The Frugalwoods — real names Liz Willard Thames and Nate Thames — are a Millennial couple who did the nine-to-five non-profit thing in Cambridge, Massachusetts for several years before realizing they were trying to "buy their way into happiness" and deciding they had to break free. How? By retiring early, of course! So they squirreled away the majority of their income — in 2014, they saved an impressive 71 percent — cut back on things like eating out at restaurants and taking public transportation to work, and started a blog about their lives.

They bought a four-bedroom house in Vermont and began a leisurely new life on 66 acres of woods, streams, and apple trees. I heard someone other than myself say the word frugal out loud for the first time in two decades yesterday. And he said it about me.

What if buying a country house with its own apple orchard were as easy as giving up artisanal cheese and pre-sliced carrots for a while? What if you were able to retire in your thirties by simply living more "intentionally" and investing in low-fee index funds? If all that sounds peachy, then you've got to meet the Frugalwoods.

First quarter:

By SUSAN B. GARLAND
MARCH 23, 2018

Sarah Peveler lacks a support system that many older people count on: their adult children.

But Ms. Peveler, 71, who is divorced and childless, said she was determined not to let fear of an uncertain future get the best of her.

To help avoid the potential perils of a solitary old age, Ms. Peveler is carrying out a multipronged, go-it-alone plan. A key part of it was to find a small community where she could make friends and walk nearly everywhere, without worrying about the hazards of ice and snow.

A friend from North Carolina suggested that she look at Tarboro, in the eastern part of the state, about 75 miles from Raleigh. The city of 11,400 filled the bill, and she moved there several years before retiring in 2012 from her job as an executive at a Philadelphia-based nonprofit.

"At some point, I am not going to be able to drive," she said. From her downtown home, "I can walk to Main Street, the library, the church, the drugstore and the Piggly Wiggly."

Ms. Peveler paid $135,000 cash for a one-story house with longevity in mind. One of the three bedrooms, she said, can be converted into an apartment if she needs a caretaker to move in. She is thinking of checking out assisted-living facilities in case she ever needs more than home care. (There is a family history of dementia, she said.) Several mini-strokes caused some cognitive impairment, so her doctor monitors her regularly.

With a brother on the West Coast and no nieces or nephews to step in, Ms. Peveler has, through her church and several civic activities, developed a surrogate family of friends and neighbors, many of them several decades younger, who keep tabs on her. For added protection, she signed up for a service, EyeOn App, that signals three friends if she does not reply within a half-hour to scheduled alerts on her cellphone.

"Once, I didn't respond, and everyone called me," she said. "My next-door neighbor sent her daughter over."

Although no plan is foolproof, Ms. Peveler said she was as confident as she could be. "I know people would have my back," she said.

Ms. Peveler is among a growing number of older Americans who are unmarried and childless. By 2030, about 16 percent of women 80 to 84 will be childless, compared with about 12 percent in 2010, according to a 2013 report by AARP...

Hello everyone. I'm not totally sure if this post is in the correct
place so mods/admins feel free to move it :) I've got a question about
income tax - I earn (gross) £31,000 a year, and after tax 'this
calculator' (http://after-tax.co.uk/?income=31000) says I should make
£24,360 after tax and NI - however last year I made only £22,000 (same
wages, no bonuses or other tax related stuff coming out) after tax. What
should I do about this? I haven't received a tax return or any notice
from HMRC so a bit confused. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should
do?? Thanks!

So do all onion-variants. The guy who gave me the leek said that if you
just cut it off at ground level it will produce more little leeks from
the roots. If I ever plant any I'll remember that.

It is my understanding you have to make HUGE bucks in order to qualify for
one and you must have A+++ credit rating. Not 100% sure but I think the
yearly fee to have this card is astronomical and you have regular interest
charges like other cards.

It is a prestige card and once you lose your black card rating, that's it;
you can never get another one. But I agree with Bob F, "it looks awesome"
is a lame reason for getting one.

"The flesh has fibers..." As many as the Tommies? Those are very
nearly inedible. We get a lot of those, and only occasionally the Kents
which are much better. Big AND good would be really nice.

We drove to Mexico for the 1991 eclipse below Mazatlan. On the way we
bought a flat of mangos, and every once we would stop for a mango break.
Fortunately we had brought far too much water with us...

Lived down there for about 20 years. Malabar spinach is quite good and handles
heat well. With the nematodes, we found the way to garden veggies was in
containers (homemade eearthboxes). Wander a Home Depot plant area and you'll
see some square one marketed as garden boxes or some such..

The fun in Florida was the various fruiting trees - orange, grapefruit, lemon,
lime, mangoes (keet is really good), papaya (but bag them because of the bugs),
and with insanely heavy mulch and a protected spot - bananas.

Keet? Is that an offshoot of Kent? Those are the only ones that we get
around here that are worth eating. I planted a seed a couple of years
ago, but the plant is less than a foot high now :-(

We had a high-average warm winter this year but nothing
record-setting. Cold finally took out the eggplants and most of the
peppers. In a bit of a "march surprise" chilly spell now that has the
remaining peppers a bit unhappy.

>I gave up the big garden here because it just wasn't financially practical. I

I still garden in raised beds and containers. Trying to amend and
maintain the native sand is a bit like rolling a boulder up a hill....
Our garden is small enough to manage, equipped with drip irrigation
(which, btw, has required far less maintenance than I feared at the
outset). Except for alfalfa and seeds, I don't have to bring in much
from the outside.
I try to grow the most of what we eat the most of because that's
where most of the money would be spent. I live in a climate suitable
for year 'round gardening but not suitable for food crops that need a
long cool season such as broccoli (although, some years rapini does
well), cauliflower, crisphead lettuce and, most years, carrots.

>Trying shallots this year, as the prices in the store are always outrageous for
>them.
Never have grown those. I grow fairly strongly flavored piquant
cooking onions, a pot of perennial chives and frequent successive
plantings of some generic off-the-rack onions for tender "green" onion
tops. Managed to provide "almost" a year's supply of onions for the
kitchen in 2017 but not likely to do as well this year and many of what
I do have will be late.

I dunno, she sounds more jerky to me. Why take a chance on a freezer explosion
when you can have jerky that fizzes in your mouth?

The zinnias, nasturtiums and cherry tomatoes just popped up. The basil
from last year seems to be sprouting new growth (still trying to flower,
but maybe it will give that up soon), A few flowers on the potted
apricot tree and lots of buds on the potted orange tree. Life is good.

Leeks might be nice. Somebody gave me some maybe 40 years ago, and I
keep thinking I should plant some...

Hmmm. My various starts are either still on the grow shelves or had to be taken
in because of frost. Tradition is that one can't plant safely here until the
week of Easter, and it has been true every year I have paid attention.

I gave up the big garden here because it just wasn't financially practical. I
now grow in containers on the back deck, where the deer and groundhog can't
reach.

Trying shallots this year, as the prices in the store are always outrageous for
them.
