out the drywall, put in new roll insulation, and then
new drywall. That would be a shame, since it was all just spackled and
painted.

Harbor freight frequently has a thermometer on sale goy $10 that you just point
at something and push the button.

We are in deep crisis, no doubt about it. And yet the solution is so
simple... sacrifice the Sacred Cows.

Sacred Cow #1: TAXATION

Sacred Cow #2: CHEAP GAS

Tax gas and the problem is solved... but that's political suicide. ;)

That's the dilemma of democracy and socialism.

TM is a poor crazy bastard who just posts on his one favorite subject -
hatred of motor vehicles because they interfere with his use of the roads.
His other favorite subject is attacking Christianity. If you respond to this
poor crazy bastard, then you are a poor crazy bastard too.

He likes to reference monkeys and other wild animals normally found only in
zoos because he is most likely a wild beast himself. I think he fornicates
with monkeys, but I can't prove it.

TM should confine himself to just one thread instead of proliferating them
like a poor crazy bastard. He is insane of course. I liken him to the
village idiot of olden times. The difference these days is that no one any
longer recognizes the village idiot because idiocy has become so widespread.

But I will be here to remind one and all of what a poor crazy bastard TM is.
It is mark of My Greatness that I can still recognize the village idiot even
if the rest of you can't.

I'm not an idiot. You are calling him an idiot.

Tom Sherman is not a poor crazy bastard. He is often wrongheaded, but he is
not stupid. You are both a poor crazy bastard and stupid. In fact, you are
so g.d. stupid I do not believe it is possible to offend you.

Stop proliferating threads. Mr. Sherman thinks it all just monkey poo, but
you no doubt missed that evaluation of your shit.

working with the mind can be harder than working with the body. I've
done both and know what hard work is. As a profession, where do you

If the Internet were properly designed there would be no need for IT
specialists (does radio or TV have IT specialists?). If you had a brain in

The key word is "hard". If something is hard for you to do, whether mental

Folks who take pride in having worked hard deserve nothing but disdain. I

Because:

A: Ed Dolan could not handle hard work if he tried.

B: With his personality, Ed Dolan could not keep a job even if it meant
starving otherwise.

Ed Dolan has spent his life living off the income of investments made by
his harder working forebears.

Mr. Ed Dolan makes the best argument yet for confiscatory inheritance
taxes - they would eliminate the parasites from society.

Where does Mr. Sherman think capital comes from? No investment, and we all
end up living like Soviet workers.

> Work or starve, I say.

Nonsense. Not everyone needs to work, only those who seem to prefer it to a
life of leisure.

A life of leisure is easily within reach of any American. All you have to do
is never marry, never have children, do not buy a house or a new car, and,
in short, do not ever spend a penny you do not absolutely have to spend.
Jeez, I would have thought even a jerk like Tom Sherman would have been able
figure this much out on his own.

Sorry Ed, but most USians need to work full time even if they just want
to eat a subsistence diet and have a place to live. Cheap housing
(boarding houses, etc) have disappeared, and even a 150 square foot room
with shared kitchen and bathroom is not that cheap. The same could be
said for a liver and sauerkraut [1] diet.

Mr. Ed Dolan is sadly divorced from the contemporary real world.

[1] Reportedly the least expensive nutritionally adequate diet.

Well they're a very good option even if they're not cheaper, and in my
case Lipitor was cheaper.
However for those like myself, and there's plenty of them to be found
if you do a search online, Lipitor can only be described as pure evil.
The side effects just don't make the drug worthwhile and as soon as
their copyright protection expires they'll probably release a better
statin which will render Lipitor obsolete.

Lawyers get many hundreds of dollars an hour for doing practically nothing.
They are the best example I can think of when it comes to a worthless

which benefits their customers.

Apparently, from his response, Tom begs to differ.

Say there, Conan the Librarian, you lugubrious laggard and parasitic
sloth, you should perform a hard days one day so that you can
formulate an opinion regarding what that entails before spewing your
ill-conceived disdain of the working man. For what it's worth,
working with the mind can be harder than working with the body. I've
done both and know what hard work is. As a profession, where do you
think lackadaisical troglodyte internet troll ranks with civil
engineer and IT specialist? Never mind ... rhetorical.

Let me see if I have this right. Cerebral work is not hard work and
should be disdained because it is not hard, but, then again, hard (ie
physical) work is to be avoided because it is hard. I guess then all
work, of any type, is to be disdained, avoided and one should not take
pride in working but rather pride in avoiding work of any kind.
Irrationality reigns and the conundrum continues. So who is the moron
here? Readers cast your votes.

In all my years and miles of driving and cycling I've never seen a rear-end
collision as a result of someone braking for a red light or for a red light
camera.

Then you haven't been driving for many years. It happens all the time.

Its what happens when people drive too fast, suddenly brake and the
other person behind, as happens all too often, isnt the regulatory
distance back.

I've been driving legally for about 33 years, cycling for about 46.

Nope, never seen a rear-ender due to someone braking for a red light, or a
camera. I've seen rear enders in traffic and on motorways and under other
circumstances ...

I'm glad for you. I haven't seen it either. But that is what we call
anecdotal evidence. The statistics are here:

http://thenewspaper.com/news/18/1844.asp

I haven't seen anyone get struck by lightning but I understand that it
does happen.

The cell phones weren't around before either. How can you break on

Maybe it's because the odds are the same.

The situation around here BEFORE was very funny... Cars would be slow
to turn left with the arrow, but kept going long after the light
turned red.

Big Brother already does that service for you. He decides that you
can't freely import cars from Europe. They must meet certain
standards, the same standards SUVs don't meet because they are not
technically cars but trucks, and yet you can drive them with a regular
license.

It sounds complicated but it's all about money. ;)

Chavez' socialism allows you to fill up a gas guzzler's tank with two
bucks. Something most Americans don't know or else they would turn
socialist.

I'm trying to find out the best adhesive for gluing leather shoes back on
to a rubber sole.

I know the polyurethane adhesive that came in tubes for gluing on 'stick on
soles' that we got from Woolworths was very good, but even if i could buy it
now, it was expensive for just a smallish tube.

Looking on some sites that supply to the shoe trade, I can see that they
sell: Neoprene cement, rubber solution, synthetic vinyl cement and
polyurethane.

Does anyone have an idea which would be the best bet, without it costing a
fortune?

I know that the polyurethane glue i used from Woolworths was very good, but
i'm thinking that buying a litre tin (which is the smallest quantity i've
seen for sale on these sites) might well all dry up quite quickly since my
rate of using it will be quite slow.
Thanks for any help.

I don't mean to take the p but did you possibly mean Shoe Goo? (See eg
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shoe-Goo-Repair-Adhesive-Clear/dp/B0030ZULM4/ref=sr_1_1?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1285773424&sr=1-1)
If so I swear by it for repairs to all sorts of things (soles, heels,
rucksacks, tool rolls etc etc) but I wouldn't turn to it for sticking
soles on.

Preferably one with a smallish turbo for a really good kick up the
rump at 60-70mph in top gear. 225bhp 2.0 TFSi Audi, 112.5bhp/L. Fiat
Punto 1.4 Evo Abarth Multiair turbo 170bhp, 121bhp/L, 47mpg. 335i -
306bhp, 101.4 bhp/L, near flatline torque from nothing to 5500rpm,
then it drops off as turbos are too small.

Then try a premium diesel turbo, SAAB 1.9 TTiD or TT Multijet (Lancia
Delta). Another good kick up the rump in top at M-way speeds.

Then try the worlds best production SI turbo with variable phase,
duration and lift valve timing. Nissan 2002 X-Trail GT - SR20VET 2.0L
280bhp Japan only (import), 140bhp/L, flatline torque from 3200rpm all
the way to max power at 6800rpm.

Don't hold your breath but variable compression SI turbo may yet
appear. Nissan are supposed to be production ready, just needs
something FR 2+2 and smaller than a 370Z to sit in, 1.6L 225bhp
140bhp/L and it will flat line the torque curve.
http://www.nissan-global.com/EN/TECHNOLOGY/INTRODUCTION/DETAILS/VCR/
http://www.prodrive.com/up/vcr.pdf

Problem is they all come at an increasingly premium price.

V8's even ones that technically are no better than L1.3 Ford Kent,
just 4x bigger so 4x more power, are even more pricey both to buy and
keep in fuel.

These magazines are often biased towards diesels as its what the
authors of the articles drive.

I'd like to see Tdi's compared with Tsi's and Sdi's compared to
standard aspirated Petrol engines for a fair comparison.

Most of my driving is in stop start traffic and I don't like to hang
around I like to get away quick and Petrol I think is better. I
couldn't car less about being able to pull away slightly quicker at
mid speeds and even if I did then how does Tsi compare to Tdi? I think
diesel is pretty good for fuel economy and I like the idea of the
diesel engine but I can't live with the extra noise and rumbling of
the engine and also knowing how much more I am polluting on a local
level. All the talk of diesel being greener for the last couple of
decades its actually a lot worse on a local level and the stuff it
gives out is 100 times more nasty than anything petrol could hope to
do leading to bronchitis, asthma, other respiratory illnesses and
cancers. No thanks I'll stick with the refined.

Red light cameras are causing lots of rear-end collisions as drivers
break sharply to avoid tickets. SInce everyone is going over the speed
limit, well, you can guess what happens. The cameras seem to prevent
very few side impact collisions because most opposing drivers
understand that the trailing cars in a pack will usually continue
through a light just turning red and wait a second before starting.

I've heard that argument 100 times, but it makes little sense:

1- Observe proper distance b/ cars, ie. a car for every 10 miles...
Isn't that taught anymore?

2- When it does happen it's most like the result of the cell phone,
which is the bigger problem,

3- It's preferable a rear-end collision to a broadside one,

4- The guilty party pays for the crime, where before it was uncertain
who ran the light,

5- Cyclists and motorcyclists were victims of lots of these accidents
since they were simply ignored,

6- Money for the city is always good --if they use it right. ;)

OK, this is the situation in Belgium and Germany which I gathered
around. For an eyewitness account, you must kindly provide airline
tickets, car rental fees and hotel accommodations. Lunch is on me...

"Just a perspective from over the pond.
In Belgium (or at least in Flanders) there are a lot of camera's. We
have 3 kinds:
1. Trafiic lights. They detect if you run through red lights and only
that no speeding. Mostly places on dangerous crossings. Sometimes they
are combined with speed camera's but that's rare
2. Speed camera's mostly on rural roads in buildup area's where people
really should be carefull of there speed
3. Highway patrols. Sometimes moving along with traffic or standing on
the side of the road with a speed gun.

Most people here think that the government only installs these to get
more money, while there effect has been proven to lower accident if
placed on accident sensitive locations. I coulnd't care less, since I
never speed.
For the hacker command, we use camera's taht aren't connected to any
network, so no hacking is possible. Yes, that means that from time to
time somebody needs to go by every camera to get it's picture and put
in a new catridge (analog or digital).
Also bnther, thos camera's are correct. Theve been calibrated plus
they allow a tolarence. If the speed limit is pe. 55mph they only
start flashing at 60mph.
Another interesting thing they do here in Belgium: Since the camera
itself is quit expensive they only by a few but construct a lot more
poles to put them on. Since you can't see from you're car if that box/
pole has a camera inside. You'll slow down for every pole (or not
speed to begin with) They move the camera's around so you never can be
sure where the real ones are."

***

I was impressed at how rigidly Germans obeyed the speed limits when I
was driving over there last month.

I was also impressed at how reasonable those speed limits were, for
the most part. Urban areas and high traffic areas limited, highways
with a high "recommended speed" of 130 km/h. (I also understand that
although the police do not enforce a speed limit, if someone gets into
an accident above the recommended speed, it could impact the
willingness of their insurance provider to cover the cost of the
accident.) In other words, they weren't playing the silly games that
U.S. highway patrols do on rural highways, hiding behind billboards or
trees. The traffic cameras keep a strict eye on the areas (around
exits or in urban/developed areas,) where the speed is properly
limited. Slower traffic keeps right, faster traffic keeps left. If we
were to move in that direction, it would be an improvement from where
we are now, at least from a driving safety and efficiency standpoint.
On a technical level, things seem to work well.

However.... I am still concerned at the civil liberties implications
of government cameras taking pictures for law enforcement purposes.

http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22498

***

About the government having you in check... no big deal. It's the
government "by the people, for the people, etc." But they'll be
feeding on the real bad guys.

If you leave four car lengths at 40 mph you will have three cars move
in front of you. I'm well aware of the "rule", but clearly we're
facing real life here. There is no indication that cell phone use has
a significant effect. I almost hit someone who stopped for a yellow
light the other day and I was paying attention. You just don't expect
people to stop like that. I didn't hit him because I had enough room.

Maybe the rear end accident rates will drop as people get used to
this. If so, it is certainly a good thing.

Common place in Germany. But with true socialism we can ban Ferraris.

Having a Ferrari in America though is a teasing game.

I just saw an ad for an Audi, V10 capable of doing 195 mph.
Now , they said it was very affordable, but never revealed the price.

They figure they'll milk you twice when buying this car: 1- At the
time of purchase, 2- When you use it at full capacity and get so many
tickets.

Or you can park it outside your house with a sign, "Hey you all, I got
a Ferrari!"

I see them roaring all the time between 2nd and 3rd gear.

I don't want to be in a collision b/ MiniCooper and SUV.

What is the problem, the Mini or the Maxi?

A difference in insulation in the ceiling (or walls) may be the cause
(been there, had that problem).

Have you actually checked that with a decent thermometer ?

There are some things that make a room appear to be hotter
or cooler when in fact it isnt actually hotter or cooler at all.

One obvious possibility is that it may not be as well insulated as
the other rooms you are comparing it with. That may not necessarily
be deliberate insulation, just the wall construction or exposure etc.

You can get that effect if the walls of his room are better insulated etc.

As others have mentioned;
look for poor or damaged insolation. There could be moisture
in the walls that has compromised the insilation, for instance.
Or amybe the builder ran out of insilation before he could finish
the room.

From personal experience I can tell you that insilation makes a big
difference. I had a room like you describe. When I went into the
attic I found gaps in the insilation and one entire rafter bay
was uninsulated. 2 rolls of fiberglass made a huge difference.

You should also check for proper air flow from your furnace.
I would check for broken, disconnected, or crushed ducts.
also uninsulated ducts running through attics or crawl space.
It may also be that the ductwork is undersized. If the main
duct is too small, it may not have any air left for the
room at the end of the run.

Also make sure that the room has a proper air return path.
If the door to the room is closed all the time, the HVAC
system can't remove the old air.

Allow me to join in. Yesterday I almost tripped over a package
delivered to me from FedEx, I was expecting it the next day, so that
was fine. I saw the delivery guy dropping off next door and I spoke to
him. "Everyone else knocks on my door or at least puts the package
behind the screen door." He looks at me like I'm speaking Martian and
says, "OK". Too cool to be true.

I've had two packages go missing, both 'delivered' by FedEx. I have
cancled orders once I learned they were being shipped FedEx.

Thank you. All those simple yet effective solutions have been
incorporated into the MASTER PLAN.

They are considered part of New Urbanism, or livable communities. The
problem is the movers and shakers live in Gated Communities.

Excercise, fruits and veggies. Much cheaper and less side effects.

You do know that genetics plays a big factor in high
cholesterol and some people have to take such drugs
even if athletes?

Have to? Who says you have to?

Quoting:

In 2004, Pfizer's blockbuster drug Lipitor became the first
prescription drug to make more than $10 billion in annual sales. Over
twenty-six million Americans have taken Lipitor, the most popular
statin drug. Pfizer is now running full-page Lipitor ads in numerous
papers, including The New York Times and USA Today. The ads feature
Dr. Robert Jarvik, inventor of the artificial heart. The ad reads: In
patients with multiple risk factors for heart disease, LIPITOR REDUCES
RISK OF HEART ATTACK BY 36%.* The noteworthy part of this ad is the
asterisk and this explanation of the 36 percent statistic: "That
means, in a large clinical study, 3% of patients taking a sugar pill
or placebo had a heart attack compared to 2% of patients taking
Lipitor."

Another Jarvik/Lipitor Times ad proclaims: "In patients with type 2
diabetes, LIPITOR REDUCES RISK OF STROKE BY 48%.* If you also have at
least one other risk factor for heart disease...." The explanation:
"That means, in a large clinical study, 2.8% of patients taking a
sugar pill or placebo had a stroke compared to 1.5% of patients taking
Lipitor."

Twenty-six billion dollars a year for a one to two percent decreased
risk for heart attack and stroke—that's what all the fuss is about? It
almost seems like snake oil. Yet, some doctors are recommending we put
statins in the drinking water. Others are now suggesting that infants
with a family history of heart disease should take statins as a
preventative measure...
