Definitely a stupid article. For upholstered furniture you look at the
home it came from. For electronics, you assume it's bad (unless you
actually see it working) and offer an amount you're willing to throw
away if it doesn't work.

Baby gear isn't that hard to evaluate. If the $2 car seat is a recall
EXERCISE THE RECALL AND GET A BRAND NEW CAR SEAT. Use your own judgment
about helmets, but I fail to see how styrofoam with no visible defects
can NOT protect you. Remember, bicycle helmets are designed to protect
the head only from a simple drop from 6 feet PROVIDING it's being worn
properly. Most kids don't wear them properly, and neither do a lot of
adults.

Food: Again, look at the home it's coming from. Best food I ever
bought: genuine home-made Santa Rosa plum jam at an estate sale -- the
stupid heirs didn't know what they had.

I've ALWAYS bought cars from strangers, except the most recent one.
Only one was a dud, and I still got a lot of use out of it. If you
can't recognize a dangerous toy you should have your childbearing
license revoked. If you don't know enough about bicycles to know what
you're buying, go to Costco; the bike will probably need to be
adjusted, so buy a bike-repair book and learn something useful.. OTOH,
I've bought lots of good bicycles for $25 or under.

Most advice like this is aimed at dunces, so it's not entirely worthless.
