Two gender job eh? So you are saying same sex couples can be the two
parents if one is masculine and the other is feminine. That lib talk

Well, you're preaching to the choir on that one- a significant
percentage of the people shacking up/marrying and having kids are not
competent to perform any of those duties. Except for the small matter of
there not being anyone competent to sit in judgment about people's skill
sets, I'd say that having kids should require a training course and
getting a license.

But reproduction, like love and lust, is by definition an irrational
process. The genes want what the genes want. And once the kids are
there, you don't get a do-over. You have to make do as best you can.

But I still say a single parent household is better than a broken
2-parent household. BTDT, from the kid side. Once they only saw each
other a few hours a month, they got along a lot better. And both of them
were able to devote quality time to us young ones. The older kids,
separated from us younger ones by several years, said it was traumatic
as hell to be going through adolescence in a battle zone.

As long as both parents get time with the kids, and avoid stabbing each
other in the back, then, yeah, I agree. If babydaddy (or momma) disappears
or is cut out tho I'd seriously wonder about it.
Regardless tho we can agree that it sucks either way and some kids would be
better off being raised by wolves ($1 to Adam Carolla).

If you're concerned about the population, why not start by kicking out
20,000,000 illegal immigrants?

Regrettably, neither it or the DTT901 (adds analog pass-through) are
available at any Circuit City stores within 80 miles of me.

Target has a GE box which is getting negative reviews (on their own
web site!) and a Venturer box which is cheaper and reportedly better.

Also came across a web site I hadn't seen that has an extensive list of
coupon-eligible boxes, plus a few non-eligible ones.

Speaking of which, anyone have any experience with any of these?

Yes the DTT900 does not have analog passthrough but from what I've read on the
Comparison of CECB units page on Wikipedia, the DTT901 does passthrough. Could
you be mistaken?

Kinda amusing since the DTVPal was so highly anticipated it developed a
cult-like following, but the Zenith was among the first offered. From
what I understand, the Insignia sold at Best Buy is essentially the same
as the Zenith.

I recently read a tip about using a car windshield shade, with the
reflective silver or whatever you call it, for home windows. I tried it
and it worked wonderfully, but I had no way to attach the shade in
place except adhesive tape on the window or with clothespins attached to
the drapes. I want to get the same reflective material and make a
removable shade with either suction cups or velcro or whatever to put
over a picture window and sliding glass doors. A Google search found
motor home solar shades that attach with suction cups, but I really
would like just want the material so I can cut it to the exact needed
size. Suggestions?

We did look at roll-up window shades. The problem is that they would
interefere with the current window dressings (vertical blinds and drapes).

Solar blankets that are sold at WalMart can be cut and sewn (if desired,
they are fine w/ just the cut edge too). They are around $3.00 per huge
blanket.

You can come close with the reflective blankets used by campers, such
as this:

http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___81284

They come with other colors on the reverse side; I have one in green,
and I think I've seen red as well. They should hang fine with Velcro.

The big-box home centers will have a thin reflective barrier material,
but it's not designed for frequent handling. The camping blankets will
hold up very well.

Not exactly the same, but you could take a sheet of corrugated
cardboard, use spray cement to attach aluminum foil on one side, and
then more spray cement to attach fabric or wallpaper to the opposite
side. Cut to fit with an x-acto, including some wedge tabs to hold it
in place. It'll warp some, which is why you want to adhere something
to both sides. Cardboard is a little safer than using something like
expanded foam.

Well, I never thought of looking in camping equipment, but this just
might do. Thanks a lot.

Oh, I like that idea. Very frugal! Thank you very much.

The double-duty ones look good, but I wonder if they will fit between
our existing curtains and vertical blinds. Will investigate further.
Thank you.

You might also look at sheets of polyisocyanurate. It has a reflective
side and it is insulation. You could leave it in for winter. It's pretty
cheap... and tolerates hight temps. 1/2" sheets are rated at R3 and are
well under $10 for a 4 x 8.

$151.04 (down from $254.83 last year) and for 851 KWh (down from 1443
last year and 1232 the previous year!).

Some may be due to differences to outdoor temperature, but we also
raised the temperature on the A/C to 79 and swapped out most of our
bulbs to CFLs. We also power off the monitor and printer when the PC is
not in use for a while, have powered off our second PC altogether, and
switched the dehumidifier to a 3 hours on/3 hours off cycle.

You may be right, but I read this differently than you do. I can't say
that I've seen a house of that era that had vertical plank walls that
was completely solid. Building styles vary depending on access to
materials but I would be surprised if her walls were solid.
