// Sorry for cross-posting

My name is Ji Soo Yi, and I am a Ph.D. student in the Health Systems
Institute at Georgia Tech. Our research team and I have developed a
tool to help people choose a nursing home. I wrote this message in
this newsgroup since I believe that some of people here might be
interested in this project.

As many of you already know, choosing a nursing home is an emotion-
laden, difficult decision that can be often made under enormous stress
and time pressure. To make matters worse, there are so many things to
consider in choosing a good one among so many nursing homes. I noticed
that many people were misguided and ended up choosing a bad one for
their loved ones even though there is so much information on the
Internet these days.

Thus, we have developed a tool to help people crunch numbers and
information, so that they can make a better decision. We tried to use
some cutting-edge interactive technologies, called information
visualization and make the tool easy to use. However, we have focused
too much on new technologies, so we might fail to see the perspectives
of the real decision makers. Thus, we need your help. Please let us
have your opinions and insights, so that we can make this tool better.

In order to collect your opinions more effectively, we made the
following separate website:

http://nhc.hsi.gatech.edu/

This website has a couple of surveys to collect your experiences and
stories about how to choose the best nursing home. It also has a small
experiment that allows you to experience the tool and let us have your
feedback on how it works for you. Anybody who has previous experience
in choosing a nursing home, or anticipates having a need to do so in
the future is welcomed. It will take about 30 minutes to complete the
surveys and experiment.

Further more, if you complete the surveys and experiment, we would
like to provide you with a user account that allows you to use the
current version of our tool, which has the following complete
features.

1) An interactive nursing home locators: you can find nursing homes in
your neighborhoods with a zip code or street address.
2) Quality information of about 16,000 nursing homes: the website
provides the quality information of real nursing homes in the US.
3) The complete version of the visual tool: you can utilize the
complete version of the visual tool you just experienced.

It would provide you with actual helps to make a better and informed
decision, and you could have observe the evolution of the website
nurtured by your feedback and input.

Please also feel free to forward this message to someone who may be
interested in this study as well.

If you have any other questions, please email me.

Thank you very much once again for your time and consideration!!!

Best regards,

Ji Soo Yi

Here's the article:
http://chronicle.com/free/v54/i34/34b01701.htm

And here are the responses:

http://www.npr.org/blogs/talk/2008/05/dont_go_to_college.html

My response was at this point (more than 1/2 down):

1:43 AM ET | 05-13-2008

Aside from how much money you want to make and class snobbery, I think
one problem is, we Americans focus so much on the bottom line that
it's become OK to forget everything we learn each year so long as we
get A's. I.e., we should be telling kids "no, you may not keep video
games/TV/computers in your bedroom, because learning to love reading
for hours at a time is more important than anything else. Even if you
don't plan to go to college."

Example: In a Feb. 2005 TIME cover article, it said:

Kohn knows a college counselor hired by parents to help "package"
their child, who had perfect board scores and a wonderful grade-point
average. When it was time to work on the college essay, the counselor
said, "Let's start with a book you read outside of school that really
made a difference in your life." There was a moment of silence. Then
the child responded, "Why would I read a book if I didn't have to?"

(Not to mention that zero love of reading often means zero interest in
serious news stories - or the general world. That's hardly good for
this country's future.)

(End of response.)

Lenona.

I don't see how a college degree a waste of money. Two of my schoolmates are
chief engineers, another one owns a company with over 100 engineers and
support staff and just bought a mid rise building in San Francisco near
downtown. Two are lawyers, one owns a law firm, two medical doctors, three
are MBAs, two has their own architecture company, one was the top
entrepreneur in Hawaii, and so on. None collecting welfare or employment,
how can that be a waste of money?

You still could get a great college education in America with little money.
Much has to do with the person, not the schools. Two of smartest guys I know
came from really "shitty" junior high and high schools.

We still rent two boxes for our two cable-ready TV's because we get premium
channels and occasionally watch pay-per-view. However, I don't rent a cable
modem (I own one that is DOCSIS compliant), and I'm eventually going to get
a couple universal remotes and give the other ones back to the cable company
and stop paying monthly for them.

My comments on the handyman article should you attempt this repair
yourselves.
http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/plumbing/bathtub/faucet1/deltarot/replseal.html
http://tinyurl.com/4y3bwl

They were omnipotent when they said "we had to study the situation for
a few minutes before we realized that the brass collar was actually a
separate part from the rest of the brass valve housing" and "Once the
retaining collar was removed, the rest was obvious." The same ideas
were expressed in this thread.

But the actual steps they took in that handyman article were wrong not
only because they used pliars instead of a strap wrench but because
they took apart parts that even they didn't use so they never needed
to take apart those part in the first place. There was no need to pry
off the o ring on the tip of the valve and to pry off the brass
temperature limit valve either. They were just blindly taking things
apart because they could not because they should.

Otherwise it was a good article and the pictures are excellent.
Combined with this thread I would think someone could now do the job
in about ten minutes.
They even explained why there is a screw hole which isn't used in a
handle shower faucet but which is used in a knob shower faucet.

Further along these same lines....

"Crude oil gets all the headlines, but there's another fossil fuel
that's had an even more impressive run this year."

"Natural gas has surged 55 per cent in 2008, topping the 29-per-cent
rise in crude. And it could go higher still, especially if the summer
brings scorching temperatures that prompt homeowners to crank up their
air conditioners or hurricanes that knock out gas platforms in the
Gulf of Mexico."

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080514.wheinzl0515/BNStory/SpecialEvents2

With respect to gasoline, the U.S. national average for unleaded now
stands at $3.776, which puts it less than 23 cents away from the $4.00
mark (parts of NY, CA, CT and HI are already there, with MI and OH not
far behind).

Paul

Shop-Rite (in NJ) is offering to give you a $330 gift card for each $300
of your rebate check you apply (and cash for the remainder). So if you
get a $1200 check, you can get (for example) $660 in gift cards and $600
in cash.

I would not be surprised to see other stores doing the same, but with
grocery stores, you *know* you'll have no problem spending the gift cards!

As discussed several times already, this is not a frugal idea. You'll end
up spending more money in two ways:

1st, you will likely buy more (high-profit) items at the store where you
bought the gift card, simply because items that are a lower price at another
store are now LESS convenient to buy at the other store (easier just to put
everything on the card).

Also, you will have a tendency to spend more money, as you are not spending
MONEY, but rather charging purchases against the gift card, so you are less
aware of how much you are spending.

Shop-rite and all the other supermarkets offering this deal are not stupid.
The consumer is NOT going to benefit from this deal, the supermarket will,
even after the 10% incentive that they pitch in. -Dave

Well, in my case, I'm doing almost all my grocery shopping at Shop-Rite
because it is the cheapest of the supermarkets around here. (If it were
a clothing or electronics store, I would agree with you.)

This may be true of some people, but I still have the mindset that money
is money, no matter what the form. (It takes us forever to spend gift
cards for stores we don't use regularly, because we're trying to
maximize our return!)

Well, I will. YMMV.

Trust me, I'll spend exactly the same amount I would have otherwise, except
I'll be getting $30 worth of loss leaders on each gift card I buy. Don't
project your own buying patterns on everyone else.

It is now clear that Clinton and Obama need each other to immunize
against racist attacks, and Obama is not leadership material, yet.

Obama ran scared. Instead of campaigning aggressively in Virginia, he
went to Michigan, where the votes were not even counted. What's the
message? This is not presidential conduct. If he gets to the White
House, he can hide behind Hillary Clinton's skirt.

Democrats are beginning to figure it out. If chicken feed defeats
Hillary, McCain's swift boat operatives will destroy Obama the way
they destroyed Kerry/Edwards.

Let's cut to the chase, America is still too racist to elect a
cowardly, Black President. Read this by Bill Moyers, to clearly
understand the simple fact that Obama's only path to the White House
is through an alliance with Hillary Clinton.

Charter Is Latest ISP To Plan Wiretapping Via DPI

Privacy The Internet
Charter Communications has begun sending letters to its customers
informing them that, in the name of an "enhanced user experience," it
will begin spying on their traffic and inserting targeted ads. This
sounds almost indistinguishable from what Phorm proposed doing in the
UK. Lauren Weinstein issues a call to arms.

They aren't approaching this the right way. They need to pretend that
their customers are getting something in exchange for the invasion of
their privacy. Something like the supermarkets do.

The ISP could easily do something similar to the "loyalty" ID cards.
They could triple the price of the service and then put a link on their
home page telling you how you could get service at the normal price by
joining their privacy invasion club. They could alternate popups with
periodic encouragement telling you how much you are saving by being a
member of the "club".

That seems to be the fear. Like most fear, it inhibits rational behavior
(makes official kidnapping and torture seem acceptable, for instance).
In fact, government at any level has *always* had access to individual
accounts in exactly the same manner as long as they have all the
paperwork in order. Doesn't matter whether or not the account owner uses
direct deposit or not.

The difference is, with direct deposit, you are giving the government
permission, in advance, to take your funds away from you. For any reason,
without asking you first. -Dave

I worked with a person who had tax issues. He had no direct deposit
but one day he found his bank account had been frozen and a lien placed
on his pay check.
I found it amusing because at the time we were being wrongly
classified as independent contractors and he laughed at those of us who
paid taxes.

What do you call pathetic? They have everything you will find in the new
release section of any B&M video rental shop. Plus some. In other words,
they have all the movies that most people are interested in renting. -Dave

Good example of the frugality principle of not buying more than you actually
need. DH and I use our Netflix subscription for other types of rentals than
new movie releases. But if what you rent's limited to that kind of thing,
then Netflix may not be the best alternative.

Well, I rarely rent from the new (studio film) release section,
preferring instead independent and foreign films, so when I look at the
box, I find nothing I'm interested in.

Obviously, YMMV.

We prefer to see the foreign/indie films at the local artsy place which
offers $3 saturday matinees. There are only about 8-10 films a year that
fall into that category. For the standard Hollyweird fare we spend $1 at
Redbox. 1/4 the price of On Demand.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but Donna's virtue is the
fount of information she is leaving on the Internet for future
homeowners' reference, unlike, for example, HoundMan (VF) on
alt.autos.subaru who persists in modifying his 2007 Subaru to feel and
perform like his 1968 Chevy and provides excruciatingly detailed posts
addressing his goals, his actions, and his opinions, few if any of
which correlate to the reality the rest of us live in. Try reading
some of his posts for maximum annoyance.

Oh my! I certainly did not mean to annoy the very people who help me!
Nor did I mean to annoy anyone who needs the help in the future.
I'm very sorry for the "excrutiating" detail - I never intended to offend.
I'll therefore keep this apology short and leave quickly.

My son often throws away shoes that have not had so much wear and the
laces are still fine. I want to re-use the laces, but they are
invariably white which does not go well with my leather shoes.

Is there a frugal home made dye, black or any dark colour that I could
easily make at home please? Thanks.

Kroger in my area is offering up to four cards per family (in $300 or
multiples thereof) with an extra 10% added. Since I shop at Kroger anyway
(mostly buying weekly loss leaders), I'm planning on buying the maximum
amount in cards between now and July. I suspect they easily make up the 10%
by either investing the up-front money, or through increased sales from
people spending more than they would otherwise (since they have a card in
their hands), or via balances that permanently go unredeemed.

I don't know of anyplace else I can get that kind of return on a small,
short-term cash investment, so it works for me. Also, by charging the store
cards to a rebate Mastercard, I get an additional 3% back. I could get that
regardless, but it still sweetens the deal a bit.

Bingo! Most people shop at 2 or 3 different grocery stores, because of
selection and price on products varying greatly. It's unusual to see one
store have the best deal on most of the items you buy. So the Kroger
promotion is looking to make money for Kroger 2 ways:

1) People will be more likely to buy ALL their grocery items at Kroger, as
the money is already spent anyway. Thus, many more of the items that are
high-profit at Kroger will end up in the cart, when these card purchasers
are shopping at Kroger.
2) People will likely spend MORE money, as they aren't paying "cash" for
their purchases. This is a well-known phenomenon, and the reason that
casinos use chips instead of cash. (so you gamble more, because after all
it's not a hundred DOLLARS, it's just a stupid little plastic chip...)

My bet, Kroger makes back a lot more than the 10% they are chipping in as an
incentive. -Dave

Shaw's is doing that in New England - extra 10% on gift cards up to $1200.

Looking at amex.com, it appears that not many people are. Of course,
FROs have just started trading this month, so the situation may
change. With so few trades, it's hard to determine if this will be a
good investment option.

True. But then again, with what we used to pay, we should've each had our
own personal repairman on standby.

Agreed. At one time you had to rent everything from the phone
company. They also charged monthly fees for things like an extension
phone on the same line. Now that I think of it the cable people used to
charge for a second tv getting basic cable. When they were forced to
stop the practice they warned people about imaginary hazards of hooking
up a second tv on your own (they are allowed to charge for doing the
cabling).

And for rental of extra converter boxes and remotes (I think our extra box is
$5/month and the extra remote is $2).

Yeah, I remember as a kid we had one phone that rang and two extensions
that didn't (that we weren't paying for.) My Dad worked for the local gas
company and he and his co-workers would pinch any phones left behind when
they were sent to shut off the gas at abandoned apartments (if they beat
the phone company guys there, of course.) Then they'd disconnect the
ringers so the phone company wouldn't detect the extra load from the
extension phones.

I remember having a heck of a time convincing my folks when I was a
teenager in the 80's that you were allowed to own phones and it was okay to
let me reconnect the ringers! (And an ever bigger sell-job to get them to
turn in the stupid banana-yellow wallphone they'd been renting since the
Nixon administration!)

> Now that I think of it the cable people used to charge for a second

My cable co was even worse. In addition to the $6/month extra outlet, we
signed up for "cable radio" for $2/month extra when the cable company first
came to town back when I was 12 or 13 years old. (They rebroadcast local
FM stations, as well as MTV's and HBO's audio in stereo, on unused radio
frequencies for people in bad reception areas.) The installer put a $2
cable splitter on the line and was about to run a wire to the stereo's FM
antenna terminals. I told my parents to tell the installer they changed
their minds and didn't want the radio service, and we ran to Radio Shack
later and bought the necessary parts to "roll our own." (We did get a
knock on the door several months later when they detected a "leak" caused
by my jury-rigged extra-outlet cable run to my brother's bedroom. As a
precocious teen, no one had told me I wasn't supposed to use a leftover
piece of 300-Ohm antenna twin-lead wire with coax adapters on the ends as a
cable line! ;-)

> When they were forced to stop the practice they warned people about

And for box rental, of course- back in the good old days, cable-ready TVs
were still a rarity. I remember trolling garage sales and flea markets
for old converters because my folks didn't want to rent any additional
boxes at $6/month. For a buck each out of a flea market junk box I scored
an old cable-to-UHF converter (upconverted the cable band to UHF channels)
and a very old 36-channel converter with a "remote"- a 12-button panel
(with a three-position switch to select which group of 12 channels you
wanted to select from) on a 20' cord that connected to the actual converter
hooked to the TV!

Ah, the good old days... ;-)

Hi,

I live in the Denver area and the local grocery store is named King
Soopers. I've heard rumblings of a promotion in which you buy a $300
gift card and they'll give you $25 free of groceries. Is there a
catch here? I'm not really looking to spend $300 at any particular
store (e.g. Home Depot, Applebees), but I guess I can pick one. Also
does the gift card cost additional money to buy and lose value as the
months dwindle by?

Any experience anyone's had with this promotion is greatly
appreciated, - Dave

I don't suppose you called them and asked for specifics? Many, many
stores are encouraging you to commit to shopping (spending!) there. They
all seem to be offering the same enough deal. It has been in the news
lately. Not something I'm doing, I have to admit.

Well, Bob, if you really want to dialogue with me, you'll have to stop
posting from google, because I killfile them. But I became aware of your
post through Vic's response.

If you'll read my post carefully, I never said the instructions were
readily available on the internet. I never said the post was off topic.
What I said was, Donna annoys the crap out of me. And she does.

It is now clear that Clinton and Obama need each other to immunize
against racist attacks, and Obama is not leadership material, yet.

Obama ran scared. Instead of campaigning aggressively in Virginia, he
went to Michigan, where the votes were not even counted. What's the
message? This is not presidential conduct. If he gets to the White
House, he can hide behind Hillary Clinton's skirt.

Democrats are beginning to figure it out. If chicken feed defeats
Hillary, McCain's swift boat operatives will destroy Obama the way
they destroyed Kerry/Edwards.

Let's cut to the chase, America is still too racist to elect a
cowardly, Black President. Read this by Bill Moyers, to clearly
understand the simple fact that Obama's only path to the White House
is through an alliance with Hillary Clinton.
