If the other party isn't interested in bipartisanship, then the only
way to get bipartisanship is to surrender. Have you considered

My current HP 1610 is turning out to be a piece of junk. It's only two
years old. About two months ago started have jammed carriage problems -
can't seem to find the paper. I've tried several brands of paper, so
it must be the printer. After about 2-5 hits on the reset. it finally
finds the paper. It's especially a problem at the start of each day.
My previous HP 872 lasted about 8 years of fairly heavy usage - I
finally had to toss it when the ink cartridges starting leaking out the
bottom of the printer. I was considering a Kodak model, but with
Donald Trump as their spokes person, there is no way.

May try a Cannon next.

You also might try a printer designed for a small office instead of a "home"
model. My HP K550 cost a bit more than other options, but has been a solid
performer and relatively frugal on ink.

I have used Breathe Right nasal strips with success, but they are
quite expensive. For awhile I was able to purchase less expensive
strips on eBay, but that source dried out. Eventually I decided to
try to make my own. I have been happy with the results.

Commercial nasal strips have an advantage over home made ones because
there is adhesive on the spring portion of the strip as well as on the
wings. The nasal strips that I make use a plastic spring and two
pieces of tape. There is no adhesive under the plastic spring. The
tape I use is the brand name Nexcare Durable Cloth in the 3/4" width.
This is made by 3M and goes by the hospital name of Durapore Surgical
Tape. It is described with the phrase "heavy-duty strong adhesive".
This is pretty effective stuff.

A number of sources could be used for the plastic spring. I have
found that the plastic designated PETE (recycling number 1) is
effective. I start out with a flat sheet that is the cover of a
container of salad greens. This is about 0.012 inches thick. I start
out with a rectangular piece of this material that is about 2 inches
long and 5/8 of an inch wide. I leave the center 3/8 of an inch or so
at the full width and taper the ends from both sides so that they come
to a blunt point that is about the thickness of a match (about 3/32")
across. This homemade spring is much more powerful than that used in
commercial nasal strips. Therefore it has to be bent so that it is
just a little more open than the contour of your nose. You just want
to be able to open the nasal passages enough to breathe easily. You
could probably get by with a narrow strip of this material that
wouldn't need to be bent. A narrow strip, however, will be inclined
to leave a depression on your nose as the commercial strips do.

Bend the strip around something like a small cylindrical pencil. It
is hard to do this perfectly but the bend doesn't really have to be
perfect.

I cut two pieces of tape about 0.8 inches long. I attach these across
the ends of the spring, overlapping the ends by about 3/32". I cut a
piece of paper towel to pad the center of the strip. The paper towel
should be just long enough to be held in place by the inner portions
of the two pieces of tape.

Applying the nasal strip your nose is about the same as it would be
with the commercial products. By the way, I have found that if I wash
my nose thoroughly with Dove soap the adhesive tape sticks adequately
but pimples are avoided.

Another approach that could be used by the frugal person would be to
reuse commercial strips by removing the flaps and applying the Nexcare
tape to the ends. Unfortunately, you will still run into the problem
that the adhesive under the spring will have lost its power.
Unfortunately, the tape will may a little residue on your nose that
will need to be removed after using the strip.

I just noticed that someone is selling, on eBay, instructions on
making your own nasal strips I do not know how his or her method
compares with mine.

Even if you don't want to make your own nasal strips, it is pretty
useful to have some of this Nexcare tape around to use for general
first aid purposes and to make do with a used commercial nasal strip
if you happen to run out.

I did, I did! I called Amana many times - they are the ones who referred me
to the repairman who showed up at my house. What else would you recommend
other than an Amana-recommended repairman. I don't get it.

Here's what I did ..

First I called the Amana number in the maintenance manual (pretty crappy
manual, I might add) at 800-843-0304. They were closed so a day later I
called again but they referred me to 888-842-2440, which turned out not to
handle furnaces (the Amana personnel didn't know the difference between a
furnace and an air conditioner).

Finally, they referred me to 877-337-3636 which did handle Amana forced-air
furnaces.

That third number provided me, based on my zip code, three possible
repairpeople. I called the first one they gave me and he's the one who came
by.

Are you saying we should not go to the ones Amana recommends?

This is shocking news really, shocking that a human would lack the
sense to stay away from such sites. You probably would also be shocked
to find out the shoes are not NIke anyway. They are probably nike
with a small n, shoes they manufacturer to look like the real thing.
Nike just can't be shipping from thousands of plants there and more
thousands of distributors. The fake shoes are confiscated at the
border if caught, but many filter through. I don't know the mechanics
of your trading, but perhaps that's what happened to the second
shipment. Now they don't want to correspond with anybody in America as
that might help uncover more of the operation. Youbenpwned.

It's a pity. Big-name American brands do little but import cheap stuff
from China and mark it up vastly. Our wages are depressed by foreign
competition, yet we can't enjoy the savings of direct importation. I
would like to be able to buy shoes from the same assembly line that
makes shoes for Nike but without the swoosh, at a big savings.

I quilt, dye fabrics and work with a lot of different textiles.
There really isn't any reason for dry cleaning your wools unless you've
got something very fragile or of antique value. Any mild detergent of
neutral ph in cold water wash _and_ cold rinse by hand and blocking it to
dry is an effective and less expensive way to care for your wool shirt
other than dry cleaning.

What makes wool "shrink" is twofold: water and heat.

When I wish to make felt from wool I wash the item in hot water
and a cold rinse. That gives me felt. If I want a tighter piece of
felt I'll throw it in the dyer to finish it off.

probably.

I agree with you entirely EXCEPT one thing... the Sammie's are only $2.
That's your hint that you're supposed to buy a few of them.

As for healthy/low fat I do agree... you can't sell the same old stuff
in tiny portions and call it low fat. What I like to do is go by the %
of RDA, I try to eat foods with a higher % of RDA for protein than fat
and carbs. That way I'll hopefully be eating something that will stick
to my ribs for a while, thus reducing the calorie count overall.

Okay, here's the nutrition information from Quiznos' web site for the
"balsamic chicken flatbread sammie" (not including the dressing):

Calories: 170
Fat Calories: 30
Fat (g): 3.5
Saturated Fat (g): 0.5
Trans Fat (g): 0
Cholesterol (mg): 15
Sodium (mg): 410
Carbohydrates (g): 24
Fiber (g): 1
Sugar (g): 1
Protein (g): 11

We can pretty much assume that most of the protein is coming from the
chicken. For cooked white chicken meat, that works out to 38 grams of
chicken, or about 4 1/3 tablespoons.

So, the chicken contributes ~72 calories.

A slice of commercial white bread is about 70 calories. I expect that
the sammie bread is higher, because it appears denser. Maybe 90
calories?

So, that leaves 10 calories to dole out among the lettuce and tomatoes.

They're not lying about what they're selling, they're showing you a
photograph of a sandwich created from the actual ingredients by a food
stylist. So, the amount of chicken shown very likely was the same AMOUNT
by weight that you got, but trimmed, adjusted, stacked, and posed to
appear like more.

Big Macs don't look look their pictures, either, and I've never had a TV
dinner that more than vaguely resembled the one on the outside of the
box.

If you're really a consumer advocate, you're either new at this or very
naive.

Let's compare with some of the lowest calorie offerings from McDonald's:

Hamburger:
100 grams, 250 calories

Grilled [chicken] Snack Wrap® with Honey Mustard:
124 grams, 260 calories

Caesar Salad (without chicken):
213 grams, 90 calories

Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken:
311 grams, 220 calories
(so 98 grams of chicken adds 130 calories)

The real problem is that American "super-sized" portions have completely
distorted our view of what a "serving" of anything should be.

Since we can buy a half gallon of soda that contains no measureable
calories, some people seem to be under the impression that we should be
able to do the same with a pound of corn-fed meat.

On the Quiznos web site, the banner headline over the sammies photograph
is: "Big Bold Taste. Smaller Size". Sounds like they're being
ridiculously honest there.

Good points.

And this is the very reason why I said that some of the amounts
reported were too low.

From a survival standpoint, if you can't cover these costs you are
sunk.
