I got fed up with feeding my sputnik lamp a steady diet of crapular 15
and 40 watt candelabra bulbs, which it ate like candy.

With 16 bulbs, it was too expensive to run at full output (400 to 600
watts) and when dimmed, it made the room look as though it were either a
60s fern bar or lit thru a urine-colored gel ("bastard amber" istr).

So i went to chinese outlet store (Menards, as they say in alasska) and
ponied up for a shipping container of Sylvania 5-watt candelabra base
decor dimmable CFs. It was painfully expensive, but otoh, i didn't
save all my pennies for a genuine vintage Space Age Atomic Populuxe
Sputnik lamp just to have it sputtering like a gaffed firefly. Baby
needs new tubes.

All i can say is... *wow*! I'm getting better light of the sputnik
than ever, including an experimental loadout of 40+60 filament bulbs i
almost burned the house down with Bright! White! No eye-searing hott
filaments. And... it's only costing me 80 watts. Again: 80 watts!
The old way took 400 to 600. wowie wow wow!

Oh, and the bulbs look good on my sputnik lamp, very much faithful to
the old meteor bulbs, certainly more so than the miniglobes i had.

Did i mention they're dimmable? They are, over a wide luminosity range.
Almost as good as tunsten, but with one weird advantage: the color stays
a lot truer, a lot closer to white. Not red-shifted yellow. kinda
weird as kemjo would say.

CF tech. has taken a nice evolutionary step from the commodity 13 and 18
watt standard-base tubes of a couple years ago. It's not inexpensive,
but you might find it worthwhile.

So.... based on my immediate impression, A+.

Also, a lot of ppl were prob. buried in potters fields, so a tramp
thru a cemetery doesn't give the big picture on longevity.

But how can you know how old the chicken is just before it's rotissed?

I guess I didn't make that too clear. I meant that the chickens they
cook are purportedly ones that had gone past the 'sell by" date when
they're lying in the meat section.

Come to think of it, I don't entirely trust the 'sell by' date on ANY
meats to not have been changed by unscrupulous markets.

this would be owner occupied. In NYC this was such a problem that they
"created" a "A.I.R." law. Artist In Residence. esp. for the wonderful
lofts. Now it's too "Hip" and expensive. sigh ...

If I want to activate PagePlus prepaid cel service, any
recommendations as to the best way to do it? I see PagePlus has 3
different plans, do you need to activate *under* a particular plan or
are activation and selection of a plan two different issues?

I see there are activations available on ebay, as well as vendors on
PagePlus's site. Any advantage, disadvantage to going one route or the
other? Is there anything to know that a vendor might not tell you?

As I understand it, the only phone that's guaranteed to work is a
Verizon phone. Why is this? Can you use ANY Verizon phone? Does it
matter if it's a few years old - i.e. used?

As an observation, I called the PagePlus customer service number and
got someone who spoke very fractured, heavily Spanish-accented
English, who it seemed ultimately hung up on me when I couldn't
understand them and asked them to repeat themselves. Called back and
got someone else who was also marginally intelligible, who gave me a
number for a PagePlus vendor that is out of order.

Anyone have any major problems with PagePlus customer service?

I recently bought a ticket from Delta online and they sent a
confirmation email that included a printable barcode that could be
swiped to retrieve the e-ticket at the kiosk.

My wife once tried to use a virtual CC number from Citibank to place
ads in a couple of local newspapers over the phone. It worked for one
and was rejected at the other. I have no idea why, could be a simple
case of incompetence at the newspaper ad office.

The minutes on most Tracfone cards are good for 60 days (some cards
have minutes bundled with 1 year expiration). The expiration of the
minutes on any (unbundled) card can be extended to 1 year for an extra
US$50 (may be online only), or the unused minutes on your phone can be
rolled over on a monthly basis for US$5/mo.

We don't buy peanut butter that often, but I had a craving for a peanut butter-and- chocolate-covered cake (a clone recipe), and we were running low.

The jar of Skippy that I bought a few days ago looked the same as the one I had at home, but the net weight was 16.3 ounces. The one at home was 18 ounces. Upon further examination, I saw that the bottom of the jar is now a concave shape (as if someone had pushed it inward).

At least their web site is updated to show that the size of the jar is 16.3 ounces.

Well, all that fat is bad for us, anyway.

every time the Hungry Man frozen dinner folks change hands they go
through a cycle of leaving out the food...

a few years ago I called and told them that I saw a killer opportunity
for them, since they had the turkey down to two razor thin slices
anyway... I suggested that they could just have turkey slices printed
on the bottom of the tray, then cover it with gravy.

no way in hell would their bean counters spend another 20 cents to
double the turkey serving...and offer actual food for the price.... a
5% increase in the retail price.

accordingly those owners went broke. sold to the nice folks at Vlassic
dill pickels... whom after 5 years of ownership have opted to put
actual food in the box....I was impressed.

My wife used household carpet cleaner on our car floor mats and carpet.
They cleaned out a nasty grease stain and caused no harm to the car at all.
Many products like others have said in this thread are re-labeled haome
products at inflated prices.
