Somehow it seems like eating less should cost less, but I always end
up spending more when I'm dieting. I just read this article:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/4096-need-diet-programs/

It talks about how diets can fit every budget. But what are your tips
for losing weight on a tight budget?

Thanks!

Eat less and wonder about your soul, it is The Universe playing tricks with
your stomach in that mean time the most frugal answer is to protect your
vote, that is if you live in a society that embraces democracy

I agree. Starch is cheap calories but they don't satisfy for long. Fat
is pretty cheap calories, if you don't mind having a heart attack later.
I would like to hear about some cheap sources of lean protein.

Spend less on starches / sugary snacks & get more exercise.

London broil (boneless beef shoulder) was on sale here last week for
$1.99/lb - about as lean a piece of meat as you'll get. Great slow
grilled with a teriyaki marinade, even on the third day in a steak
sandwich with a touch of BBQ sauce.

Excellent if sliced very thin, across the grain.

Split chicken breast is on sale here at $0.99/lb this week (3 lbs or more).

In a sense, yes. Americans are not reproducing enough to maintain the
population demographics that our economy has always relied on (though
they are unsustainable in the long run - the population can't grow
forever). Increasingly, we want to have careers instead of kids and
spend all the income on ourselves. But that doesn't work. We need a
next generation to mow our lawns, harvest our crops, flip hamburgers,
and support us in old age. Social security reduced the personal
incentive to have kids as a retirement investment, for better or worse.
So here we are, outsourcing childbearing and childrearing to people who
will do it cheaper, just like picking fruit or laying tile. From an
evolutionary perspective it's surprising.

Thoughts

- Oatmeal is a high glycemic carb. If you are not into that sort of thing,
steel cut is your savior. It stays in your gut keeping you from hunger
longer too. Crock pot it over night. Freeze the rest. Microwave frozen with
some water and it is as good as new.

- Around here eggs are even cheaper at the bulk store. But watch the store
flier, every now and again they practically GIVE them away. If you are not
into the yolk, make deviled eggs with hummus. Yum! Homemade hummus is
ding-dang cheap also.

Well overall I cannot necessarily agree with this list of "healthy" food.

it takes a special kind of idiot to poison one's self with water,
however, it's quite rare. Most of them drown in the shower.

Let your husband go to the store! GASP! Not.

Food shopping takes some time for this family. Fliers are my godsend. Meat
and produce are based on the flier, and the freezer stocked accordingly.

Freezers are the best. We have numerous muffin tins, not for making boat
loads of muffins, but to freeze things in small portions. Stock, soup,
pureed veggies to sneak into the casserols so the kids dont know it, steel
cut oats, cooked ground beef. You can always take out more than one muffin
cup worth up to as much as you need.

About $100/wk for a family of 4.

Ribeye for $2.99!?! Oh my goodness. You can't get that here. Did you count
the cost of planting the back yard veggies in there?

And when boneless breast in on sale for $1.87/lb, holy cow do we live in
heaven! I cannot even eat one whole one, so that goes some distance.

Pasta is dirt cheap too.

It's $5.98 lb for a 15-18 pound piece. We cut that into 1½ inch thick
steaks, or about one lb per "slice". Once "slice" feeds the two of us for a
meal and I usually have enough of mine left over for a bleu cheese chop
salad the next day. What do you pay? Since we grow all the veggies from
seeds we spend about $10 a year for veggies, so it's less than 1 cent a
meal.

Our local market usually runs boneless breasts for $1.89 lb. on Wednesdays,
but last week they had them at $1.29. I spent $60 and it took quite a while
to pack it all up into the freezer!

- No fancy cleaning stuff. A can of comet and a spray bottle of vinegar and
water.

- Shop meat and produce from the stores' fliers. Buy LOTS of the loss
leaders and freeze them.

- I actually maintain a price book sicne I cannot remember anything about
the price of stuff.

Hi,

We will be remodeling our home soon and eventually replacing the
berber rug that is in place now. We actually wanted to do the remodel
sooner and as a result have been pretty neglectful of the rug thinking
it would be replaced sooner. It is in pretty rough shape (just normal
traffic dirt and grime, no oil-based stains) and certain areas might
need a scrubber machine.

I thought we could rent a scrubber at Lowes and then schedule a
professional to do the hot water extraction just afterwards.

If this sounds workable can anyone recommend a moderately priced
general purpose spot remover and shampoo for a rug destined for the
trash in about four months.

I was going to call on Stanley Steamer for the steam cleaning but
some of the comments make me worry that perhaps the care won't be
taken to get as much water back out of the rug as possible which could
be a problem with berber.

It is a small house (3 bed, hallway, and family room) with about 1000
sq ft of rug in So. Cal.

Thanks for the advice,

Steve

Dry Chem only. But, I'd forget it since it's out of there anyway.
Save your money and go out for a lovely dinner.

???Why would you go through the hassle and expense to clean something you'll
be tossing in 4 months? SOOO not worth it.

That was my thinking as well. Just vacuum well and maybe some spot
cleaning (or heck, throw a small area rug on top to cover it).
Reminds me, I should set up some appointments to replace the 30 y/o
original carpets in my house, they're looking a bit worn.

I take the opposite approach... I (almost) never close my windows,
and have no A/C. :)

He claims to save $60-70 (including $15? in gas costs) by driving 90
miles, but ignores the wear and tear costs on his car. It's easy to
make a profit or show savings when one ignores his costs.

At least half that savings is fictitious.

Is there any wonder why gas prices are so high? Hint - it's primarily
ignorant drivers who only consider the cost of gas as their cost of driving.

Granted, he appears to have saved $30-35, but considering his ignorance
of costs, I question if the pricing difference is as great as claimed.
I did a Stop & Shop cost comparison about two years ago and found
Walmart did have a 30% advantage on cost for a $100 basket of goods I
typically purchase, but certainly not the 50% claimed in the article
($150 in goods with about $75 - 80 in savings). Then again, that could
depend significantly on his basket of goods. On the other hand, they
don't mention if there is a regular Walmart within a few mile, where
much of his savings would also likely be realized without driving 90
miles (regular Walmarts do carry much of the staple products that make
up a bulk of typical shopping lists)

Don't confuse the savings issue by bringing up costs.

Silly me, I figured that people here would realize that if you have a
medical condition that says one of these foods isn't healthy, you would
know not to eat it.

Seriously, *of course* not all the foods are healthy for everyone. And
vegans won't eat eggs, vegetarians won't eat sardines, and Mormons won't
drink coffee. But the list is to provide suggestions that intelligent
people can decide whether to use or not.

Sheesh.

You cannot assume intelligent people don't make stupid decisions.
Eating too much of some of what's on the list can be like eating
poison.

Its impossible to make specific recommendations about this problem
without the slightest idea of where in the world you live or the
construction of your home. You and your husband should probably talk
with neighbors to see what they recommend, as presumably they are in the
same situation as you. You also might be better off consulting with a
specialist in that area who knows how to check for these things. Ask
your neighbors for a recommendation.

Attic fan to lower temperature of attic and more attic insulation to
keep the heat from coming into the house. Close downstair vents so
all cool air goes through upstair vents. I doubt cold air is leaking
out up there since cold air drifts lower and hot air raises.
Downstairs are usually cooler than upstairs. You might have to get
some kind of vent fans for the upstair fans to help draw the cool air
upstairs if closing the downstair vents don't work.

In general, a single AC won't properly cool the second story of a two
story house. Cold air is denser, and sinks. Hot air is less dense,
so any hot air from below rises to replace it. This is the exact
opposite of the positive effects of heating a first floor. When
heating, the second story can be more comfortable and secure than the
first one, hence the Brit nobles tending to live on the second floor,
or the French living on the second floor but calling it the first
floor, the use of basements, etc.. You'll likely need a second AC
just for the upper floors if the situation is as bad as you describe.

we have been having lots of forest fires nearby and I went to get my
oxygen tank
refilled , but they won't w/o a prescription.
Seems like you should be able to buy O2. Medical grade. There is not
such restriction on welding O.
but, down the street you can pony up to a Oxygen Bar and get scented air.
How pure , I dunno.
Why is O2 regulated?

Oh well, it works as well as masterbation. Masterbating don't cost
$20 unless you need the aid of viagra and online porn.

FYI- mastUrbation is the correct spelling. Just in case you're doing it
wrong as well as spelling it incorrectly?

Well, I guess teacher should have been teaching me spelling instead of

From: A Veteran

Dear President Bush,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I
have
learned a great deal from you and understand why you would propose and
support a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. As you
said
"in the eyes of God marriage is based between a man a woman." I try to
share
that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to
defend
the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that
Leviticus
18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination... End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements
of
God's Laws and how to follow them.

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and
female,
provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine
claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you
clarify?
Why can't I own Canadians?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in
Exodus
21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for
her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her
period of menstrual uncleanness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I
tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a
pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is, my neighbors. They
claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2.
clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill
him
myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an
abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality.
I
don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev.21:20 states that I may ! not approach the altar of God if I have
a
defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my
vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle- room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair
around
their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27.
How
should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me
unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different
crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of
two
different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to
curse
and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the
trouble of
getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we
just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with
people
who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy
considerable
expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and
unchanging.

Well, that's not good.

As others have pointed out, your numbers are crazy.

Now, a fan pulling in cooler air at night is a good thing. But it is
rarely sufficient. Only you know how fast it takes your house to heat up.

I'd like to point out that fans are big energy users and leaving one
on does use energy. One of the big features of Energy Star ACs is that
they have a mode to cycle the fan off when the compressor is not
running. That saves a lot of energy, from not having the fan run
continuously.

Also, because it is cooler at night, your window AC will take less
energy to cool. It should cycle off much more.

Ideally, you'll want a mix of both ventilation and AC. But, if I had
to choose only one it would be AC.

In a poorly insulated home, the best way to save money is insulation.
You may also wish to do something with your windows if you have a lot of
solar gain. And do something with your attic, if your attic temps are high.

I've dramatically cut my cooling cost by adding insulation (all the
way around) and by switching to Energy Star ACs with a good EER. I'm
also much more comfortable.

It sounds like you have central air. The new outdoor units have much
higher SEERs than the old. I believe 16 is now common and 19s are out
there. You may wish to consider an upgrade there but the payback would
be multiple years.

There's some caveats on high SEER, particularly in very hot climates.

Article about driving 90 miles round trip to buy groceries. And yes,
the savings takes into account fuel costs. I used to see this a lot
when I was young at the base commissary. Retirees would drive in once a
month from long distances and buy all their non-perishables at much
cheaper prices than off-vase.

Word. When my wallet was stolen and I had to go to the SS office to
get a
new card, I was absolutely dumbstruck by what I saw in the waiting
room. I
was the only person speaking English and the only woman there with no
children. My Spanish is a bit rusty (haven't lived abroad since the
1980s),
but I was able to figure out that most of the people waiting were
never
employed, possibly undocumented, but were receiving all sorts of
bennies.
It was apparent that most of them spoke no English at all. Note that I
live
in rural upstate NY, not a city. Outside of the SS office I have never
heard
anyone speaking anything other than English. That includes people
working at
local gas station quik e marts, stores, and the Thruway rest stop. Of
course, that includes only people who work, not those who stay home
and pump
out babies as their chosen "profession". Once again, "your tax dollars
at
work".

That's what they say, but one thing I noticed was that because you can
fit more clothes in the wash, it took longer to dry. I suppose if I
washed the same average sized load I used to that might be true. Even
better would be to semi-dry the clothes (I can briefly hang mine in
the very warm garage) before using the dryer on them to finish drying
and clear wrinkles.

Well, even if it takes longer to dry "a load", if you are drying more
clothes it still may be saving you money on the utility bills if the
energy use per item/lb/unit is lower. Or maybe not, particularly if
you are using timed drying and continue running the dryer longer than
it needs.

We got a new dryer with a moisture sensor at the same time we got the
front-load washer, so it is hard to say which caused the drop in the
electric bill. Probably a combination of both.

I had to replace a washer a few years ago; I bought the
second lowest end model Whirlpool that Lowes had. (The
lowest end did not have a bleach dispenser.)

Looks like you have to go to third from lowest to get
the bleach dispenser, now:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=161966-46-WTW5540ST&lpage=none

I've had good luck with mine so far.

For things like towels, I re-run the spin cycle to get a
bit more water out.

The dealer was yanking your chain...

If they were worth more after 2 months use, you could go into business
buying a new one then selling it 2 months later. Then buy anther new one,
use it for 2 months and resell it again. Looking at the numbers posted
above (buy for 15k, sell for 21k) you would be looking at an income of 6k
every 2 months -- 12k a year for doing pretty much nothing.

and what moron would pay an additional 6k for a slightly used car when a
an identical new model is sitting right next to it for 6000 less?

Wouldn't that qualify as "instant gratification" though? If they have
a used one to drive off the lot vs having to wait 3-6 months on a
waiting list, some (not saying it really makes sense) would opt for
the premium to have it now.

They wouldn't be a moron. They would simply be someone who wanted the
car and because they can't do what you described. If you placed your
order today it would take 14 months to get your new Smartcar. You simply
can't walk in and buy one. There is *no* dealer stock. All cars are
already sold.

I think the guy should thank whomever was willing to buy his fluffed up
truck at 3x market value.

I have a number of friends who are involved in car dealerships etc and
they all say you can barely give fluffed up trucks away. My one friend
said that he recently went to a repo auction of vehicles repossessed by
a mega bank. He said most everything offered was 1-2 year old fluffed up
trucks such as the escalade. He said the minimums were around $9,000 and
there were no bidders. He said they were normal vehicles and none were
trashed.

The US model is different than what was imported into Canada. My one
friend did check about bringing one in and it was spendier than a grand.

I did see all of the various crash test footage and it is definitely a
safe car. I drove my buddies a couple hundred miles and it is not
uncomfortable. The car is solidly built. The transmission is an
electronic manual as used on other Daimler designs. There is nothing
wrong just a different feel when it shifts. Anyone who is used to a
normal "automatic" could draw interesting conclusions if they didn't
understand the arrangement in the Smartcar.

My buddy already picked up snow tires for his. Everyone says they
perform really well in snow just like the old VW bugs because the engine
weight is over the rear wheels.

The car being imported into the US is exactly the same model as being
imported into Canada today. But you are correct that the initial one
that Canada got, which was a turbo diesel will not be imported into
the US. In their infinite wisdom MB decided to make it one model for
both Canada and the US and actually stoppped importing the diesel into
Canada until the US was ready for the gas. So Smart cars became scarce
for a while in Canada, though most stores didn't run out completely.

The critics I was referring to are automobile journalists. Their
comments on the tranny were that there was a significant lag between
shifts. I'm sure you can get used to it. But these guys are plenty
uised to driuving everythingf SVTs to sequential shift boxes. Everyone
has commented. Perhaps they are comparing to the excellent manuals and
automatics in the Yaris and Fit.

We have a two-story house, and one a/c unit. The upstairs rooms are terribly
hot in the summertime. It doesn't even feel like cold air is coming out of
the vents if the temperatures go above 85F outside. Fans do NOT help. We
were told to check in the attic to see if the cold air is leaking out
somewhere up there. When the temps are getting up to 100F, it's just about
unbearable upstairs. Does anyone have any ideas? Saturday my husband is
going to go into the attic to check for leaks.

I have tried keeping the doors closed upstairs, and also keeping them all
open. Neither makes a difference. And I do block the windows from letting
the sun through. btw the windows are new, double-paned, supposed to be good
at keeping the air from leaking in/out.

Can you afford a swamp cooler? Mine is set in the middle of
my upper floor. Works great.

Do you use your fans to pull the hot air out of the upper floor to
the outside
