invoice" is a fiction designed to assist in this deception.

I don't know about vehicle sales, but I know with many retail businesses,
they will double the price of what they paid for an item typically. So if
they paid $10 for something, it will sell for $20.
And they need to do this to pay their bills. Renting a building, paying
employees, paying the electric bill, insurance, etc. and make a profit. If
they can't cover their costs and make a profit, they will not be in business
very long!

A car generally is a big purchase, but other ongoing expenses add up as
well. I wonder if the original poster investigates the "dealer" cost for
groceries, or electricity, or housing before eating, turning on the lights,
or settling on a place to live?

Not with high value items like cars they dont.
I did once overhear the salesman ask his manager
what price he could offer me on a large top loading
washing machine when he said what their purchase
price was, I was shocked at how low the margin
was, single digit percentage of the retail price.

Companies who put profit over safety endager everyone!
So assume BP goes bankrupt their substantial assets would be sold off,
paying all claims for damages.
the stock holders would loose big time, such is one of the risks of
stocks.
the name BP would disappear, current BP management would be out of
work.
the franchise BP stations would be sold and rebranded into other
names, the assets would continue in operation by other hopefully safer
companies.
the death of BP is critical to everyones safety!
other companies will take notice and decide safety must be above
profit.
if this fails to occur the next disaster might be a nuke power company
who puts profit over safety, and turns a big chunk of our country into

Good question. It's shameful we're not doing more.
One reason I suspect (which is no excuse) is in the UK we have a much
higher population density. Nobody wants to live next to a wind turbine
so very few get built.
I hope we'll soon catch up with our neighbours in Europe by using
offshore wind, tidal and wave energy.
Certainly I don't want more nuclear here either. Scotland got that one
sorted - they have decided no more nuclear - why can't we decide the same?
I generate my own elecricity on the bicycle with my dynamo - I know it's
not much but it's a start! :-)

I'm afraid the reason is you are much closer to America than to
Europe. Not geographically, of course.
I'm trying to do my share here, but hanging in the hammock is my best
safe option so far. I save about 100w compared to a TV plus I turn off
the A/C. They are getting my banana, so to speak. ;)

Mercifully domestic AC is rare here in the UK. We Brits do our bit to
hasten the end of life as we know it by using patio heaters instead though!

So it's not a place for hammocks. But you can get a thick quilted
hammock not a tropical one.
I'm kind of becoming an expert in the field of saving energy through
hammocks.

No, although it's only a matter of time until they do! :-(
I saw some bananas in a banana tree in someone's front garden in Devon a
couple of years ago. I presume someone had bought them from a shop and
hung them there for a joke - they were hanging the wrong way up.

Dear Miss Manners,
My fiancée and I have a college friend that we have kept in close
touch with. A few years back, we made a 200-mile move for a better job
in a huge city. The move has done well for us and we are looking to
buy our first house in the next year.
At the news our friend replied, "But houses there cost like XXX
dollars!!" He then asked about other personal things like how much we
made and if we were in any debt. I bluntly changed the question and
the conversation quickly went sour. The situation was further strained
by the fact that he is currently out of work. I felt rude not
answering the question, but I felt the question in itself was rude and
made for an awkward situation.
My question is, is it wrong to ask financial questions of friends, or
was it I that committed the no-no by brushing him off and possibly
damaging the friendship?

Both. Nosy questions are rude and need not be answered, but giving
blundering friends the brush-off is not quite nice, either.
Especially in light of your friend's misfortune, Miss Manners would
have preferred something gentler, such as "Well, we really don't
discuss our finances, but let me just say that we feel very fortunate
to be able to do this. And we hope you will visit us there often."
