Totally relevant of course. We know who is reading what because of previous
experience. No one jumps in on a thread on these newsgroups because they are
small and most of us, unlike you, know how to edit a post - you god damn
fucking idiot!

That doesn't happen on these newsgroups. No one jumps in on a thread on
these newsgroups because they are small and most of us, unlike you, know how
to edit a post - you god damn fucking idiot!

The Real Crisis That Will Soon Hit the US
Sunday, February 20, 2011 6:06
by Phoenix Capital Research

Forget stocks, the real crisis is coming and its coming fast.

Indeed, it first hit in 2008 though it was almost entirely off the radar
of
the American public. While all eyes were glued to the carnage in the
stock
market and brokerage account balances, a far more serious crisis began to
unfold rocking 30 countries around the globe.

I'm talking about food shortages.

Aside from a few rice shortages that were induced by export restrictions
in
Asia, food received little or no coverage from the financial media in
2008.
Yet, food shortages started riots in over 30 countries worldwide. In
Egypt
people were actually stabbing each other while standing in line for
bread.

Were now seeing the second round of this disaster occurring in Egypt and
other Arab countries today. Thanks to the Feds funny money policies,
food
prices have hit records. And even the Feds phony measures show that
vegetable prices are up 13%!

The developed world, most notably the US, has been relatively immune to
these developments so far. But for much of the developing world, in
which
food and basic expenses consumer 50% of incomes, any rise in food prices
can
have catastrophic consequences.

And thats not to say that food shortages cant hit the developed world
either.

According to Mark McLoran of Agro-Terra, the Earths population is
currently
growing by 70-80 million people per year. Between 2000 and 2012, the
earths
population will jump from six billion to seven billion. Were expected to
add another billion people by 2024. So demanding for food is growing and
its growing fast.

However, supply is falling. Up until the 1960s, mankind dealt with
increased
food demand by increasing farmland. However, starting in the 60s we
began
trying to meet demand by increasing yield via fertilizers, irrigation,
and
better seed. It worked for a while (McLoran notes that between 1975 and
1986
yields for wheat and rice rose 32% and 51% respectively).

However, in the last two decades, these techniques have stopped producing
increased yields due to their deleterious effects: you cant spray
fertilizer and irrigate fields ad infinitum without damaging the land,
which
reduces yields. McLoran points out that from 1970 to 1990, global average
aggregate yield grew by 2.2% a year. It has since declined to only 1.1% a
year. And its expected to fall even further this decade.

Thus, since the 60s weve added roughly three billion people to the
planet.
But weve actually seen a decrease in food output. Indeed, worldwide
arable
land per person has essentially halved from 0.42 hectares per person in
1961
to 0.23 hectares per person in 2002.

Its also worth noting that diets have changed dramatically in the last
30
years.

For example, in 1985 the average Chinese consumer ate 44 pounds of meat
per
year. Today, its more than doubled to 110 pounds. That in of itself is
impressive, but when you consider that it takes 17 pounds of grain to
generate one pound of beef, you begin to see how grain demand can rise
exponentially to population growth with even modest changes to diet.

Make no mistake, agriculture is at the beginning of a major multi-year
bull
market. Weve got rapidly growing demand, reduced production, and decade
low
inventories.

Oh, he does. But he is so well known at it, and is usually closer to
being right than wrong that we just accept this. TM is entertaining, at
least he tries to be. Ed is reasonably civil to anyone he isn't
currently openly hostile with.

It's all amusing. But they are loons and if you get personally
involved in any of the ongoing lunacy then you need to have your head
examined. It's a drive by circus, leave it at that.

You mean this?

After its recent emergence in the thread "How to calculate increase
of home wireless router range?", readers of this group may find
this useful. [based on a post in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage]

Who or What is Rod Speed?

Rod Speed is an entirely modern phenomenon. Essentially, Rod
Speed is an insecure and worthless individual who has discovered
he can enhance his own self-esteem in his own eyes by playing "the
big, hard man" on the InterNet.

Rod is believed to be from Australia.

Rod certainly posts a lot. Why is that?

It relates back to the point about boosting his own self esteem by
what amounts to effectively having a wank in public. Rod's
personality, as exemplified by his posts, means he is practically
unemployable which means he sits around at home all day festering
away and getting worse and worse. This means he posts more and
more try and boost the old failing self esteem. Being unemployed
also means he as a lot of time on his hands to post in he first
place.

But maybe Rod really is a very clever and knowledgable person?

Clever? His posts wouldn't support that theory. As far as being
knowledgable, well, Rod has posted to various aus newsgroups
including invest, comms, and politics. He has posted to all as a
self professed "expert" and flames any and all who disagree with
him. Logically, here's no way any single individual could be
more than a jack of all trades across such a wide spread of
subject matter.

But maybe Rod really is an expert in some areas?

Possibly. However, his "bedside manner" prevents him from being
taken seriously by most normal people. Also, he has damaged his
credibility in areas where he might know what he's on about by
shooting his self in the foot in areas where he does not. For
example, in the case of subject matter such as politics, even a
view held by Albert Einstein cannot be little more than an
opinion and to vociferously denigrate an opposing opinion is
simply small mindedness and bigotry, the kind of which Einstein
himself fought against his whole life.

What is Rod Speed's main modus operandi?

Simple! He shoots off a half brained opinion in response to any
other post and touts that opinion as fact. When challenged, he
responds with vociferous and rabid denigration. He has an
instantly recognisable set of schoolboy put downs limited pretty
much to the following: "Pathetic, Puerile, Little Boy, try
harder, trivial, more lies, gutless wonder, wanker, etc etc".
The fact that Rod has been unable to come up with any new insults
says a lot about his outlook and intelligence.

But why do so many people respond to Rod in turn?

It has to do with effrontery and a lack of logic. Most people
who post have some basis of reason for what they write and when
Rod retorts with his usual denigration and derision they respond
emotionally rather than logically. It's like a teacher in a
class room who has a misbehaving pupil. The teacher challenges
the pupil to explain himself and the student responds with "***
off, Big Nose!" Even thought the teacher has a fairly normal
proboscis, he gets a dent in his self-esteem and might resort to
an emotional repsonse like "yeah? well your *** wouldn't fill a
pop rivet, punk", which merely invites some oneupmanship from the
naughty pupil. Of course, the teacher should not have justified
the initial comment with a response, especially in front of the
class. The correct response was "please report to the
headmaster's office right NOW!"

What is a "RodBot"?

Some respondents in aus.invest built a "virtual Rod" which was
indiscernable from the "real" Rod. Net users could enter an
opinion or even a fact and the RoDBot would tell them they were
pathetic lying schoolboys who should be able to do better or some
equally pithy Rod Speedism.

Are you saying that Rod Speed is a Troll?

You got it!

What is the best way to handle Rod Speed?

Mr. Sherman is too kind by far. I am not. Here it is for all those want to
know something about this ultimate asshole and shithead. RS and TM are
perfectly mated. Let us hope they fuck one another to death.

I see a bit of a problem with bullet trains in USA. If gubmint is
going to give funding to a major public works project, especially a
rail one, especially in or anywhere near any long-established major
cities, labor costs will be huge. The labor is likely to be done by
building-and-construction trades unions at $30-40 per hour plus benefits
including 100%-employer-paid "Cadillac plan" health insurance for the
workers and their families.

What I think is worse still about modern practice by unions - they
fight to reduce productivity, with restrictive work rules and more
productive workers not being allowed to be paid more per hour than less
productive ones of same seniority. Work rules do get so restrictive in
some workplaces that only union carpenters are allowed to drive screws
into building structures for hanging bulletin boards. I remember
Philadelphia having had a city union work rule that city trash truck
drivers and pothole repair crew truck drivers were not allowed to do
work other than driving.

Historically, working class and median wages increased as a result of
increasing productivity. Unions tend to think they can get their
workers (and themselves) more money by decreasing productivity.

Meanwhile, in longer-established major cities, construction unions
work like country clubs. There has been a complaint in Philadelphia
that graduates of Philadelphia's public highschools had a higher rate of
getting into Harvard than of being admitted to these unions. Oh, in
"union towns", usually employers do not do the hiring for construction
work - they go to "union halls" and the union does the hiring.

Several years ago, the Philadelphia metro area was considering
electrifying an existing rail line from Norristown to Reading. (From
downtown Philly to Norristown, electric trains already run.) The cost
was going to be 1 or 2 billion $ merely to electrify about 50-55 miles
of existing railway, to move something like a projected 35,000-40,000
passengers daily! (IIRC)

If I remember these figures correctly, that much taxpayer money can
easily buy a new car and a new bike for every daily passenger, also 2
years of car insurance even in a Philadelphia zip code with being
covered to commute over 20 miles each way by car. Good chance also
enough gasoline to drive an average modern car for 2 years at
USA-average miles-per-year rate.

Heck, $2 billion can buy new cars, new bikes, Philly insurance and
gasoline, plus every-3,000-mile oil changes, once-per-2-years radiator
purge-and-refill, a replacement set of car tires and a dozen bike tires,
a replacement battery (with labor), a replacement water pump (with
labor), 6 replacement bike chains, 2 bike helmets, and a timing belt
replacement and all other scheduled maintenance of a car and a bike for
6 years for 40,000 people!

Gosh, you're lazy -- posting the exact same thing under different
names. Lather, rinse, repeat. Not a good business strategy.

Adding "kleeto" to my killfile.

You know the taboo word... S!@#. Meaning "socialism" is a word tossed
around by politicians and voters alike to attack/punish someone with
ideas like BULLET TRAINS* or BRINGING CAMERAS TO TAME TRAFFIC.

Our failure is to grasp that bullet trains or bikes can alleviate our
congested traffic while cameras can bring some discipline to our wild
drivers. Notice though that bicycles are the least socialist of the
transportation modes and that we don't require a complex
infrastructure to work.

Please spare the S!@# word. ;)

Yeah, people who don't really like to drive. They just want an
automatic Toyota to go to Walmart or around the corner.

I understand some people may actually enjoy driving a VW GTI or Mazda
Miata. Stick shift, please!

I was using the term amateur as the opposite of professional. Those
not receiving payment for their efforts seek renumeration in other
ways. In any case I do not wish to further this discussion at the
present time.

You can do it, too

In the West, there have been stirrings of dissent as the scale of the
economic crisis becomes apparent and the reassurances of the
mainstream media - that good times are just around the corner, come to
sound ever more threadbare. Students, and young people in particular,
have already shaken off the wishful passivity of the previous
generation. But for the most part the outrage and sense of betrayal
have expressed themselves in ways that pose no real threat to the
governing establishment or the opulent minority who control it.

The Tea Party in the United States and Conservatives in Britain
promise change while working to ensure that everything that matters
stays the same. The right in both countries has benefited from the
failure of their centrist opponents to address the fundamental causes
of recession, unemployment and social breakdown. It is as though the
entire political establishment has adopted the stultifying uniformity
of a one-party state. There is a bankruptcy of policy and of principle
that will, perhaps, finally compel us to take matters into our own
hands.

In the presidential campaign of 2008, Barack Obama never tired of
telling voters they were the change they had been looking for. The
people of Tunisia and Egypt have turned a clever slogan into an
undeniable fact. They did not wait for permission to take action. If
we want another world we must all learn from them.

Can we look beyond the stereotypes offered by our media, and see that
the Egyptians and the Tunisians are now daring us to be free?

Yes, we can.

My eyeglass frames are pretty old yet I still like them
as they are made of titanium and take abuse well. An
still stylish

The only problem is the hard plastic coating at the ear
pieces is breaking and flaking off.

Instead of new frames.... where can I take my current
frames and have them refurbished by coating the
earpieces with new plastic? Is that even possible?

Yeah, mine too, tho I doubt the metal is titanium, dont recall that it was.

And mine are by far the most comfortable I have ever
had too, and I have two pairs of the same frame too.

Dont have that problem with mine.

It must be possible because they were clearly made that way initially.

You should be able to superglue the pieces, tho thats not as good as new plastic.

Havent noticed anyone offering to do new plastic.

You might try posting in the modelling groups, maybe
some of the modeling has something similar somewhere.

Seems as if these people are uncomfortable with their own mortality.
They can not deal with the idea the world will continue long after
they are gone. As an example, Jim Jones of Jonestown infamy was dying
of cancer when he ordered his flock to kill themselves.

Where do you buy inexpensive shoe insoles, like Dr Scholls insoles or
something even more durable?
They cost 5+ tokens at a pharmacy so it gets expensive if you have a
lot of shoes.

Is Roddie more on TM's side than ED's side?

Why did Roddie need take a side in a Usenet battle between TM and ED?
I somewhat regret now having posted in favor of 1 and not the other
of these 2 that hyave gained themselves some unpopularity...

In light of the maybe-15-plus-year-old apparently-largely-still-
current FAQ on the infamous R.S., I could actually decrease my
disfavor to E.D. That is because R.S. has (as I experience this) a
great history of apparently liking to irritate people, especially ones
who work for a living.

Except that Rod Speed is resistant to emotionally maturing, to extent of
resisting learning at least some things even the hard way.

There is a FAQ on Rod Speed, which I think is 16-plus years old. Yet, I
think Rod Speed experienced emotional maturation of at most 2-3 years
between that long ago and now.
