My experience is somewhat different - I bought a foot pump for my bicycle
some 25 years ago. I no longer have the bike, but I still use it to fill
tires on the car. The indicator showing the tire pressure doesn't work - it
reads some 10 psi too high, so I use a tire pressure gauge, but the pump
still works just fine.

I'm with Don on the foot pumps. I've never had a good one. A good
bicycle pump or an electric is better. At home I have air anyways...

My bad experiences with foot pumps are all around or after 1980, so
maybe you got one made before then and made better.

Now for gages on bike pumps: Don't trust them for motor vehicles. Even
on a floor pump that I like, the gage reads 20 PSI when a good gage for
car tires reads 25.
5 PSI off is less critical for bicycles, where recommended tire pressure
is generally 40-plus PSI, in some cases over 100. Bike tire blowouts also
tend to be generally less catastrophic than motor vehicle tire blowouts.

As annoying as those pitches are, sometimes they are so absurd as to be
funny. I once had a clerk offer me a three-year warranty on a $20 box
fan. I looked the clerk right in the eye and said 'you have got to be
kidding?'.

Most places, the rule seems to be 'ask three times'. I usually head it
off at the first asking by saying 'No, No, and No, and there is the
three times your boss requires.' If they EVER diddled me on the
paperwork and tried to charge for it anyway, I would throw a tantrum and
insist on the manager, plus follow it up with a letter to corporate. But
I'm not gonna beat up on some cashier droid over just getting pitched.

Close to a moot point anyway. I can almost always get a better price
elsewhere, than at the places that do the high-pressure pitch.

aem sends...

Actually, the "three no's policy" was a Circuit Shitty innovation, and
they claim it's no longer their policy. I haven't noticed anyone else
using it (and, if I did, I would probably stop shopping there).

Heh heh - good one. :)

Actually, a pushy droid trying repeatedly to sell me an extended
warranty despite my repeated refusals was the final straw that
convinced me to stop shopping at Best Buy.

For those who think that getting rid of rebates gets you the
same prices as you used to be able to get without them, I give
you an example of the Symantec 3-pack of software that Best Buy
sold for $30 on Black Friday. It used to be $100 but free after
rebate during the comparable time period when they were still
offering rebates. Is paying $30 (and tax on $30) better than
having to pay tax on $100 and deal with $100 in rebates better?
I guess it's up to the consumer to decide. If you are the sort
who forgets to file rebates or is careless or does not follow up
on rebates, then the $30 is a much better deal.

I suggest he contact Mr. Howgul Bul Arhu, the accountant with the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation or one of his associates, who are often in dire need of transferring
large sums of money from over-invoiced contracts.

I have great sympathy for your plight. But, since I have no
money either, perhaps you should ask one of these people:

http://www.MinistryOfPrivacy.com/nigerian-419/

They are all just as sincere as you, except that they are
actually offering large sums of money. And they are right there
in Nigeria, like you. They may even be sitting in the same
net.cafe, or hanging out with the other "yahoo-boys." So I bet
you could work out a good deal.

Hope this helps...

Get two landlines. Use one as the listed number for your business in
the yellow pages (the phone company insists you pay the business rate
when you are in the yellow pages and in most even local calls have a
charge from business phones/). Only use this line for incoming calls.
Have the second line as your home phone and use this for all outgoing calls.

Subscribe to service that lets you send and receive faxes via email
saving the cost of a third line.

Unless your home office occupies substantial space in your house and
is used for business only do not bother trying the home office
deduction, it sends an alert to the IRS.

Remember, you can deduct things without documentation if it is
impossible to get a receipt. Parking lot that gives no receipts can be
reported even if you parked on the street and fed 50 cents in a meter.

Have two business appointments in the same area that is a 100 mile
round trip. Mark it as two trips in your log. If and when the IRS
audits you it will be at least a year down the road, most likely longer.
Tell them one appointment had to be rescheduled due to a conflict at one
of the companies.

Do not claim some deductions. If you are audited it is a two way
street and you can decide you now want those deductions. Go to Vegas for
a trade show, do not deduct it but hold it as a weapon.

TOPIC: What Would Jesus Buy?

==============================================================================

Personally, I already figure that a (hypothetical) returned Jesus
would look around, with great disappointment about the way his
(estimated) birthday is observed.

Especially considering that his execution was partly about
punishment for that incident at the temple, where he was...

...(drum roll, please)...

...protesting against the use of a religious holiday to fleece
the public for money.

So, anyway, it looks like this film is appearing around the
US...

http://www.wwjbmovie.com/about.html

-------------------------
What Would Jesus Buy? follows Reverend Billy and the Church of
Stop Shopping Gospel Choir as they go on a cross-country mission
to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse: the end of mankind from
consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt!

From producer Morgan Spurlock (SUPER SIZE ME) and director Rob
VanAlkemade comes a serious docu-comedy about the
commercialization of Christmas. Bill Talen (aka Reverend Billy)
was a lost idealist who hitchhiked to New York City only to find
that Times Square was becoming a mall. Spurred on by the loss of
his neighborhood and inspired by the sidewalk preachers around
him, Bill bought a collar to match his white caterer's jacket,
bleached his hair and became the Reverend Billy of the Church of
Stop Shopping. Since 1999, Reverend Billy has gone from being a
lone preacher with a portable pulpit preaching on subways, to the
leader of a congregation and a movement whose numbers are well
into the thousands.

Through retail interventions, corporate exorcisms, and some good
old-fashioned preaching, Reverend Billy reminds us that we have
lost the true meaning of Christmas. What Would Jesus Buy? is a
journey into the heart of America - from exorcising the demons at
the Wal-Mart headquarters to taking over the center stage at the
Mall of America and then ultimately heading to the Promised Land
... Disneyland.

Will we be led like Sheeple to the Christmas slaughter, or will
we find a new way to give a gift this Christmas? What Would
Jesus Buy? may just be the divine intervention we've all been
searching for.

The Shopocalypse is upon us ... Who will be $aved?
