I doubt whether the water contains any measurable protein.
Draining might be a good idea if you want to limit sodium. Use a big
strainer and "wash" the tuna and dump in a container. Most of the
sodium will be gone.
If you want to save the water and don't own a cat, you could fill your
half full toothpaste containers as you have in the past. Be careful
boarding the plane, though, as an inspector may think something is
fishy.

No, I pour it into a bucket in my kitchen, which later gets
dumped into my compost bin.

Drinking it sounds kind of gross. OTOH, maybe I should put it
into the water for rice or pasta.

"Chicken of the Sea chunk light tuna in water." Besides tuna and water,
the can also contains "vegetable broth (contains soy), salt." The soy and
salt are the reasons why I push down on the cut lid and push out and drain
as much of the liquid as possible.

Yeah, I squeeze out the water too because it tastes too salty and also I
don't like squishy tuna.

I sometimes eat the tuna plain, or more often, will add mayonnaise,
celery, onion flakes, cheese, and tomato to make a lumpy tuna sandwich.

I don't have exact proportions handy, but I drain it and then mix in cream
cheese, cocktail sauce, onion flakes and parsley till it's a nice
spread-like consistency. Good alternative to standard tuna salad.

My favorite use for canned tuna is in a salad that has equal portions
of diced white onion, celery and red pepper, plus a can of drained
chickpeas. I usually dress it with olive oil and balsamic vinegar,
with a little cumin mixed in. Yum! Very filling and pretty healthy
too.

That's exactly what I do. I wasn't aware of the soy part as its
presence would cause throat and tongue irritation which I didn't
detect. The recipies given in other posts sound really delicious but
verboten to me. I do garnish my tuna with diced deep fried shallots
and diced deep fried garlic. These are available in twist top plastic
jars from the Chinese grocery shops. There is no residual oil in them
and they are as light as as dry as bacon bits and used as much the
same way but has far more flavor and aroma. Bacon bits are made from
soy protein and something I avoid.

I give the water or oil to my dogs, on their dry food. They are attracted
to the scent of tuna as much as any cats.

I add mayo, sweet pickle relish, olives, and cheese; sometimes a bit of
spicy mustard, for a quick tuna salad.

place (it's fair, he almost always uses a cell) but I need one for the
internet.
What's the cheapest phone service? Is there anything in the $9-$12 range
for reliable bare-bones not-per-hour service?
I live in the north texas/DFW area.

Not every Phone Company will offer DSL-only service. DSL is a service
designed to piggyback on POTS (Plain old Telephone Service). If phone
companies started doing this on a regular basis, people would start
canceling their hardwire phone service in droves and the revenue would
tank.

The regular phone service pays for the continuing costs associated
with keeping a hardwire copper line connected to your telephone
central office. DSL is just an add-on to an existing line.

Among your options...

Verizon FIOS (fibre) or equivalent - Fiber connections are only
available in small, usually generally upscale areas of the US. It's
worthwhile to lobby for it, but it can take years to install.

Comcast or other cable co. cable modem - Usually fairly cheap, often
comes bundled with other services - Unknown bandwidth limits - You
share a network with your neighbors.

Hughes Net - 2 way internet from a satellite. - There will be
bandwidth limits and the service has a short response delay due to the
far away satellites. Can be expensive.

Dial UP - local ISP

Wi-Fi Max - Wireless service available in some rural and urban areas.
Free in some places.

In general, a wired connection is going to be better, and more secure
than anything wireless.

Most likely there is something in, or close to that price range. The
phone companies usually offer (perhaps they are required to, by law?)
a minimal service to provide access to phone service for low-income
customers, but you can get this less expensive plan just by asking for
it...the catch of course is that most people don't know to ask for
it. Last I know, (at least in my area) this sort of plan included a
handful of calls in the fee, and any calls above and beyond that
number were charged either per minute or per call. I think this sort
of plan is called "lifeline service" or something

I don't know if they will allow DSL with this sort of plan or not.

Call the local phone company and ask.

Without knowing where in the world you live, its hard to say. Try
googling or asking friends, neighbors, family and co-workers who live in
your area for a recommendation.

As I am searching through the google groups it is interesting that
there are so many post on candles and some great discounts for those
who are selling. I really didn't really expect to see so much
information regarding this topic. Personally every room in my house is
full of candles, they are a great way to set a mood or sometimes I
just light them all up and relax in the calming tranquility. I have
enjoyed reading your post and will return when I have more time to

It might have been Dominon. I think Dominion uses a green maple leaf in
thier logo here in Ontario. Dominion used to be controlled by the A and P
company out of New Jersey but Dominon and A and P in Canada are not 100%
Canadian owned. You might try A and P in Ohio if you got them there.

These are very good. I quit eating peanuts in the shell because they
were all crap - rancid.
My wife took a chance and bought these, and the second bag is as good
as the first.
Maybe the peanut farmers are out of the 5 year old peanuts they've

nuts from a local nuthouse. They begin to lose flavor after a few days.

I buy 5 lb bags of Hoodys peanuts in the shell at Costco for a similar
price. One of my favorite snacks while watching TV. Having to pick
them out of the shell slows down my consumption rate. :-)

Among the very few snacks I take is the hockey puck sized cans of Tuna
in water. I have food sensitivities and can't eat canned fish in
sauce or oil of any kind. I have been draining the water thus far and
eat only the meat. It occured to me that since the flesh had been
cooked and soaked in that water since canning the water would have a
lot of protein in it. Throwing away that water seems wasteful. Is
draining a common practice? Do you also eat/drink that water along
with the meat?

Cat treat: if you have a cat. My guys go nuts when they get it.

The only other thing I can think of is turning into some kind of fish
stock, but I've never run across that being done yet.

I also dribble a little of what I drain off and pour it over a handful of
dry cat food. Our male cat thinks he's died and gone to kitty heaven when I
offer it to him. Our female smells it, and promptly tries to bury it.
