Our children are submitted to a triple attack:

1- Junk food, TV advertising in Scandinavian countries is banned for
children under 12 and limited in the UK (second fattest nation),

2- Consumption (toys, etc) ditto,

3- No physical activity, I've seen only one community where the
children timidly ride bikes on sidewalks (a Jewish town). You may
consider them "crazy" or brave to do so and rebel.

In other words, WE ARE BREEDING COUCH POTATOES AND CONSUMERS.

My girlfriend's son (Jehova's Witness, waiting for Jesus) is 30
something, obese and diabetic. They don't have much of a chance in the
fast food, couch potato culture.

You are half right. The problem is the status quo doesn't allow to go
that "extra mile" without a car:

'Most U.S. roads lack safe travel lanes for cyclists and few offices
provide secure places for employees to lock up their bikes or showers
for employees to use once they arrive at work. Until more support
systems are in place, Gamstetter says, it will be hard to entice new
people to try casual cycling or pedaling to work.

"We're up against the S.U.V.," says Gamstetter. "Culturally, the bike
scene in the United States has a long way to go."'

So what is the solution if not the revolution?

They almost had me convinced and now they turn out to be radicals? ;)

The problem with the bike lanes is that we have many of them but they
are never connected or lead where you go, so you must survive with
traffic...

Wait, not barely survive. WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE THE LANE! Cars go
around and everybody happy.

Gordon, now that I looked at Phone Power more closely it does seem to
be the solution for me.
Questions:

1) I am using Magic Jack now for my business line. It is plugged in
via my USB port. Can I use Phone Power AND Magic Jack?

2) So I can use any standard phone - cordless or corded - for the 2
Phone Power lines?

3) Is the service reliable? I read some reviews online and there were
a few reports of unreliability; and someone said something about
having to "bridge" it to your modem? I have no idea what that means! I
do have a cell phone but I keep it in the car and it's relatively
expensive to use so if I get rid of my ATT land line I need to know
that this PhonePower will be up and running at least 95% of the time!

4) Does using the computer while someone is talking on one or both of
the lines interfere with the voice quality/ reliablilty? (I have ATT
DSL, at about 5mb ps download speed as tested at DSL Reports.)

5) So all I pay to start is $35 and then they bill me each month? Or
is it an automatic withdrawal or ?

Thanks for the info and if you want to give me info to get a referral
bonus I'll be happy to use that since you gave me the info I need to
sign up.

P.S. One more probably STUPID question:

Since Phone Power offers 2 lines, is it okay NOT to use a 2nd line? I
probably will sooner or later but right now we just have the one
cordless phone and I don't want to have to go out and buy a 2nd one at
this time.

Ooops, one more question:
I found this at amazon.com and am further confused now.
Is this a different product/service than the one I linked to above for
$79.95?
I found this which has amazon marketplace sellers selling the hardware
package for $40+5 shipping with a $79.95 credit towards 1 year of
service:
http://www.amazon.com/Phone-Power-Broadband-Telephone-Service/dp/B003B42ZBE/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

But then there is this which actually costs $79.95. Is it not the same
thing?
http://www.amazon.com/Phone-Power-Broadband-Telephone-Service/dp/B003B42ZBE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=A1U1OLQDUY3F0V&s=generic&qid=1284404704&sr=1-1

Seems to be the same thing except that the 2nd one is referred by
Phone Power's own site so they are getting the extra money, no?

I don't see why not.

Yes.

Service is always there. I have never experienced an outage.
A few times an incoming call will experience a really bad echo.
I seem to get this about once a month. Hanging up and redialing
will solve the problem.

The Phone Power ATA has two network jacks: WAN and LAN. It is
easy enough to just plug the WAN port into an available jack
on your modem. No special hookup needed. But Phone Power
recomends that the ATA sit between your modem and your network.
That is; all your internal network wireing comes off the single
LAN port of the ATA. As I said, I didn't find that necessary.

A 5Mbps line should handle voice and data just fine. FWIW VoIP
only uses about 128Kbps of bandwidth.

I don't know. I choose the "Pay for the whole year at once" billing
option. It has not been ayear yet (but it's getting close) so I
havn't received a 2nd bill.

Sure. In fact the Phone Power adaptor ships with the 2nd line
disabled. You have to go to their site to activete the 2nd
line (no charge. Unlike Vonage who charges a monthly fee to
activate the 2nd line).

Yeah,
Phone power sells their retail combo packs at many locations,
including Best Buy. But dealing with Phone Power directly at
their site is probalby the best option (why add another party
to the transaction?). You can order up service and delay the
port of your current phone number (I waited till the end of the
30 day trial). In the mean time you can make outgoing calls
over Phone Power. You just can't receive them.

It only takes a few (in my case 3) days to recieve the Phone
Power adaptor after placing your order.

One note: When you first connect the Phone Power Adapter, it
will do a software update. While this is happening the front
panel lights will blink slowly. This will take about 10
minutes to complete. Just let it do it's thing. If you
interupt the software update you my end up "Bricking" the
Adapter.

BTW: tell them that Gordon Reeder sent you.

"Car runs down bicycling demonstrators in Brazil"

I changed the title to illustrate the point that Critical Mass may be
provoking the beast by blocking the road. The article simply doesn't
say. The point is that I'm against CM strategy and for TAKING THE
LANE, not the road.

Again, the guy may have charged at them out of rage against bikes in
an act of random violence. Just today I was riding on the road and
this "mafia car" (black car, black windows) slowed down and blasted an
AIR HORN at me. DRIVERS LOOKING FOR TROUBLE ABOUND.

Here's the stunning news:

SAO PAULO – A motorist sped his car through a pack of more than 100
cycling activists in southern Brazil, sending bikes and screaming
riders flying through the air and landing hard on the asphalt in a
scene captured on amateur video and posted online.

At least 40 cyclists were injured, with most suffering cuts and broken
bones, but nobody was killed, authorities said.
