I would think there are plenty of programs that will wipe the boot drive
without doing anything special. The OP should just look for free disk
wipe programs. The other alternative is to just smash the drive with
a hammer, if it's a real old PC and of no use anymore.

I live in the U.S. and would like to get Spectrum (the cable company)
Internet and Voice plans.

As for the Voice plan, Spectrum offers Spectrum Voice International
(SVI) that would allow unlimited calls in 70 countries or
low-per-minute rates in the rest of the world.

Back when people had a traditional telephone landline (copper wires),
one could choose a long-distance provider of his choice. That would
also include international calls. Typically such providers charged
lower rates than the telco (such as AT&T).

Does anybody know if such choice exists when getting a Voice plan
through Spectrum? Spectrum peoples told me NO!, but I'd like to make
sure that I am not given wrong info...

You could use one of those prepaid calling cards though, if it's less
expensive than Spectrum's rate for where you need to call. They were
less than most carriers back 25 years ago, IDK how they compare now.
It is another step, but if it saves enough, could be worth it.

This may be of some help. It explains how to format or wipe your pc clean.
Read the whole article for the steps you need to take.

I can't imagine any service like that who is using a long distance carrier
anymore.

They all use some form of VOIP (voice over IP), meaning the internet.

I'm pretty sure the majors (at&t, sprint) aren't even installing copper
anymore. It's all (or nearly all) VOIP.

And the politicians who are complaining about the housing crisis are the
same ones who gave incentives to companies to relocate there to provide
high-paying jobs...

AND those same politicians don't have the gonads to force developers to
actually include sufficient lower-cost housing in their urban
development plans. They will only force the developers to pay an offset
fee, which the politicians then waste on other stuff without actually
developing any lower-cost housing.

AND in the few cases where lower-cost (i.e., subsidized) housing IS
developed, the income levels to qualify are either non-existent, not
enforced, or too high to allow the target population to get in.

And who is supposed to pay to make housing affordable?

Answer: The already overburdened taxpayer.

Why is it that groups of people feel entitled to force other people to pay
for their endless demands?

And the striking Chicago teachers aren't working for starvation wages and
benefits.

"Meanwhile, taxpayers recognize that Chicago's teacher salaries, the median
of which is more than $78,000, are high compared with other big cities, and
the school district is on shaky fiscal ground."

"Under the current Chicago union contract, beginning teachers make a base
salary of just over $56,000 a year, while the most senior teachers with
extra credentials make $108,242 a year."

The high costs aren't the only problems. The homeless are all over
the place, taking dumps in the streets. In Seattle, I see the council

Typically there is a wireless icon at the bottom of the desktop screen
in the system tray. Clicking on it brings up a box with the wifi manager.
But you'd think he's seeing that, if he can see the list of networks.
All the ones I've seen, when you can see the list of networks there is
a refresh button or scan or something that scans and updates the list.
If nothing else, rebooting would do it.

It's also possible that somehow the network got marked to ignore or
something, so that it won't show up, but seems unlikely.

I have been trying to access wifi but kept being told that I had the wrong password.

I subsequently realized that I indeed was typing in the wrong passwork. When I tried to access it again with the correct password, the name of the wifi provider I was supposed to connect to disappeared from the list of providers.

Has that happened to you? Has that provider's name been deleted because it looked suspicious that I was trying repeatedly to access it with the wrong password?

Am I supposed to wait a day or 2 for that provider's name to reappear of the list?

I don't have a clue. My wi-fi stays on 24/7 and it's a secure setting so
no one can access it unless I give them the password. That ain't happening.
But I do see my neighbors all around me networks but since I don't have their
passwords I can't access their signal. But I have my own so no need to use
their wi-fi.

A problem with getting an answer to that is that most people have email
accounts for a long time and won't remember what info was required when
they signed up and it may have changed since then. You might get lucky
and someone who doesn't have a phone can tell you what email they use.
Hard to imagine living without any phone today. If you want low cost
VOIP, Ooma is only ~$5 a month, unlimited calls. it's "free', the $5 is
regulatory fees, taxes, etc. You do have to buy
the VOIP box, which you can find on Ebay used for less than $50, used,
last time I looked.

Daniel, 36, makes $270,000 a year as a corporate lawyer in Manhattan. But you'd never guess it if you saw his shabby apartment.

The graduate of an elite law school, who declined to share his last name for privacy reasons, lives across the Hudson, in New Jersey, to avoid NYC taxes. There's no TV, just books that Daniel picks up for about 50 cents apiece at a local church. He makes rice and beans in his slow cooker. An armoire holds just five cheap suits. When they tear, as they do "every six months" or so, he sews them back up. In the winter, he doesn't even turn the heat on. "I mostly put on a bunch more layers," he tells The Post.

It's because I'm a frugal consumer.

Although I sometimes feel like a dinosaur.

You can be frugal with a cell phone but no need to be a miser. Smart phones
can be bought with 1500 minutes talk and text time for around $100. I'm not a
cell phone user by anyone's imagination but I upgraded to a smart phone last
year and renewed my service contract back at the first of September for $49.95
plus tax and still have over 1500 minutes remaining on my phone.

You're a good salesperson.

I certainly know who to go to the next time I want to buy a white elephant.

No, I just know there are options out there instead of paying a monthly bill
to a provider when a cell phone is rarely used. I did LOTS of research before
ever buying a cell phone many years ago. I had a bit over 300 minutes from
my other cell phone that rolled over into the account of the new smart phone
last year. I turn my cell phone on the average of once a month.

I'm not trying to talk you into anything; I'm letting you know there are options
for cell phones other than a monthly contract with a landline provider such as
AT&T or Verizon. You're the one who has no phone but then want to know how to
set up an e-mail account without a phone.

I guess when you need an ambulance or a fire truck or the police you'll
just lean out the window and scream for one.

People try to help you but evidently we're not giving you the answers you seem
to want. My job is done here; do your own research and solve your problem
by yourself.
